Leather & Walnut Bluetooth Speaker

I've been sketching bluetooth speaker box designs for a few weeks and finally found a design that I thought would look good. I just want to start off by saying designing speaker boxes isn't as easy as one might think. There's a lot that goes in to building a speaker enclosure and it's not as easy as just putting speakers in a box. With this build being a prototype, I did not follow any guidelines and didn't use any online calculators for the specs of the speakers (frankly I couldn't find the thiel specs for the speakers I used). I did not take that in to consideration when designing this box because, frankly, it's not really for music, but for podcasts and other light listening while in the kitchen or in my shop (when I move i to the garage). The box is 13 1/2" wide, 6 1/2" tall and 8" deep.

Nice project - just a few suggestions. The box MUST be completely sealed. No air leaks what so ever to get a nice sound. That big cord hole in the back and only securing with magnets prevents that. Also most speaker box builders will go over the joints with caulk, silicone, hot glue, even more wood glue to ensure no air leaks. Second suggestion, use contact cement and a brayer to apply the leather to the box. This way it will not matter if the leather has a few wrinkles, the brayer will smooth all of that out. It will also adhere much better and no need for using calls to hold the leather in place until it dries. With contact cement, once the two pieces meet, it's stuck. As for the sound quality, try out some different speakers. (Try them out before putting them in the speaker box) Make sure the speakers are compatible with the Amp. That plays a big part in the sound quality as well. I have a few of those amps and I know exactly what you are referring to, which is why I now build my own amps. With that said, you said it was a prototype, so good luck on your next build, and again nice project.

It is a beautiful box. The real issue is the engineering design behind it. There is a whole lot more to speaker building than putting a couple of speakers in a box. I'd much rather have a crappy looking box that sounds amazing that a beautiful box that sounds like crap.

I started my comment by saying it was a nice project. I build speakers all the time so I am fully aware of of what goes into a project like this. Speaker building is not a big mystery. Once you understand the concept, you can make a speaker out of anything, so yeah it is as simple as putting speakers in a box, or whatever other object you may have, but it has to be done the right way, and there are infinite ways that can be achieved. Also in the video he said the sound quality was not so great which is why he would not recommend that board he was using, and also why I stated he needs to make sure his box is completely sealed, and to test the amp with speakers before putting them in the box. I have three of those same amps on my tinker table now collecting dust because yes they are crappy which is why I build my own boards from scratch. The minor issues he had with this build can be easily corrected which is what my aim was - just offering suggestions.

Andrew, thanks for the comment. This is the first of many speakers I plan on building, and just like anything new, you have to learn the basics. This box is mainly used for podcasts, which fits the bill. I've learned from building this box that there are things I will change in the future to make a better box, but overall, I wanted to experiment with a design because I can fix the other issues. An ugly box, I can't.
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 8 лет назад
I appreciate the feedback! I found another bluetooth board that I'm going to try (The sure boards) which will fix that issue. The box being airtight is also another issue, like you mention. The back moves too much with only being held in by magnets.
@practicalguy973
@practicalguy973 7 лет назад
I have some experience with the bluetooth feedback issues. This is a ground loop feedback that happens when the amplifier and BT module are isolated to the same power supply. The Sure board might have a design that isolates it so that's good if it works. If you want to use the typical cheap Ebay stuff just get a amp board with no bluetooth and separate bluetooth board and make sure there is a second power supply, one for the amp and one for the BT board. I was having that issue and ended up buying a USB power bank to power my BT board and that worked really well. I then redesigned my speaker so that USB power bank can charge my phone and also runs the BT module.

Amazing! Leather looks great with Walnut wood However, things that I'd do differently - cut a deeper grove for the leather so that it doesn't sit flush with the wood - use a leather strap of slightly lesser width - place the leather strap off center, so that it's closer to the rear side - include an on/off switch on the rear panel

I'd recommend sealing the box air tight, it simply gives a better sound. Also, I realize it's easier to build with professional tools, than just normal home tools. That beeing said it is an absolutely flawless build..! Great build quality and excellent craftmanship..! Btw, you can buy noise reduction filters on E-bay, that will solve the biggest part of that annoying feedback noise the amplifier has.

This is a cool design. I agree that some refinements would improve it. Definitely make version 2.0. one thought to improve this one without starting over - the only thing that really bothers me visually is the leather edges, which look rough. You could create two thin "picture frames" that wrap all the way around the speaker box, and cover the edges of the leather. If you did them in a contrasting wood, like maple, I think it would still be clean and modern, and they would also lift the box up and serve as a stand for it.
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 7 лет назад
Thanks for watching. I agree, the leather should be hidden a little more and I think the easiest solution for the next version would be to make the groove deeper so the leather sits deeper. I like your idea of contrasting woods for the picture frame approach. That too would look good.

