The first heavy duty multi tool from Leatherman had a lot of firsts. It was the first to have locking tools. The first to include wire stripper and wire crimpers. It was also the first Leatherman tool to include a stand alone serrated blade. There was a lot to like about this multi tool when it hit the market, let's check it out.

As I have been geeking out on multi-tools lately I have watched almost every video on RU-vid. Lol. You are literally the only channel where the presenter has a clue about tools. I appreciate the content from other creators but they are not actual users. Well done.

The OG Supertool is my favorite - beautiful design, better size (for me) than the PST, and more comfortable to use (the inside tools; not necessarily the pliers) than any tool since. Yes, there have been functional improvements in the newer tools; but the Supertool, for me, was the pinnacle of elegance.

I use a super tool 300 5 days a week. It litterly took a year to break in and be able to drop the handle when cutting wire. I use the flat head and cutters the most the other tools are normally ignored. Gets wet all the time plus covered in mud. Sometimes I spray it down with break cleaner. But it rarely gets cleaned. I work on a pipeline crew so nothing stays clean

I have one I bough while Christmas shopping in 1994. I still carry it in my back pocket. Great when a field repair is needed. Good video.

I was a fulltime stage and film tech from 1980 to 2007, I and most techs started with the original, they were the best, and went to the super, my super #2 from 2003 finally broke the saw blade, sent it corp recently and they sent me a new 300. In the meantime I bought a used, complete surge on ebay just to keep one on my belt. They are by far the best for the money. The upsize to super really made the difference. I work my surge hard even now retired on a farm. My original and 1st super were lifetime warranty, my 03 super was my first one dated inside. I have worn one virtually continuously for almost 40 years, a must have at all times. My grandson is 4, he will get the new 300 in a couple of years or so. WWG1WGA MAGA GOD BLESS GOD SPEED GOD WINS.

This was my first MT as well. Got it for Christmas in 96. Unfortunately I lost track of it after getting a wave for my birthday in 2000. Wish I knew what happened to it, but at this point It’s very unlikely I’ll ever see it again. Thanks for the video and bringing back old memories 😀

Found one in a door pocket of a ranger I bought a few years ago lost it a year after I found it and had to have another one I settled on a super tool 300 and red g10 charge plus but still really need to find this original like I had it has the flat drivers I like best

Leatherman states that they buy the rough casting for the pliers from Mexico and does all the fit and finishing in the US. Can't blame the stiff pliers on Mexico. Just happens when production numbers are more important than quality control.

I would argue that the old awl is more robust because it's short and thick and you're not going to break it, the problem is that kind of suck. You can punch a hole but they're too short and dull to be very general purpose.

Great video, thank you so much for the reminiscence. 🙂 This was my first Leatherman. Bought it in 1994 (i think) and carried it constantly. In the early 2000s I switched to a Wave because of weight and size as EDC and took the SuperTool only for more "serious occasions". The plier head loosened up quite a lot, so I sent it in for repair, but they did not have the original plier heads (anymore?) and so they offered me a SuperTool 300 instead. Although I don't carry a plier based multitool anymore as EDC for several reasons, the SuperTool 300 is still my "goto-tool" for planned onsite works on machinery. Still love it. :-)

I got this tool in '94 and have EDC since then. I look at it now with the worn parts and minor damage (don't use the flat drivers to pry) and think how great it has been.

Leatherman needs to go back and take a long look at how great they used to be as a fully American located company and start making tools worth their price like the original Supers

It’s mind blowing to see the quality on some of the older tools. Even the quality of the OG Wave versus the newer Wave. Especially with the file, knife grinds, secondary bevels, plied heads, etc.

this is the og big boy, victorinox designed their swisstool after it i think. My father used to carry it and thrashed it hard. I hope leatherman can restore it to former glory, because its a great heirloom.

I’m still using a Tool. One side says 0995 and the other is 1095. It’s close to 25 years old and still looks new. I rarely use it and regularly clean it and re oil all the joints. Leatherman all the way. I spent $100 on a gerber diesel and hated it I thought it was a joke at first or broken. Nope, just not near Leatherman quality.

Great tool! I abused it for years working in cement trades and it never let me down. I broke my skeletool plier head opening a bottle. Nothing is as good as old school leatherman. I didn't know that the plier heads are made in Mexico. That may explain all the quality control issues with current models

I can imagine a discussion with the designer of the lock mechanism where he says, “That’s ridiculous! What kind of idiot would open all of the tools at the same time??”

Mine is from 97, I still use it regularly. I filed the tip of serrated blade down, sharpening the awl and the smallest screwdriver now can tighten tiny glasses screws. I love mine but I hope Leatherman stop using this type of pivot screw on current models, Trox, Hex or Slotted head would be nice.

Hello, Ben - a most enjoyable video - I started with a PST, 01/00, with the original sheath. I also have my late father's OG Super Tool, 06/99, also with the original sheath... He tended to be hard on his tools, but this ST is still in good shape. I have other Leathermans, but I still use these two from time to time...A question - I noticed 2 dates on some of my tools - example : 03/99 on one side, 06/99 on the other...which date should I use for warranty purposes? Thanks!

Great explanation, as to why the SuperTool was such a great innovation! Got mine in 97, while in the Canadian Military. A very versatile tool for it’s day. I much prefer the two knife blades. Still competing in 2022! I do like my Signal, but I don’t use it as much as I used my SuperTool! It lives in the pocket of the drivers door now! Keep your smiles on!

The square shank on tgd newer Phillips screw driver accepts the adapter to use normal 1/4 hex bits !! The straight handles on the PST and Original Super Tool were a self limiting tool saver ! If you swerve hard enough to break the pliers, you feel it first !! Gotta love Leatherman tools !

Waited for this review! My dad got this model right after it came out in Norway, and I "borrowed" it around 10-12 years ago. He got it back last year when I got a used Rebar. The tool is still in great condition, and still my favourite to handle when using the inner tools. Really digs into the hand when using the pliers, though

I have the original Supertool, not the 300.My Papi passed away and I found it going through his stuff. It is new and never used. I think the dedicated Phillips driver and flat head drivers are superior and work like a charm. I just bought a used Letherman Surge yesterday at a flea market for $10.00. I'm not so crazy about the bit holder, or included bit at all. It has a broken can opener which I will have replaced .I've been watching many videos on Letherman multi tools and the best option I've decided on getting is the Letherman Supertool 300, but NOT the 300m series, as it has the bit option instead of the dedicated drivers option. Thanx for the video my Brother!
