As a 22 year combat veteran with a daughter- I cant tell you how much this film effected me. I also can't explain how lonely I felt when I looked around and realized that most people didnt/couldn't connect with it's themes. Thank you for your passionate review. It affirmed my emotional response to the film and made me feel just a little less isolated.

Such a great film. Not for everyone because, as Mark says, It's a show don't tell film. You need to sit quiet and give yourself over to it without expectation. No flashbacks, no exposition, you are jus WITH these characters. One of the best films i've seen all year. i sat with a massive tear meandering like a forest stream down the hill of my cheek at the end. 10/10.

I really liked it too but I never got emotional about it maybe because its not a sentimental film, it's so natural looking and sounding, almost documentary like. It's not a film that's trying to tug at your heart strings, characters don't explode in tears or anything like that, it never gets sappy like a Speilberg movie or a Toy Story ending. It's a quiet thoughtful film for me that I like to think about once it's over.

Just watched this movie and it was very good. Sad, but good. Ben Foster has never gotten the attention or awards he deserves, and the young actress was incredible.

@OscarRiba 3 года назад
A bit late to the comment, but why is it "sad"? They both get what they want, and reach a happy compromise that suits both of them. Yes it may not fit the standard "happy ending" that it's so common, but I am happy for both of them to have found what they want which is also best for each other. It took them the film to figure that out, and for that, they grew as human beings and bettered themselves and their relationship.

@@OscarRiba the last scenes of the dad are of him crying as his daughter leaves him and he goes off into the woods broken and alone. I don’t think that’s how he wants it. I loved this film. Beautiful photography, subtly moving score, a lived-in supporting cast, and two powerful central performances. Ben Foster's always great, but Thomasin McKenzie is just... i don't know how such a young actor has the wisdom to pull off the transformation this character undergoes, and all with just a few words, with just gestures and expressions. It really is an amazing performance. Kermode's right: it does not take a wrong step.

I am usually not the drama viewer and would certainly not have watched this gem on streaming without remembering this brilliant review of wich I support every word. Thank you Mark. When drama has loud characters arguing all the time I'm out asap. It's the quiete pieces that hit me. I loved Cuarón's Roma. Aside from the characters it was the artsy harmonious camera that gripped me. While 'leave no trace's nature scenes are also breathtakingly beautiful I want to add a praise to the director of photography (and the location scouts and the set designers): I didn't realize there was a camera at all - I was there with the charecters. While this film has a strong melancholy feeling throughout it didn't have a single bad/evil person in it. Everybody just tried to help - some professionally, most out of love.

With only one other film, Winters Bone, this directors ability to absorb the viewer into the atmosphere of the films world, her reverence for the truth of the characters, and all the space she leaves open for the audience to engage with the nuance and detail in, this dire or, Debra Granik, is in my opinion perhaps the best out there right now. I just like how at the end of this clip, the guy starts to tear up and then you realize there’s another guy in the room who goes “okay okay, stop now.” And the clip ends. No crying!

It was a solid movie with good performances, and just the realism of the production was very well done. But the arc of the story and the characters was completely predictable. You knew the second the dad left the cabin that he wasn't coming back, and you knew the second the lady hung the bag of food on the tree that the daughter would do the same thing for her father at the end. This tropey screenplay stuff feels directly at odds with the realistic style of the film. It just didn't mesh. Also, the fact that everyone they met was super nice and helpful, even the social worker lady who caught them, was on the one hand an interesting choice, but also felt weirdly unrealistic. For a movie about the bitter harshness of nature and reality, they seemed to be living in a fantasy bubble where everyone is well meaning. A better film about the struggle of man, society, and nature is still Into the Wild, also filled with terrific performances.

I didn't think it was as spectacular as Kermode implies, but it certainly had some genuinely touching moments between father and daughter. A little too slow for my liking but the use of showing emotions rather than telling was effective. However, that doesn't always allow for an entertaining picture. I felt there needed to be more jeopardy between the lives Foster wanted for them and what the daughter desired, and there wasn't enough of an emotional punch when the credits rolled. I don't want a soap opera, but I wanted a bit more closure and some more background to their backstory. But then that's life. Sometimes closure doesn't happen.

One of the worst films I've ever seen, and Kermode loves it. Funny old world. The cinematography was horrible, looked like it was filmed by a child with a phone camera who has no experience, clearly unplanned shots. Had a lousy script that was full of inconsistencies. The characters were completely unlikable, it had no drama, no tension, was totally predictable. Just an awful film in every way. Honestly felt that it had not one redeeming feature.

What inconsistencies? Everything else is basically up to personal tastes. But i didn't see anything too inconsistent about it. I found it to be an extremely focused story, with a tonne subtlety to it that didn't rely on your typical drama and tension to make you feel something. And I didn't think the ending was predictable at alllllll

@@jeremy29tunage Being that I am a cinematographer and editor, I don't consider any of those things to be up to personal taste. Handing a 5 year old a camera and saying ' film something' or handing the same camera to Sergio Leone or Orson Welles, if anyone said the 5 year old is better and that's their opinion- well their opinion is wrong. From a creative standpoint - this film looked like it was shot by the 5 year old.

George Massey - You didn't answer the question regarding inconsistencies.

@@TrentRidley It's been two months since I saw it, can't remember - although I do recall thinking that they seemed so joyless living in the woods, that it seemed to go against all reason for them living there. And there were a group of others living near them in the woods ... there was a significant flaw regarding them, but I can't remember what it was. I really have no desire to watch it again to find out, but if you see it again, by all means keep your eyes open. And as for subtly and silence, better to watch a film like 2001, or even Unbreakable, or an animated film like Otomo Katsuhiro's Memories - a perfect example of show don't tell. To be honest, you could watch the episode of The X Files 'Home.' Watch it with the sound off, the camera is so skillful that it tells virtually the whole story, and that was television. Similarly, the original Twilight Zone once aired a completely silent episode 'an occurence at owl creek bridge' it's only 20 minutes, and an exercise in skilful silent filmmaking so I suggest checking it out if you liked this movie - you'll probably really like it.

George Massey - I think they were largely joyless. Not necessarily completely unhappy, but not full of joy either. Although he very much rejected the excesses of modern society, I think he chose to live in the woods with his daughter primarily as a way to manage his PTSD without the need for med's. He had essentially removed himself from those things that triggered his symptoms, such as tall buildings, unfamiliar cars, crowded public spaces, helicopters, etc. Things that would have represented possible dangerous situations during his military service in urban combat zones. So yeah, I think the father's mental illness played as big a role in them coming to live in the forest as any sense that they were seeking some sort of ideological utopia. The other group living in the woods were other veterans that like him had been largely discarded by society following their service. He sold his med's to them and I gather would have otherwise traded with them. As for how close they lived to one another, there wasn't really any indication I don't think. It could have been 500m apart or 10 miles apart. As for the technical stuff, I'll yield to your obvious superior knowledge as I really don't know anything about it.

This movie sucks. I wish I could get back the hour and 45 minutes that I wasted watching this.
