Ozark Trail has a new multi tool that takes a lot of it's design cues from the Leatherman Wave+. How does it stack up against the original? Let's find out.

All you have to do is put a small magnet in the multiforce and you can use regular bits. If you do the same for the extention, it makes it feel amazing. I picked up 2 small stacks for $6 and I had a replacement for a screwdriver that had a magnet break out of it. For $6 and I have enough for so many applications, also to be used on my fridge, I couldn't be happier. Leatherman does have great bits but I don't have the extra bits and they are currently sold out, the last time I looked at least. I have star, square, slotted, phillips, hex, and a socket bits that I have from my screwdriver set and I can use them with my multiforce, with a .25 cent magnet, cause I have 25 magnets and with tax, they equal to .25 cents each. The bits hold so good that you have to really pull to get them out. They hold screws so much better that I am thinking about putting those magnets in my extensions for my drill and impact driver. I owe this magnet find to Ozark cause I wouldn't have tried these magnets out, if it wasn't for this multiforce hack. I went to my hardware store and explained what I wanted and the guy threw one in and we were both trying it out. They are just 6X2mm magnets. I didn't even glue it, they went in and they are not coming out. They are stuck. 😆

What I did for the bit with my multiforce is I tossed the bit it came with went to Michaels crafts store bought a pack of 1/4" × 1/8" thick magnets you get 6 for $5 put too inside the bit holder problem solved. now I can use any bit I want even sockets options are endless. Not so with the Leatherman I never liked those flat bit I do like my Leathermans though. Good video.

I had a Leatherman for over 10 years. The screw driver bit always fell out, & disappeared. I completely abandoned that part of my Leatherman after the 3rd replacement. I had to do 2 warranty repairs for broken needle nose. Then last month I dropped it in the sand while cutting some barb wire. I watched it fall out of my hand & disappear in the sand. I searched for my Leatherman for 3 to 4 hours, & I never found it. That Leatherman has so more sentimental value I couldn’t bring myself to replace it. I still visit the area where I lost it, & I look for it at least once a week. I’ll never stop looking for it. I had no idea how much that Leatherman meant to me until I lost it. In mean time I’m gonna try this Ozark Multiforce. It feels like a good quality tool thus far, but we’ll see how she holds up.

Double ended ball detent bits are actually fairly common in 11 in one screw drivers like the ones I use in electrical work, klein, milwaukee, dewalt, and others so at least in my case that is actually sort of a plus.

Viewing this video 11 months later, I have some other comments. First, this is a very thorough and very helpful comparison. A lot of thought has gone into it, and I think anyone getting ready to get a mid-sized multitool would be very well served by this comparison. In fact, I think you ought to consider how you could develop your spreadsheet comparison for sale. However, I don't agree with the way you get your final total, and that may be because different people will weight different aspects of the comparison differently. As I see it, you have rated 4 different aspects of a multitool, here. One aspect is Tools Quality - everything from the first item through 'magnifying glass'. The second aspect is Usability - ease of use, ergonomics, and rust resistance. The third aspect is Cost Factor - price and warranty. The fourth is weight. I could still use your spreadsheet pretty much as is, but I would score two of those aspects differently. When it comes to weight, I don't think it makes much sense to deduct one point for every ounce of weight. Surely the best weight for a multitool is not 0 ounces! In fact, when comparing full-sized multitools, right out of the box, I automatically downgrade one that isn't as hefty as my SuperTool (at least at the outset) because that means it has more empty space that the maker could have filled with more substantial tools. Likewise, it is unrealistic to think that the best multitool would cost nothing. Personally, I think I would make the Wave the standard for weight in its class, and subtract a point per ounce of variance in either direction. In this case, the Ozark would lose a point for the ounce difference. Or a formula based on the Tools Quality total ratio, in this case (72:70)x1oz. would still be one point. As far as price is concerned, in this case, I'd be tempted to subtract 1 point for each $10 of difference, but a fairer approach, involving some research would be to average the price of units with comparable tools in the same size class from reputable sources to compare to. In that case, the Ozark might add a point or two while the Wave would probably lose a few. As for the warranty, you haven't really quantified it, and as you implied individuals' situations would weigh in. The Vic warranty may be more of a selling point to Europeans than us. At my age, a 25-year warranty is likely to be a lifetime + warranty and I have no progeny so how big a deal is it?

