Leatherman Skeletool: Robust, Specific Usability 

I know this is an old video, kind of random search brought me here but just in case you own the regular Skeletool and prefer the CX 154CM plain edge steel blade, you can purchase it separately for about 20 bucks on eBay, they are unused, first quality, removed from new Skeletool tools, you don't need to upgrade to the Skeletool CX. Again,....just for any one who may be watching this video and still doesn't know about the CX 154CM replacement blade.

I own the standard Skelatool and it's replaced my knife/multi tool combo I carried for years. Its a fantastic setup that I never leave home

As a stagehand i highly recommend the leatherman skeletool. it has everything you need for basic stagework and nothing more. knife for cutting E-tape, screwdriver for taking apart of motor, then the pliers to pull apart wires, oh and yanking out stubborn truss pins. The carabiner is good, but it fits in the pocket with the clip so nicely that you dont need to use the carabiner. Wire cutters for zip ties. oh! and lets not forget about the bottle opener for after work! This is everything you need for stagework. its great! The ONLY gripe i have about it is that the pliers are not spring loaded, kinda annoying at times but only a very minor gripe. This thing is awesome.

I have had my skeletool for 3 years and man it’s the best. Used it more than any other tool I carry to date. It’s an amazing tool and does it all.

Awesome video, fellow Boy Scout! I was one about 35 years ago. I just bought one of these yesterday and I'm really impressed with it. That's surprising because I hate multitools! I bought it because I go on long distance mountainbike rides and you need pliers if your deraileur cables ever come loose. Thanx for all the product reviews, guy! Be safe out there!!!

Great review, just got mine today and wanted to make sure I didnt breeze over something. I'm not in need of having every tool on one unit. I have the iFixit toolkit for cell phones to most other consumer electronics. When I need that level of repair, I can do it at home. For basic needs, screwdriver, knife, pliers, (which in my opinion are like 80% of most peoples common us) the Skeletool covers them well. To boot is the fact that aesthetically, its untouchable. The height of industrial, practical design.

It was made for climbers, and I must say, I never climb without it. Even in the gym for practice. It's so light and you can clip it on straight to your harness without worrying it will fall off, that way you have one of the most important tools right at hand.

I also have to mention that the bottle opener does indeed work FANTASTIC! Also, the liner lock of this blade has one of THE BEST lock-ups of any liner lock I've come across. I also have the Leatherman Expanse e33T and love it equally as much as the Skeletool. My EDC Rotation: Skeletool CX, Leatherman Expanse e33T, Kershaw Leek G10, and Case Crimson Jigged Bone Canoe (1 of 3000 series).

Dude, nice job on reviewing something that has been looked at over & over. Your review videos always cover all the details, but also you're perspective is what sets your videos apart. Nice job Scout, you set the bar high!

I own a Skeletool, and it was my EDC for about a year. It did great for what I needed it for, but I switched over to the bigger, badder ST300 when I got a job doing more industrial work. The screwdriver on the Skeletool, for instance did fine for 'regular" stuff, but I needed the longer screwdriver found on the ST300 to get into industrial PLC racks. Great videos!

Just bought the CX version and love it. Replaced my edc knife. Buy the “bit kit” and you have 21 more bits (x 2) .

Man I hate watching these old videos and listening to how much the prices have gone up in a few years.

Great multi tool. I didn't think I would be crazy about it at first, but now it's the one I carry most often.

I had issues with this falling out of my pants pocket--the pocket clip isn't very tight at all, unless you're wearing pants made from thicker materials (like denim). It's the reason why I am no longer carrying it--it fell out, and became lost. :( Other than that, it was an AMAZING tool. I used it literally everyday for almost 9 months.

I have to have pliers on any multi tool for splinters and removing and tightening small nuts and bolts when away from home and car. Helped me and others tons of times.

Thanks for answering my questions about this thing, especially about the ergonomics and how the screwdriver works. This might have to be my next purchase.

