Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and it's time to Leave The World Behind as we breakdown the brand new Netflix movie.
-
Set at what seems to be the end of the world we follow a family as they start to experience what the downfall of humanity is like from an isolated holiday home. It's a terrible advert for tesla...and EE...and Netflix now I think ofit but it's great for BnBs and collecting physical Media. Throughout this video we're gonna be talking about what happens at the end, the hidden meaning and some of the Mr Robot Easter Eggs that we spotted in it. Heavy Spoilers ahead so if you don't want to know then I highly recommend that you leave this video behind. If you enjoy crap puns like that please hit the thumbs up button and dont forget to subscribe for videos like this every day.
With that out the way, huge thank you for clicking this, now let's get into the movie.
-
Ok so the movie follows Amanda and her husband Clay as they decide to leave the world behind and take a vacation out with their two kids. At the holiday home they start to experience strange things like an oil tanker driving ashore and unexpected visitors in the form of George and Ruth. They clearly know more than theyre letting in and as we watch the film it seems like there's something strange going on in the country. There's been cyber attacks, the animals are acting weird and strange flyers spelling doom have been dropped on the location. As things begin to ramp up we learn that there may have been an attack on the country which happened in 3 stages.

Isn't it ironic that we're obsessed with figuring out the end of the movie, just as Rose in the film was obsessed with figuring out the end of Friends, yet missing the crux of the matter? It's amazing that no one has noticed it so far. The directors did a good job. The end of the movie is ultimately a mirror of our reality.

Spot on. Rose cares more about two fictional Characters rather then the main people in her life. Witch like you have stated is the case today. People care more about celebrities then each other.
@leveljoe
@leveljoe 6 месяцев назад
Nope not ironic at all. To leave a frightened woman stranded on the roadside? WTF It was a cyber attack. It was civil war. It was a coup d'etat. It was a microwave weapon. C'mon..... The world is collapsing around the characters and they sit around drinking wine and listening to music while their children roam around unsupervised. The son's teeth are falling out, so let's throw pills at the problem and see what works. The stand-off on the porch was predictable and ridiculous. The handyman would have shot them both, AND if he was a believable "prepper," he wouldn't have traded medications for paper money that is essentially worthless in their scenario. Who would see the need to bomb the city? Without food, water, and electricity the city would destroy itself. Soooo many problems and plot holes. The girl got to watch her ending? Yeah, so? If this is truly a commentary on today's society, bring on the end...

Rose states, “No one ever listens to me.” She pointed out the ship getting closer, and then she is leading the line of the family running for their lives. Furthermore, she is the first to see the cluster of deer and is dismissed when she tries to tell them about the incident. Finally, she notices the Thorn house and says that they should go there. In the end, she knows ‘no one listens to her’ and decides to embark on her own. She leads the way again, and her reward is that she sees the finale - much as she has seen the ‘finale’ (the fall of the country) all along.

@@ScoutsBoo615 I reviewed the book this week on my channel having avoided the film. Then I watched the film. I’m still in shock at how bad the film was with such promising raw material. It's more of a attack of the American myth someone is coming to save you. Doesn't matter if it the cop's, the next president, the military, you name it noone is coming to save you when things go horrible wrong. When death is seconds away the cop's, the EMS or the military are minutes away. Technology has even made things worse because as a kid in the late 80s/90s if you broke down you were actually on your own with no cellphones to call anyone, no internet to tell you what to do. People today live in a reality bubble that will pop hard the minute something goes wrong

To me the ending was so obvious. The women stopped and looked right at the house saying that they're going to check in there for her daughter. You could also hear them yelling for her outside the house before she went into the bunker. It's very quiet, but she stopped because she heard it. And the men said they had to find the bunker immediately, so they were clearly on their way to that house. I noticed the most that Rose noticed the boat , animals first and wanted to go to the house way before the family. Her brother and parents also seemed to brush her off. She tells her brother that no one cares what she thinks and he agrees. Finally she tells the story of the man that died and was upset at God, but God sent help. She said she was tired of waiting and left on her own. She noticed all the signs and didn't want to end up like the dude in her story. I thought that was part of the moral of the story.