First of all, I have a wave, so I know it is a good tool. For this video, I think the MultiForce actually is the better value buy. Your test shows it at about half to 2/3 the quality of the Wave, but is close to $60.00 less than the Wave. Very informative video. Thank you. BTW, I've carried the Gerber 600 pro for a little over 25 yrs and it is my prefered tool because I like the quick access to the pliers, which is the tool I use most.

This is interesting. It looks like Ozark Trail has improved a lot. My first multitool was an Ozark trail multitool and it was a piece of trash. It look like their multitool are now rivaling Leatherman multitools. It looks like Learherman has encountered an "Innovators Dilemma" scenario and is in danger of losing market share to a new entrant.

I was looking through your vids and didn't notice any video that specifically discussed how to break in a multi-tool or maintain it. I just obtained my Multiforce and man was it a stiff bugger out of the package. I worked on it for 3-4 hours while cleaning and lubing it to loosen it up quite a bit. I was wondering what technique you use when breaking in a multi-tool and what products you use when doing so. Also, what is your procedure for maintaining your multi-tool? Thanks!

Caution, wall of text incoming :D Probably the most comfortable multi-tool I've ever used has been a Coast model I was gifted. It was an EDC for several years. Just recently had to retire it for at least a temporary bit as I think some of the uses I put the pliers to screwed up some of the screws holding it together. I've had a little bit of exposure to Leatherman MTs, and the ones I came into contact with were decidedly uncomfortable. Couldn't tell you models, though. And actually, up to having the Coast, everything I had tried (which was most definitely budget level stuff) was decidedly uncomfortable. Now, for this review, I thank you for taking the time to do the side by side comparison. I am still a budget level buyer, so given the closeness of most of the tool functionality, the budget pricing of the Multiforce definitely carries a bit more weight with me. And I'm willing to do a bit of modification to fix some of the issues for me that I see based on your evaluation. Been really liking your evaluations and analyses of various and assorted tools, decided I'd probably better subscribe with this one and stop depending on your videos showing up in my recommendations :D

Great review! I agree with most of what you said about both tools. I own two Waves, the original and a 2nd generation model. I also own 2 of the Ozark Trails tools. The Ozark Trail is the best multitool Walmart has ever offered under their name by far. It is a great tool for the money. It is not made with the same quality of the Leatherman, but it cost lest than half the price. I like the driver on the Ozark Trail better than the Leatherman actually. You can use standard 1/4 bits in it. All you have to do is put a small button magnet inside of the driver on the tool (Not the extension) and any standard bit will fit in and stay. With the magnet in the driver, you can use a standard 1/4 inch extension, and then use standard bits. A lot of people seem to be calling the OT a clone, and it is not. While there are some similarities obviously, it is not an exact replica, which is what a clone is. Anyhow, I would not use this as replacement for a Wave if I needed a tool that I was going to abuse and use real hard, but for everything else, for what I use these things for it has been working great!

To even compare the Ozark Trail to the Wave Plus speak volumes in regards to the potential of the Ozark Trail. The Wave is a staple in the multi-tool world, and a standard to which every other similar-sized multi-tool has been compared for a long, long time. Granted, the Multiforce is 'inspired' by the Wave's design, but even then, the fact that its features may barely lose, match, or ever exceed the Wave's, that is truly significant. The Wave's pattern has expired, and Leatherman has to accept the clones, knock-offs, and copies that will adopt the design. Maybe Leatherman should follow the competitors' example, and adopt some different designs and features, but put their craftsmanship, quality, and warranty behind, to offer some new multi-tools that will get the market excited. Another great video, Ben. I am happy to see your channel grow. Keep up the excellent work, and I am looking forward to more comparisons and reviews from you.