Old video, but you mentioned it looks like you can remove the knife as if the rest is just an add on...well Leatherman has done that you can buy the Leatherman Skeletool KBX which is just the knife portion, but no bit driver...would have been nice if they would have left the bit driver.

As a constructive criticism - I don't know what you do for a living, but twisting drivers is how I make a living. Your demonstration on pluses and minuses between the juice and skeletool is fundamentally flawed. The Skele is by far the better driver. If you're having a torque issue fold the handle into an L shape while using the weak hand to stabilize and apply pressure on the spine of the tool downward toward the fastener until its loose enough to use the tool normally. Leatherman designed them that way intentionally and a longer tool allows more leverage thus the Skeletool is the better driver.

Excellent review. I will be looking up more of your vids. Based on your review, I purchased a Skeletool CX and love it. My business requires me to carry and use a knife many times a day so I have become an EDC knife collector and bit of a knife/steel snob. Because of this I opted for the CX with the CM154 steel. This is the first multi tool that has worked it's way into my EDC rotation and in fact, days that I carry a knife and leave the CX at home I feel a little naked. Great tool for light maintenance jobs when a full tool bag is not available. As for the blade, it is surprisingly good for a multi tool. I would put this blade up against my Kershaw and Spidercos and that is really saying something coming from me. Never thought I would give a multi-tool blade an endorsement that strong. I have the CX version and I LOVE it. I work in an office setting (business casual dress) and the Skeletool is the best knife/multitool I've come across for clipping inside Khaki pants' front pockets. Because Khaki's have sloping pockets, the design of the Skeletool means the CX basically disappears when clipped in the front right pocket. ALL you see is the clip its self and the top Torx screw that attaches the clip. AWESOME!!!! 154CM and a plain edge is worth the extra bucks for the CX to me.

I like this more than the juice, very EDC-able.

i have owned two skeletool Cx versions. the pliers snapped two times. first time when in wanted to break of two screws at the same time. the second skeletool when i wanted to break of an 3mm piece of metal. it a nice tool and very durable but the pliers arent made for bending things. both incidents where my fault but leatherman replaced them both times. the lightweight makes this an awesome multitool. you barely notice that it is in your pocket. awesome company, awesome service.

Nice review Scout..reminded me of when i bought my Juice S2. I really liked the Skeletool, and was sad that it had so little to offer tool-wise. If Leatherman ever jacks the Skeletoo, up just a LITTLE feature-wise..I'm all over it.

I suggest you should use the driver bits with the pliers in the driver bit handle, not in the carabiner handle. This gives you a much thicker handle to hold, and eliminates the problem you described. You can also set the handles at 90°, giving you more leverage than a dedicated driver. The missing tool, from my point of view, is a good pair os scissors. The Juice CS2 is a better all-rounder because of the extended tool set, IMHO.

Good review . The only part everyone seems to overlook ..have you ever used a speed wrench..picture one ..looks like a c ..it is designed to rotate like a speed wrench when you use screwdriver. It actually makes it easier and faster than regular conventional ones. Put the very top of the handle in your palm like a speed wrench . The rest is coordination.

I've taken to carrying the Skeletool clipped to my pocket with a Micra slipped into the bottom. That way, I've got scissors, a file and tweezers if I need them, and the awesome pliers, blade and bit driver on the hip ready to go. I also carry a craftsman keychain screwdriver on my keys, which gives me four slot bits, so I can replace the slot bit on the Skeletool with the allen bit and have even more capability.

Put the handle in a 90 degrees from the screwdriver lots of torque that way. You missed the bottle opener on it.

The Skeletool is to be used in L configuration when using driver bits. Make it to form a L shape and try again.

I have been EDCing Skeletool for more than a year and I fully agree with your assesments.BTW the cap lifter also works great and the pocket clip works better than for amny forlders. The only drawback I have noticed is that squeezing pliers is not that comfortable because the screwdriver digs ito your palm. Put in the flat bit and them try using pliers and you will see what I mean. Other than that it is agreat tool and I love it.

they should make the holes octagonal so that the holes can be used to open screws with octagonal heads..in general all holes of different sizes will be a spanner/screw-driver

How is the pocket clip? Does it retain the tool really well in your pocket (not just a little retention at the end lip or something)?

