After almost a week at a marina (one of our longest marina stays yet) for the AGLCA Spring Rendezvous, it is time to go! Unfortunately, there is a week of gale-force winds on and off including 5-6 footers at the entrance of the Chesapeake... not our ideal cruising weather. This means it's time for us to find a protected anchorage, drop the hook, and wait it out. Follow along as we try to find this across the James River from Norfolk to Hampton Virginia!

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.

Dock crew could have kept stern in with aft line until you powered out. Perfect is not necessary: no damage or drama is a good result.

Re anchoring, a suggestion: it seems you dropped a lot of chain (80'?) after the anchor hit bottom, only backing down after that. This approach will frequently result in a pile of chain on top of the anchor, sometimes tangling the anchor/chain and making a good set less reliable. Try lowering your anchor to the bottom and, as soon as it hits bottom, back off downwind while lowering the chain. Anchor will orient to your pull and be much more likely to set first time. Good luck!

Definitely a good tip! We do this, however, it may not have been clear in the video. The (most likely) reason why the anchor did not set originally was because there is a lot of soft mud in the Chesapeake. Its a good idea to let the anchor dig in a bit before backing down, which is what we did the second time 😁 Considering it held in a 5 day gale, it all worked out!

Due to the weather and having to anchor for about a week....you should leisurely do your boat projects/cleaning without any stress. It's a good time to watch some movies....get more popcorn and whatever you like to drink. Take it easy for a week. :-)

Nothing is ever perfect on a boat. It's never clean enough, there are always things to fix, weather is rarely perfect, and docking or leaving the dock. You didn't hit the dock , so it was good. 👍 Keep the great videos comin!

As I have said before, I love all the ships in the docking area! So cool! Jenn, I thought you did a great job leaving your spot! There are so many factors involved. Be kind to yourself…you seemed really calm. You both seem very level headed and calm and compliment each other so well! I’m glad you got to your next spot and I hope you were not affected too much by the big storm at your dingy dock. Stay safe!

I agree Jen, you are way too hard on yourself. Perfect should not be a term used in boating or docking. You did a fine job and good communication throughout. You both are doing everything correct, better than most. Caution is good, nervous can cause issues. You should be confident now that your plan for docking/undocking is working. Don't be afraid of practice. The more you do it the better you get at it. start looking forward to it, you will do well. I saw a looper that had bluetooth wireless headsets to communicate while docking/anchoring, etc. They had great communication without yelling, leaning out window, etc. Anyway great video glad you enjoyed rendezvous. Good call guy’s,always wait out the weather. It’s like every day is Saturday. Jen you are getting better every day at the docks. As they say practice makes perfect. I’m sure Elliot’s pretty nibble,if you need a little nudge here and there he’ll have your back,so keep practicing. We really want to see you become all you can be. You know you have the stuff to do it. Lay back and enjoy your downtime. Thanks for the update.

We didn't end up filming too much of the anchorage but it had everything you could want besides being scenic. We held throughout decent North fetch with 30 kt sustained winds. The dinghy ride to shore was super short and easy, and even the harbormaster of the municipal marina was super kind and let us use the showers!! On top of all that, there was a brewery at the municipal marina - it didn't get much better than that.

Your open bow roller looks like it makes for easy "snubbering," and that hook on the Samson Post makes for convenient short term protection of the windlass. Doesn't seem like you guys have done an anchoring video lately? Looking forward to it if one is in the cards. Thanks!

Absolutely! We haven't ever done an anchoring specific video (although we include bits and bobs each time we anchor). Will have to do that sometime soon!

We do not, we don't have enough hours / days yet since this is our first ever boat 😁 After the loop we plan to test for one!

@@SchoandJo Excellent. You aren't required to have a Captain's license, unless you drive a boat for hire. Either to deliver boats, or have paying passengers. A certified Captain, can sign your certificate off. If you demonstrate to them that you have sufficient knowledge and skills. Without taking the course. In the meantime, log all of your hours underway in your Captain's Log Book. The best of luck to you.