Ok, here goes. Great review, agree in almost every area. To get bits for the multi Force go to amazon and look for the Tacklife 16 in 1 screw driver which has included 8 double sided ball retention bits. $12.00 The pocket clip that comes free with the multiforce and the extender adds to the product value wise so either is should be in the ergonomics or somehow added to the overall value in some manner. Basically ( tonge in cheek moment here) your telling me that a $37 dollar tool is 6 points less then a $100 dollar tool. Yep, I can buy 3 multi forces for every wave. That’s a warranty feature right there. Wave is my favorite multi tool. Gerber 600 bladeless is my most carried multi tool. The multiforce is my gift to everyone in the family because 15 -$37 gifts is easier then 15 -$99 gifts. And ozark trails much better then nothing or another way is ozark trails multiforce is 93% of leatherman wave in abilities at 1/3 the price. Thx for the review, awesome job! Ball detention bits not retention bits, have to remember that!!! 🥴
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 4 года назад
That’s a great find on that screwdriver with ball detention bits. Thank you for that. You’re right about adding a bit of value to the Multiforce because of pocket clip and extension. I should have given it an additional two points for those features. I feel like the Ozark Trail offers a lot of value. Pains me to admit to that being a Leatherman fan. It will definitely be appealing to a great number of people, on price alone. It says something that this tool rates as highly as it does in my personal opinion. Which would I choose? I still lean to the Wave. Mostly for the file, saw, and knife blades. I also have extensive experience with the build quality of Leatherman tools. It is hard to argue that the Multiforce does not have a high quality to price ratio. It is a surprisingly good multi tool.

1 additional thought, possibly down the road. I would like to see a comparison of sub $50 multi tools. Gerber suspension nxt as a example. It may not be a fair comparison as the Multiforce compares to $100 dollar tools but it would make fair comparisons dollar for dollar! Looking forward to your next video sir! This Guy, the wave is my favorite tool by quite a bit. Maybe if I had the surge it would compete for that top spot. I purchased the better sheath, extender and 2 clip bit set for the wave. In the extra pocket I have the olight I3t 180 lumen flashlight. With this set I feel I can handle any small daily task that comes up including many auto repair issues on the road. It is a awesome tool. But as a gift or first time user you have to purchase the extra extender for the used wave, unless it is already there. Buy the sheath to hold the extender. I’m not going to mention pocket clip or extra bits as I carry in a sheath and extra bits for either choice is a extra expenditure. This is all added expense and effort that a average buyer probably will not go through. The 2 of us will, which is why we like the wave. Most people buy and be done with it so the greatest package available to the first time consumer is the best. Then when they are hooked they can upgrade. The ozark trails with its flaws and a few improvements is a solid first purchase for a average consumer which they won’t wear out its tools and this may just sit in a glove box for that occasional use. You are correct a gen 2 wave is better. I debate if a average consumer will make that purchase over a new product. And, I picked up my 15 sets at 25% off so it after taxes was less then $30. It was my one time a year purchase at Walmart after Black Friday when I get everything off at -25%. Lol So I agree with you for a informed customer a used wave is best. I just have a different viewpoint and opinion on a first time or average customer.

Nice video. On page 15:50 illustrate diamond file sharpening a drill bit at the nose. If we file the left edge the cutting edge on drill bit will dig into the coating and remove diamond more aggressively. So always file the edge to your right hand side. When done first edge rotate the finished edge from right side to your left. Now the unfinished edge is on your right. Start refresh the second edge on your right. Do not apply down force using diamond coated file, ever. It is so abrasive only need to glide filing.

Just wondering things like if the pliers hold up and don't go out of alignment eventually with hard use. If anything has loosened up over time or if the wire cutters get dulled up really bad. I mainly just hate Leathermans propriety bits. I was thinking about getting the Gerber center drive for the awesome driver and having sprung pliers (even though I don't generally love Gerber), a wave, or even a skeletool as I mainly need drivers, pliers and a knife use in a pinch. Maybe a pry tool.