As a huge apocalyptic fiction reader (begging for a One Second After series), this movie was right up my alley and is what really scares me about society. We don’t need to be invaded. Take down a few systems and we’ll destroy ourselves. It wasn’t perfect, but they got the point across in subtle and not so subtle ways. Many aspects of the film have happened already on a much smaller scale. I encourage anyone that doesn’t “get it” to do some introspection. …puts tinfoil hat back in closet…

For me, the movie reminds me of how much we rely on technology. Without it, ships and planes crashing, computers going haywire, instant communications disabled with no cell phone, TV, radio, or internet services, being lost without GPS services, etc. It will be survival of the fittest, prepared for unthinkable events. I think we rely too heavily on technology in this day and age.

Radio would still work. People can communicate across continents with radios. Satellite radio like in that car wouldn’t work if the satellite wasn’t working. But a normal analog radio would be fine. And normal citizens do have radios that can do things like that. It’s a whole hobby for some people. It absolutely would allow for people to speak to one another and allow for the government to communicate with the population. Any car more than about 15 years old would generally be unaffected. Lots of home stereos would be umunpacted. Old televisions would still work. The movie is bad science fiction dressed up to seem realistic. The lack of communication is nonsense. The nuclear strike is nonsense. The kid’s teeth falling out is nonsense. The deer are obviously nonsense. I haven’t thought about what people would do that would impact “migration patterns” like that, but I think that was all nonsense and at best a red herring. The plan they showed with the passenger planes was nonsense. The flyers were nonsense.
@MixedCompany2020
@MixedCompany2020 6 месяцев назад
@zero11010 I appreciate your comment and respect your opinion but would have to disagree on some things. Even though they are still useful, not all, but most people are phasing out or have already phased out antennas on their stereos, tv's and cars. (I do not think Teslas have AM/FM capability and that could be a trend with other car manufacturers.) Satellite and internet streaming have mostly taken over now. The point is that crucial information would be slow and a mass if people would be left out if our current communication technology were disabled. Plus, the current and ongoing advancements in A.I. could make the world a more dangerous and very scary place in the near future. A lot of our infrastructure could be disabled by foreign adversaries. But... that's just my opinion.
@beardysam2052

Sure without technology things change, but the twist of this film is that it’s not about weird lonely preppers, it’s about groups of people who trust and support one another and succeed. Most apocalyptic shows are written by cynical hyperindividuals as a libertarian fantasy but this film is a lot more reasonable about the benefits of allies.

@@MixedCompany2020 I hear you. And I like the way you disagree! Tesla sold 300,000 cars in 2020. That is out of 14.5 million units. That’s 2% of cars sold that year. The VAST majority of cars on the road are not Tesla and this is pretty much the ONLY company doing this. The VAST majority of cars on the road are not new. The average car is 12.5 years old (284 million cars … half of them would have these radios). The average US salary is 58k and the average new car price is 48k. The average person isn’t buying a brand new car. For example virtually all dealerships sell both new and used cars. There are lots of dealerships that only sell used cars. And, people sell their own used cars. Go to an intersection. Look for cars with a long radio antenna. Newer digital style antenna look like a little fin on the roof rather than the longer old school style. Is it half the cars that still have those? I imagine it depends on where you are. Plus … any radio with an antenna. You know not everyone is young, right? 17% of the US population is over the age of 65. Contact 5 people you know over the age of 65. Ask them if they have any way to listen to the AM radio … I would bet you money they have classic cars, and/or old stereo equipment, and/or emergency radios, old portable radios. Personally … the only thing in this category I have would be an emergency radio. These are commonly sold … for communication in emergencies. It’s one way. I can only listen. But, I do have a friend nearby who actually has a lot of radio equipment to listen to people from around the world. Go ahead and google emergency radios. Most retailers that sell outdoor equipment will sell them. This really isn’t rare. If my emergency radio stopped working (battery, solar, and hand crank are options), I would go to a neighbor. I’m guessing virtually every home in my neighborhood with people over the age of 60 would have this kind of thing. Just looked out my window … I see 6 cars that are more than 15 years old and would have these radios. If that didn’t work I would look for ANY emergency vehicle. If that didn’t work I would look for any big rig style truck. They use CB radios for their daily communication.

