It’s interesting your opinion. Thank you for this type of videos, this help me a lot to keep focus and don’t get distracted by those technologies that I can’t use right now. Also, this help me to have a better target. Btw, when is the next video tutorial of unreal engine with c++? Really waiting the next episode 🙌🏻 I like how you organize your thoughts and content. I never used unreal, i want to use it.

Thanks so much for the comment. I'm happy this video is helping to focus on what matters. I need to rerecord the c++ videos so hopefully I should have something posted next week or the week after (just realized the holidays are around the corner)

similar to nanite feature will come to unity, it is made by singler person 'chris kahler' , you can search his videos. he is asking some funding to work full time for full year. if you are financially stable you can help him. the feature seems very promising

I really wished I saw a video like this before jumping to Unreal. I spent 6 months trying to do things in C++ and getting nowhere and when UE5 was released it ran poorly on my PC. However I must say that this experience made me appreciate Unity a lot more when I came back :D. Subscribed, thanks for the valuable and unbiased information

In fact this is in + for Unity. UE are limited to certain genres of games and if you trying to do anything different it becames fighting against engine.

I agree. If you want to push out a game with little resistance, Unity is the way to go. Easy to use and push out a quick game for inde game devs. But, that is not my case, I usually use Unity for High quality renderings and short animations. I do make games too, but most of my work comes from the earlier. So, having the ability to have tons of hi-poly assets without decreasing performance is really tempting to switch. Plus, it has a better global illum system. But, I have spent too much time and money in Unity to switch right now. Unless they have (which I don't know if they do) an asset like GameCreator then I can't switch yet anyways...

I sticking with unity mostly because of its flexibility and ability to write custom shaders in hlsl. Ue4 its limited in this area and their c++ api its a pain to work with with poor documentation. Ofc i can work with BP but i do not like node based programming. I played around a little bit in UE5 and with proper shaders we can replicate this inside Unity using custom postprocessing shader but its requires a little more work to implement this right.

Unity is a great engine, I think the most important thing is to finish and release a project instead of focusing on the game engine. To be honest, I've tried Unity giving it a honest go and it's great, I'm very biased towards UE4 but for my game idea I honestly might just use unity because it's better suited for my needs

I worked on unity since I was 11 years old, unity had limited features, no UI tools, no mecanim, and graphics compared to the udk at that time unity was nothing but since unity 5 was released. I was amazed about how fast unity is getting more powerful, many times I had thoughts about leaving unity and switching to the unreal engine, but after I saw how unity community is large and how the asset store is very active and unity is getting more effective day after day I didn't regret my decision to stay on unity at all, from my perspective, in the next few years unity will destroy the unreal engine.

Developed a game for 5 years, 8 hours long, 2.5D RPG 100% finished, coming in June (starting marketing it in January), and at first I was kind of bummed out about how my target audience is Gen Z, since I was 14 when I was inspired by games, and I'm afraid of Gen Zers being convinced by these large companies to just buy their photo realism...but then I realize, Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, all of these are gonna have a ways to go before photo-realism, the Switch in particular's average age I believe I read was somewhere in between 20-25, while the average age for Xbox is 35, and Playstation 5 is probably somewhere around there as well. Also, I have something that's brighter and Xbox, Playstation seem to market darker products, with the exception recently of Ratchet and Clank recently. Still, I'd like to develop tools in the future for indie developers to be able to have a place to make actual money and not become these free bargain bin games, I really can't stand the culture of people working for no money and think that game jam culture attitude while good for connections, also can hurt the self esteem of creators. In my opinion, no one that has finished a video game should charge $0, in fact free to play should have never existed, everything should cost some amount of money. The problem is indie developers become socialistic and community driven and start giving out their labor for free, well the large corporate companies, Valve, Activision-Blizzard, Microsoft, EA, etc... are utter capitalists and they're right now up in towers living in an echo chamber working STRICTLY for money. That's not good because all the innovation for the next generation, the next Final Fantasy's need to be created by INDIE developers, so it's high time indie developers stop thinking in making these tiny little shorts, dreaming bigger and making premium games. And, indie developers could maybe even win in one way. Indie developers just promise that there's never any DLC and no microtransactions. In any case I kind of digressed from my point originally, which is that thankfully there will be platforms for indie developers for years to come, but we absolutely MUST be wary here of falling into a bargain bin box. Make premium, well debugged, good games, and win in GAMEPLAY, not in graphics. The point you made about the M1 laptop is something that I had just never thought of before, so it's Switch, Apple ARM chips, iOS, Android, and Steam Deck. Also, remember you can have localized for possibly cheap your games for developing countries like Brazil, possibly even Korea...we have to learn how to compete with free to play games though.