1) AWESOME comparison and work setting the comparison up. 2) The needle nose pliers comparison was a dead heat, but you added fit and finish into the grading instead of just performance so put the wave ahead 3) two of the comparisons the multiforce you said was slightly better but you still called them even. 4) you didn’t factor into the screw driver that the multiforce CAME with the extension. If you had compared strait out of the package, the wave would not have had an extension and it should have affected the score

I have the Wave (2nd gen) and have used it alot. I still carry it everyday and don't even feel the need to upgrade to the plus model lol. That being said the Ozark isn't that bad especially when thinking about cost and diminishing returns. The Wave is roughly double the price but overall is only slightly better than the Ozark. Nothing against Leatherman. I think alot of it comes down to USA production vs China. So there's pride of ownership and supporting Ameeican jobs too. It's kinda like with pocket knives. Is the $100 knife going to be 5 times better than the $20 knife? Probably not but it is still slightly better. The Ozark might be good too for someone who isn't sure if they want to carry a "heavy" full size multitool and doesn't want to spend $100 on a Wave just to find out they don't like carrying it.

Bro, this is the best comparison review I've ever seen! Anyway, I have an offtop question. I'm military, so a multitool is must-have. But in combat it's easy to loose or destroy it. So is Leatherman as a brand worth to invest or maybe better buy 3 multitools from Walmart and don't care about? Inb4 I have some big multitool for ca. $15 and it works well but not great, so I'm thinking about sth new or better

What a fantastic comparative video. Very well done. When will you be releasing your scoring excel spreadsheet? The only question I have is that you indicated to get similar accessories for the LM Wave+ you'd need to spend $140 ($40 extra dollars to obtain the pocket clip, extension bar and storage sheath) vs. $40 for the Ozark Trail. Wouldn't that mean then that you would need to deduct 14 points rather than 10 from the Wave+? That would make the Wave+ only one point higher vs the Ozark Trail in your scoring system ;)

Awesome honest comparison Ben. I actually went out and bought two ozark trails for my dad and neighbor for Christmas because they alway comment on my wave +. The bit that comes with the ozark is trash but will be easily remedied. One thing I disagree with in your assesmnent is the ergonomics of the wave being higher than the ozark trail. Any wave user has probably experiences the Wave Pinch, where the back of the outside tools pinch the palm of your hand. It can be quite painful especially if the pliers slip off their bite. I dont see that being possible with the OT and that alone would have it on par with the wave for ergonomics. I would give the OT a slight hit in I wish the main blade wasn't on the leg of the pocket clip. Thanks for the inspiration on the original video as you made two old men happy with their new multitool.

You’re quite welcome. I can understand completely your rationale for the ergonomics. That is kind of why I wanted to set this chart up, because I know other will likely see things differently than I do. It gives you the opportunity to see my reasoning for certain ratings, but allows viewers the tools to come up with their own ratings as well. I would be interested to know how you score them out. First off, great job. You really broke things down with great explanations. However, I would add three things. With the addition of a small battery the Multiforce now can hold regular bits, not the half bits only on a Leatherman. Second, total cost of ownership. You are going to pay more for a pocket clip, a bit extension and I feel a good sheath for the Leatherman as I really like the sheath on the Multiforce. Adding these up increases the $99 price on the Leatherman considerably. And third, you may be able to buy three Multiforce tools back to back (got mine for $32) to one Wave for a total of 15 years of warranty overall. I believe the Wave original to be the best overall in utility, but not as good as my Swiss tool. If you have a Multiforce there is no reason to go out and spend $100 + on a Wave. Unless you need that 4 point can opener really bad!

The Victorinox warranty for the states, is stellar. I sent two knives to be repaired by Victorinox, their customer service told me exactly which facility to ship my knives too. They only charge $5 bucks to cover return shipping cost. They repaired everything I asked them too, they even fashioned a new blade for my Victorinox Solo, which they made a clip point blade for it, instead of the classic spear point. They returned both knives with all the original parts that had been replaced. Overall they took really good care of me and my knives.

Great Comparison video. The one real downfall the Multiforce has is it's bit driver, because it requires the bits with the ball in them, and they can be hard to find. I have friends who passed up the tool for that reason only. HOWEVER, before making a decision, check your toolboxes. I had a number of bits from tools my father had. I found multiple 2 inch long screwdriver bits including large sizes, a 3 inch long Philips bit that was ground into a marlinspike, a quarter inch socket adapter, and a full sized nail puller. For $38, with these attachments, and the included bit extender, the Multiforce wins hands down.