Interesting use of mixed materials! On the 'controller' front, the speaker 'system' I've built uses a rasp pi + amp. No BT, but has wifi, uses Max2Play on the Pi for the software. Since I was too cheap to get an AIO amp+pi, it means two powerboards. This integrates well with Squeezebox server, though probably won't suit your needs so much.
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 8 лет назад
Yeah I thought about using a Pi but I just wanted something quick and easy to just broadcast from my phone. I will be making more speaker boxes in the future though and will look into this. Thanks for watching.

Nice design. Good workmanship. For stereo output you should have the left and right speaker in separate chambers, otherwise the sound will be muddled up. Also, you need an air tight chamber, otherwise the bass will be weak - that big hole on the back won't help, and neither will the magnetic back cover - unless you use bigger magnets and a rubber seal of some sort.

One day, many years from now maybe, the box will be opened and someone will exclaim, "this was built by a man with pride, for I see no squeeze out", and you shall be that man. Or you built it so well that it lasts forever, haha. Great video man, speaker looks fantastic!

looks good. In the revised edition, if you are going for good quality, use some 45 degree pieces in the corners to help bounce air and for structural support. also look at running a bead of silicon around all the joins inside to air seal it, and maybe mount the amplifier so that only the power socket is visible from the outside, rather than have a gaping hole that the power runs through to stop air escape. Nice build and I love the contrast between the colours.

Hi, very nice speaker and video +1like. I used the same module on a used Bose speaker that I had laying around connected to a lead 12v 2.2a battery and I must say that I maybe had expected more of it, but you have to be honest for only 9 € (10.03USD) delivered FREE to my doorstep from China! I wont complain. The ease to take my speaker to my work and use it when ever where ever in just 5 secs. also it is efficient. I've been using it 4 days straight without charging it and stil is going strong. Anyway If you find a better amp please share some links I want to build a bigger speaker for our backyard. Greets.

The noise you're getting is probably interference from electrical fields. Are your speaker wires shielded? That's usually the culprit.

It looks great! I really like the leather and walnut together. I kind of like how the leather has scars and wrinkles in it. Makes it seem more real. So, when you say you want to cut the groove deeper and use thinner leather, you want there to be a little reveal after you're done with the inlay? The vintage looking plate on the back was a nice touch.
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 8 лет назад
Thanks Bruce! Yeah I want a little reveal. I found the leather edge to show just a tad in areas where the edges weren't perfectly clean. With a little reveal, I think it would look good and hide it better.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 8 лет назад
Yeah, I can see that. Or at the very least, go through the burnishing steps for the leather edges like you do for other leather projects. Then, if the side showed, it wouldn't matter. Oh, and you should have stamped your Simple Cove into there. ;)

The noise you're getting is very likely ground loop noise. For some reason, the BT integrated boards are more susceptible. Try powering with batteries. If the noise goes away, then you know it's 100% related to ground loop. Then, search YT. Plenty of videos out there with ground loop iso circuits that you can add to the box.
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 7 лет назад
Thank you, I will give that a try!

I purchased the same Bluetooth board and had the same noise that sounded like feedback. I soldered a small 24 gauge wire to the Bluetooth antenna. The buzzing stopped. Test with an alligator clip. If the clip reduces the buzz, try soldering a wire

Band clamp will make it easier to square it all up. Also you can get convertible clamps that are easily reversed to form spreader clamps, would have come handy for the inside reinforcements. (aren't there some of those lying around on the work bench? ;-) Nice touch there with the shellac. If not pressed for time, I'd maybe stick with the same leather but try to wet it, bend it around the corners and let it dry to that shape before glueing it on. There are some Diresta videos with that technique,
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 8 лет назад
Thanks for watching the video and for giving me feedback, I appreciate it. I could have used my irwins but I was being lazy and super glue did a good enough job for me lol. That's an excellent idea about wet forming the leather. I will be trying that next time for sure. Thanks for the tip!

Should have been sealed and could have had poly fill to reduce standing waves. That hole in the back will make the box have a weird resonance which may create distortions. Otherwise nice design and woodworking!

Marco, I totally agree. I made plenty of mistakes but have learned along the way. I plan on making another revision with better plans. Why when wood glue works just fine? I wasn't in a hurry to glue the leather down so I opted to use what I had on hand.
@KD0FKE
@KD0FKE 8 лет назад
Because it's the proper glue to use. You don't use wood glue to bond plastic to plastic. I have over 10 years experience in upholstery. and have never considered using anything other than that for that specific application. Read the labels of the glue you are using and match the type of what you are glueing together. Sure it may last but you may have problems in the future. The leather will change it's shape due to temperature, or humidity slightly at a different rate than the wood.