Thanks for the comments. I will say this, there is a market for photo realistic games and there is a market for stylized on every platform. I'm older (35+) and have played games all my life. Back when I started games were for kids now games are for everyone at every age. So I will say, the number one thing that matters is gameplay and then I would say nice clean graphics not photorealistic just games that are very well done. So I wouldn't focus on what you think gen z wants because there is a market for all types of games now, and it's only growing What's the name of your game btww
@astrahcat1212
@astrahcat1212 2 года назад
@@EnovairStudios Thanks for reply. Well, I'm 33 now, but what I'm creating is very niche and is for school kids as it's a school story, coming of age kind of thing. As I experienced it, the best games that meant the most to me weren't the sociable ones but instead I liked all the JRPGs of the SNES and PS1 era, and I would for example play FF6-9 alone as a personal experience that connected with my own psyche so to speak. As for my game, you can find it right now on the Steam store but I haven't started marketing it yet, it's called Astralojia: Season 1. I had to hire a company to translate it into Japanese as my target audience is 'students 13-25 years old who are attending college, like anime and read shounen jump manga'. In Japan, 17 of the top 20 games for 2020 were brighter so to speak, while in America probably 18 of the top 20 games were darker games. The west appeals to a more adult market while the east appeals to a younger audience, as far as I've researched. Just from some recent market research, I think that today it's not so much about who you're getting it to, as it's paying attention to who you don't want to get it to. A coming of age school anime story isn't going to appeal to middle aged men, you could get very negative reviews from one source and get positive reviews from those who appreciate your work. The goal of marketing I think in it's purest form is to get your products as much as possible only to the ones who its for. The mega corporation mindset is to get it to every last living person on the planet and have it appeal to everyone, and so it ends up stale, usually anxiety ridden unfortunately, usually superficial, but it sure does make a ton of money.

Very true, but I would also add to this the importance of knowing and feel the new technology, so even if you don`t need it, I would strongly advice to just try out, UE is free anyway, and if you have a mid high PC, there is nothing holding you back. Knowledge only adds to your creativity.

while i totally agree to what you said, I kept coming back to these watch these videos cuz the unreal graphics just looks so damn good. So I tried switching to Unreal in May, for a month. And yes.. everything looks beautiful... but the development time went sooo slow. If you are not using blueprint, C++ compile time is slow with normal computer...well.. at least my computer can't handle it.... sad. And there is a huge learning curve compare to unity...cuz unreal is pack with stuff out of the box.... so you can expect the loading takes a long time every time you start the Unreal Engine using a moderate computer. So then i switch back to unity.... but all in all, i think its still a good idea to get an Unreal Engine Account, cuz they are giving out free assets every month. Who knows what Unreal Engine would be like in the next 5 years or so. Or maybe 5 years later moderate computer can handle tough loading(?).
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
Hey thanks for commenting. Unity is really a great engine. For Unreal the way it's designed is to first do everything in blueprints and then use c++ to optimize, that way you reduce the amount of times you need to compile. That said, I know you can get amazing graphics with Unity. I actually tried out unity and was surprised just how fast I was able to pick it up especially because I already know most C based languages. I'm most likely going to stick with Unreal on my PC just because I've used it the longest but who know, maybe I'll switch back Unity

But Lumen can save a ton of time because you don't have to go through the tedious process of setting up and baking lights, especially for an open world game. Or why do you think otherwise?
@BrunodeSouzaLino
@BrunodeSouzaLino 2 года назад
My test of UE lasted until I created a sample project with Paper2D. Almost 30 minutes to create a project and the engine along with Visual Studio 2022 use almost 3.5 GB to just sit there idling. That's gotta be the most expensive engine out there.
@EnovairStudios

@@EnovairStudios Those two engines are not really meant for 2D games.
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
I've seen amazing 2D games out of Unity, so I wouldn't say that. Unity gives you a blank canvas that you extend to make any type of game you want. Unreal can give you a blank canvas to create an amazing 3D game. It's up to the tool master not the tool.
@BrunodeSouzaLino
@BrunodeSouzaLino 2 года назад
@@EnovairStudios Regardless of that, both engines are not true 2d engines. You're essentially doing a 3D game using 2d textures with the depth axis locked.
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
Honestly, that doesn't matter at all, and there are advantages to that approach. End of the day when the game is created the player only see a 2D game. The player doesn't care how it's created only that it's good. So it's better to focus on what matters which is a good finished game instead of what engine is used to create it, because as long as it's finished, no one really cares

Lumen does not require a high-end machine, trust me, it runs well on my laptop and nanite is literally for performance, so again, a high-end machine is not required, people do not realize exactly what is going on with UE5. You DO need UE5 to achieve the best graphics you can get now even if you are a solo dev and for free xD, i'm a unity user, but UE is pretty sexy right now xD
