Masterminded by Rick James, the Mary Jane Girls (no doubt a nod to James' fondness of marijuana) had previously served as background singers to the R&B legend, releasing two albums between 1983-1985. When James had a falling out with Motown in the mid-80's, the plug was sadly pulled on the group, and the girls faded into relative obscurity once again as backup singers for other artists.