I just ordered one of these on amazon for 35 dollars, super excited.

I should point out I've had two replacement skeletools due to the pliers's breaking, and I am currently on my third, which is now sitting in a drawer after purchasing my Leatherman Wave.

Hello scout, nice review. If its not a pain could u compare the pliers of a skeletool and victorinox swiss champ? Im not asking for a video just for a comment here. Im asking cause I'm planning to purchase a swiss champ, I'm almost on the verge of it. Though i don't use pliers on a daily basis I sucks to not have large pliers. That's when i noticed the skeletool, the skeletool and swisschamp don't have any over lap of tools, they compliment each other well. But i live in country where there aren't any shops that sell leathermans nearby so I'm left to gauge via online images. And the skeletool looks pretty small. So if you could help me out I would b grateful. Thanks. Ciao.

If your going to get this knife or the freestyle, get the CX version. I have the 440c version and it will rust if you look at it funny. also chipped the blade in a few place after the knife slipped on a fence post and hit a nail [lightly hit i might add] The 440c version is not a "hard use" multitool at all. Mine rusted the entire side of the blade just sitting in my pocket on a warm day from the humidity [was lightly oiled that morning as well]

Looks like I've found my new multitool. I have a CRKT zillatool which has the same features but the pocket clip broke off. The skeletool looks like an upgrade. I have very few requirements out of my EDC tool... #1 pocket clip 2. Knife 3. Pliers 4. Screwdrivers... Appears the skeletool has it covered. Thanks for the review.

cx or original? i cant decide and i need to know asap, knife would be used in both outdoor and edc environments, also plleirs would mostly be used for tightening skateboard hardware, and so will the screwdriver.

Yep, in my edc , I rotate my tactical knives about every month or two, just depending , but two tools I always carry and never rotate, is the leatherman CX skeletool and my Quark AA squared flashlight, absolutely love them and use them quite a bit more than I thought I would need to, lol. Great review. I purchase the SOG Reactor as soon as it was available, but it was disappointingly flimsy, so I'm looking towards the Skeletool. That said, I gotta ask; what's with the obligatory "in hand" catch-phrase every knife review uses? Where else is it going to feel good? "Feels great on my forehead." Or, "Feels great on my dingus". Just got a new boat, and man, it feels great "around body". Ok.. got that out of my system. No way meant as an attack, just a bit of ridiculousness. I'll likely pick one of these up, to use "in hand". 8)

Nice review. My favorate Leatherman is the Skeletool CX. Such a great multi-tool.

If it had a saw this is the one I would go for. Might go for it anyway.

If you buy one i Canada it comes with a Robinson bit too as well very useful

First impression just from looks, I LIKE, after the review I like MORE, will order this tool in a few IM sure. As for the serrated blade, I'll say I like that feature. Being in Law Enforcement for so long, I seen where serrated blades come in handy, rope cutting seat belts ect. So thumbs up to your review, and to this tool very cool on the cool factor :) ~John

I have the leatherman freestyle pretty much the same thing but without the biner and the driver. I love it!!!! Try it sometime if you can ;)

I've got one and everything is awesome except the knife. The wire cutter cut paper, the bit stay in place, the finish is fine. Back to the knife, Leatherman cut the liner lock too long so the knife doesn't lock open. I'm usually very pleased with leathermans products but this one is getting returned for another Skeletool.

@ 11mins demonstrating the screw driver; if you really need torque, just open the knife only halfway, in an L-form; this gives you al the torque you could possibly need...

Most of the other tools in multi tools are useless, at least to me. The tiny scissors, a 3" saw, who needs them. Plus most leathermans that have the bit changer also have another flat head built in. This has the tools that actually work well in multi tools, and no extra crap.

That knife would be much nicer without the serrations.

Don't know, but it is very similar to Bonobo's "Days to Come".

with the screwdriver I found I can open the handle half way and use it in a grip and turn fashion and it doesn't pinch me.