I believe that another way to think about the use of the color blue in relation to safety is that blue light is often emitted from media screens, our phones and TV's, which we often find comfort in on a daily basis. The whole premise of the movie was that we lose connection to those devices, or our outlets of comfort. The entire movie Rose was trying to get back to her media comfort and was able to find it in the end. It can be a metaphor how we have lost touch with the natural world and only find comfort in our devices. It's even interesting to see how Rose was happy watching Friends, while the whole country is in chaos--Screens over reality.

(Spoilers below) Three things I noticed that I haven't heard anyone talk about yet. 1. When the Jenga toy block building that they are playing in the house falls in the beginning it is reminiscent of the 9/11 twin towers falling due to a terrorist attack which is heavily implied to also be a cyber terrorist attack in this film. 2. GH's daughter says that the other girl "keeps staring into the woods like Donnie Darko.” And there is a prior shot of the same clock that looks like a frowny sad face that is the exact same clock (type) that was used in the movie Donnie Darko. It was in Donnie Darko's living room I believe. 2. In the scene where New York is burning and the missiles are going off, the two characters stand in disbelief and grab each others hands as they silently watch the buildings fall. Sound familiar to anyone? Should "Where is my mind" by Pixies be playing during this scene? Because that's straight up Fight Club. And sure enough in one of the final shots in the film as the camera is zooming in on the wall that has the DVD collection, what movie do you see that stands out the most? Fight Club! Which was also a movie that was about how to take down and reset America (or a society) which is basically what this movie is also about but just in a different context.

The Ending of the movie for me was showcasing real life today. How people have become obsess with fictional characters. Rose did not care when bit about her family all. only cared about Rachel and Rose. The whole movie is about people really do not care about each other or have any trust.
@writenowmimi
@writenowmimi 6 месяцев назад
The character, Rose's, fixation on the show, Friends, to me, is indicative of how humans focus on things with no substance that do not serve us in any way. We are conditioned, brainwashed, and bamboozled and are completely blind to the fact that while we are focused on bullcrap, we should be preparing. Kevin Bacon's character is indicative of the prepared vs. the unprepared! When the time comes, and IT WILL, those who have prepared will certainly have to protect themselves from those who have not! The character, Clay, states the most reviting lines in the entire movie, " ...I have no idea what I am supposed to do right now. I can barely do anything without my cellphone and my GPS. I am a useless man...." Humans are extremely codependent on devices/technology. Who has an actual paper map these days? Can anyone name at least 5 people who have a bunker with stocked food, supplies, amo, medicine, etc! During the trial run that they pulled on us with that lockdown, there was a lack of food and supplies, and it seems to have taught us NOTHING! We were so focused on "getting back to normal" that we missed the whole point!! We came out of it, adjusted to the new normal, and are as screwed as we were before the PLANdemic. When I try to talk to my family about preparing, they are only focused on the distractions that the elite have set before us, sports, clothes, sneakers, cars, rappers, so-called stars and all of that bullcrap!! So, I'm doing it alone! It's difficult, but I'm doing it!! The message to me was PREPARE before it's too late!! Btw, I believe they all made it to the bunker.

A lot of people seem to hate the ending, but I don’t think it’s terrible and it actually makes complete sense; the girl has her own perspective shown throughout the film, just like the mom and dad, while the Son is not as integral and shares a lot of time with the dad. It’s only fitting where it ended, as the movie isn’t about WHAT is going on and causing the “world to end” but HOW people act and treat each other. The movie starts off with Julia Roberts saying she hates people. Idk, I thought it was good. Just seems like people want things spoonfed rather than have to think about what they saw and come to their own conclusions.

There are still a good amount of details/plot lines that are unanswered. This movie seem like a movie where nothing is included for the sake of it, which is why some of these unanswered questions are driving me mad lol. Everything seems very intensional, especially after learning about some of the deeper meanings/ references included in this film. 1. Why was Amanda in such a rush to get out the city at the start of the film? She booked the rental home and began packing whilst everyone was still asleep and unaware they were going on a trip. Also conveniently on the day of the blackout? 2. Why did two planes crash in the exact same spot? Weird, no? 3. Why did all the news notifications on Amanda’s phone completely disappear? 4. What was up with the human imprint in the leaves in the shed? Ik the son made up the story to scare his sister but it made the viewer expect something to come of this story (as it does look like someone has been sleeping there) or for something to happen later in the film but it never does. 5. Why were the kids “unfazed” after the ship crashes on the beach? Amanda mentions this to Clay which implies there could be a deeper meaning to this but again, nothing is mentioned in the film. 6. Kinda ties into the fifth point but why doesn’t no one talk about what happens when they’re separated? When G.H sees the planes, he only plans on telling Amanda and no one else. The kids don’t talk about finding the shed. Clay doesn’t mention the woman he saw in the street until much later on in the film. Found it weird that they where all keeping things to themselves. There’s probably more that I haven’t mentioned but this is the list I have from memory