American labor and made with all in house parts. No questions asked 25 year warranty compared to their 5 year limited warranty. So for the next 25 years the Leatherman will cost you $100. The next 25 years the Ozark Trail could cost you $200 if you had to replace it every 5 years after the warranty runs out. Quality up front costs money folks but saves money in the long run.

The workmanship on the leather man wave plus in on a different planet that most multi tools made. To compare a Ferrari to a mustang is a fool’s errand. I watched this just for a good laugh. When taking out the “tek” screw.. which looks like a # 8 x3/4 the ozaek trail would have dominated that with its socket minus the driver bit as that’s a 1/4” head. The leatherman doesn’t have that option and it’s the most common sheet metal screw size. Of course you could put the adapter on the wave and it also could do that.. but adapters aside that’s one area the test could have been better. Using the standard slot on a screw with a 1/4” hex is not the best method.

@txtoolcrib 4 года назад
I don't have any first hand knowledge of that. I will tell you what I know about patent laws in the US. Most patents are good up to 10 years, in some cases that is extended to 14 years. Major changes in those patents, such as the design change from 1st to 2nd generation Wave will often times be sufficient enough to extend the patent for an additional 10 years on the newer design. It has been 14 years since the Wave 2nd generation was released, so I would tend to believe that it is an accurate statement that the patent ran out on that design. As such, it is free to the market to copy and modify as they see fit. Free market at it's finest.

I have nothing against cheap multitools, but having 5 times the warranty at a little over double the price pushes the Wave ahead for me. As far as that goes, Gerber sent me a brand new Suspension because my old one (over 12 years old) was missing a screw, so I can testify to them standing behind theirs even at $27-ish when I bought mine. Even if they aren't great and I feel like a lot of their stuff is half-assed, I can't say too much bad about a company that at least takes care of its customers. lol Warranty definitely has a lot to do with justifying the price for something like a Leatherman or Victorinox. I'd normally prefer the 'original' tool than a copy but when the original tool makes it unnecessarily difficult to service (i.e security/tamper-proof Torx) I'll always go for the more open/user serviceable option. If a well respected pliers company (i.e Knipex ;-) wanted to corner the multi-tool market they should release a modular multi-tool with open-source/license free specs. That opens up the market for add-on/alternative tools to competitors but it also builds brand awareness and encourages adoption of your base/core tool. It's similar to the software market (I'm thinking more Android than iPhone but still...) where most of the useful tools are developed by other companies but the core tool (the pliers, or in my bad analogy the operating system) will be much harder to replicate.

At 71-66, the Multiforce would be a better value if we accept the rubric presented here. Obviously some of us weigh somethings more than others, but at least we have a starting point for discussion here. BUT ... didn't you have to buy another $40 worth of add-ons in the previous video in order for the Wave to have all of the things that the Multiforce came with? It shouldn't have to get the extra help of playing with a different tool - which means it failed almost completely at doing what it's meant to do. To my surprise, I feel they're pretty much level, depending on the task and based on your testing. You completely ignored the pocket clip aside from mentioning it as a potential hotspot as well, which seemed odd as it's something that's definitely worth extra points for it's utility. All in all, Leatherman really need to start upping their game in the value department. Either drop the price considerably or increase the overall quality of the product materials while remaining at the same price. Either way, it was grim viewing for this leatherman fan.

Victorinox has a US office, and a great warranty record in America. Even in tiny Israel, in Asia, we have a Victorinox representative. My oldest Victorinox and Leatherman are approaching 25 years. Wave, Supertool, and Swisstool. No more warranty soon on the Leatherman. SwissTool knives do not look as serious as Leatherman knives. But as a Victorinox user for over 50 years, they pass the test of useage. Yes the SwissTool blade looks like their pocket knife spear point. Yet it functions as well as the Leatherman blade. As a slicer, maybe better. So far never had to send back any Victorinox. Ozark may be seriously coming up in the MT world. Also, while the warranty may be longer for the Wave, nothing beats being able to walk into a store to do a quick exchange. Being able to use standard 1/4 inch bits with the Multiforce is a huge advantage and bits with a detent or that are magnetic are very easy to find and inexpensive.