I've posted this in 3 other videos breaking down this movie. I thought I may as well post it here as well... I haven't seen anyone connect the dots with the girl's story about the man who believed in God. The end of that story is, "I sent a message, I sent a boat and I sent a plane (all things that happened in the movie). What more did you want?" Only the youngest, most innocent character in the movie (who was largely ignored by everyone else) was saying that it was all a message. She alone felt drawn to the fully stocked bunker--a place of refuge and plenty. The last words of the movie are, "I'll be there for you". To those who say she is selfish are missing out on the point that all of the other people in the movie were ignoring her. She tried to tell them they were being given a message but nobody even cared to ask what she thought. Many accuse her of abandoning her family when it her family that abandoned her. And it doesn't take a leap of imagination to believe after watching the last episode of Freinds that she doesn't pedal her bike back ro the others and lead them to the bunker. After all--Danny had told them it was there as well. She was just the first of them to find it.

We are so inundated with advertising on all media platforms that when someone actually comes to your door, it feels like an invasion. I've always thought that if I really wanted a product, I would go purchase it. I don't need to be hyper aware of what is out there, especially if it involves coming to my door.

That was because there was an explosion at one of the power plants all the way in Brooklyn. People forget that Hamas literally started the attack when they invaded an Israel musical festival full of thousands of people. They came in on gliders, attendees thinking it was all part of the show. Until they opened fire and gunned down hundreds of innocents. That’s when Israel had enough and decided to fight back. Also blame Hamas for putting their military compound underneath a hospital full of civilians. Really dumb on their part. They purposefully set up a base there thinking ain’t no way Israel will attack a hospital full of innocents. How wrong they were. And then they use their own people as meat shields. “White Lion” was an English ship (carrying a Dutch marque: NY was a Dutch colony btw). It landed in 1619 at Point Comfort, Va, now Hampton VA. The film takes place in The Hamptons, NY. The town in the movie is also Point Comfort. On the drive to the house, the other location on the highway sign was Fort Mose Road, referring to Fort Mose in St Augustine, Florida. It was established by Spain as the first legally recognized settlement for free blacks escaping plantations in the English colonies of Georgia and South Carolina. To me it read as a kind of foreshadowing and counterpoint of the racial subtext.

In a simple way, I saw the deer as wanting food, when humans feed wild animals how they tell each-other and the next day tons show up. I think maybe someone had been feeding them so when they saw people they were all like “ooooo treats!” But also a nod to the animals seeing us as help. There is no way they knew things were happening. However when the bombs started dropping, that seems like thats when they were spooked, while Amanda and Ruth were in the cabin. Just thoughts. I loved the film. And i really don’t get some of the hate it’s getting. But maybe people wanted Aliens. Lol. I kinda did too but loved the result. The end to me was hope. I could give you a very long list. Just look for my comments. I thought it was terrible. The ending was actually one of the best parts. It was smart and to the point. It was the rest of the movie chock full of pretentiousness, red herrings, and especially the terrible plot devices that I hated. I didn't want aliens. In fact I thought this was going to be some kind of kidnapping/escape type movie. I had no clue what it was about and at first I thought maybe Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon had something going on because of the knowing look between them that ended up being a deceptive misdirection much like the father and daughter being soooo suspicious and then wagging a finger at us for thinking the black people are suspicious. They were ACTING suspicious. And the young people were walking stereotypes. And the teeth falling out was just stupid, but not as stupid as the whole "I NEED MEDICINE FOR MY BOY" trope and the miraculous blue pill that we're supposed to think will save him I guess? I don't know. That was left to interpretation which was fine since it was one of the rare instances that we weren't slapped in the face with obvious metaphors.
