Same, started taking social justice activism and politics very seriously post-Hare Krishna. I try to not feel disheartened about way too many years in KC and instead look back at my teenage, temple-joining self with compassion - it was idealism and a drive to do "the most" good in the world that took me there. Had there not been such unfair pressure to join, it could have been a different path from the get to - directed in something tangible, other than religion, but it wasn't. Just lived in sort of delusions for..20 years?? But better late than never! Thank you for your videos & insights.

I started looking into your videos because I went on a date with a guy who spent hours shoving his beliefs down my throat to the point I thought “he’s gonna run a cult one day” and holy shit how close to the nail I was. He literally goes to the temple you grew up with in Florida. He has cognitive dissonance out the ass though because his actions to not match what comes out of his mouth

Thank you! :-) I can REALLY relate and appreciate the concept of counter factual analysis, and coming in second. I am not one to be happy because things are not worse. :-) I will be bringing up this concept to my therapist today, thanks to you :-) .............. I was certainly all set to make hundreds of millions and continue a successful childhood career which I had in a professional music school. All the adults "in the room" during my teen years ended up letting me down as they more exploited me rather than guiding and mentoring me, which is a parallel to HK. I ended up losing my initial musical mojo at 21, which lead me into the arms of the cult, which was initially a good thing and also a musical adventure............... I ended up eventually getting and doing most of what I wanted, even though I did not really go "all the way" and instead was satisfied with teaching, and society, friendship and love largely with devotees while feeling that I was connecting with God. Being in the cult cost me a small fortune due to their lies and my values got very confused................ Also my window of opportunity, like having the Pink Floyd managers in my house at 15 hanging out with me, thinking I was an adult, was only there during those few years when I was getting terrible guidance. I had no idea that in a few short years music would morph into disco as the musical counter culture ship would sail. lol Your insight and info is extremely helpful to me as I want to be happy with my life "as it is" and also how it can be.

Hi Paul, As always, thanks for watching!! Yes, unfortunately our brains are not designed to make us happy. They are designed, by evolution for survival and reproduction, which generally means it focusses on what we don't have rather than what we do have. Rober Wright's Why Buddhism is True is a good book about how the design of our brain makes us unhappy, haha. Gratitude journaling is quite helpful. There's a lot of good studies and information based on those studies on the benefits of that practice.

My friend recently shaved his head, wants to go to an ashram in New Zealand, and is has invited some Hare Krishnas to his birthday at a Hare Krishna Vegetarian Restaurant in the CBD. Even though he knows exactly what their institution is about. I am getting the sense that lot of people are spiritually bypassing. These people know about the whole Krishna Cult, but they join regardless and they ignore the red flags. Human psychology and the desire for happiness can be so irrational sometimes it baffles me.

That's why I think the philosophy stuff is more important. I didn't truly leave until I understood there was no reason to believe it was true, but understanding that requires being willing to go from believing in God to being an atheist, which many aren't willing to do. It's tough, once someone starts going down that path, the concerns of outsiders just seem to make people more committed.

@@GauraRader I kind of feel pity for him. And somewhat disgusted to the point that it makes me physically sick. Because I've read what happens to people in these institutions and the sexual abuse, drug use-age, rape, molestation, money laundering, drug trafficking that happens in these institutions and how its covered up in a veneer of positive spirituality. Its very sinister. At least with gangs and organised crime you know what you're getting, its illegal criminal activity. With these cultists, they want you to believe that they are good people doing good things and that they are self aware conscious and reflective people when in reality, they are covering up their darkest shadows and deceiving you. I mean, it should be visible from miles away, but in a religious institution, people seem to make more leeway, they seem to make more concessions and tolerate more nasty abuse under the guise of it being karmic retribution or sincere submission. People seem to have no sense of ego boundaries in these groups, they talk a lot about wanting to maintain a sense of separation from their God by being against non-dualistic Advaita Vedanta philosophy. But ironically, they seem to be acting out the philosophy which they are inherently against, instead of strong individuals they become one massive monistic blob, clones of eachother with no sense of self, holding on to a group identity.

@@MrMikkyn Honestly, there isn't systematic sexual abuse, drug use, criminal activity, etc. It is not that kind of cult. It is a cult of sincere and decent people believing bat shit crazy things because they are take books that are thousands of years old literally. That being said it does really really harm people. I'm sorry your friend got sucked into it.

@@GauraRader I’m glad you can say such nice things about it. You know what, I strangely trust your judgement, since you’ve been in it much longer than I have. I’ve met Hindus who believe in the same Gods, but they are not as crazy as some of these Hare Krishnas. And they don’t go around doing the same things. I sincerely would like to believe that the Kirtanananda days are over, hopefully, but I’m extremely suspicious. If its happened once, I wouldn’t be surprised if it will happen again. Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The decapitation of Tirthapada, Tirthapatha taking LSD in temples, illegal arms possession, Charles St Denis stabbed, shot a dozen times, beaten with a hammer, and suffocated with a plastic wrap down his throat; rape, children found dead in refrigerators, human burials, gunshot assassinations to Sulocana, kidnapping Sulocana’s children, Sri Galima performing oral sex on boys in the temple, Jayatirtha receiving oral sex from his female devotees at the London Manor. I don’t know.. this stuff sounds way too messed up for a group of people who preach celibacy. Most recently I found an audio of Devamrita Swami trying to cover up a woman’s sexual abuse instructing for her to “dissipate the clouds” and “retracting her statements” for having a “moment of weakness”. I mean this sounds so misogynistic and like a rape apologist. www.harekrsna.com/sun/editorials/02-17/devamrita.mp3

@@GauraRader The thing is. A lot of the practices in the Ancient Scriptures aren’t even done anymore. Week long yagña fire sacrifices? Those days are over. Ashwameda Horse sacrifices? Done and dusted. Sati widow burning? Done. Polygamy? Over. A lot of the stuff that happens in the Mahabharata for example are about what people should NOT do. Gandhari tries to give herself an abortion in the Mahabharata by whacking her belly with a club. Its about what NOT to do but what people inevitably end up doing in a messed up time period such as the near the end of the Dwarpa Yuga and leading into the Kali Yuga. But I don’t think anyone in ISKCON has studied or read the Mahabharata, except maybe HD Goswami, and I doubt the rest of the devotees have read a Mahabharata that has not been translated by their own sectarian disciples. If you’ve read Vedic Voices, its literally harmless. You see, in that book you have Birth Brahmins in Andhra Pradesh reciting mantras, performing yagñas and soma rituals, practicing endogamy and memorising the Vedas. Its like the most harmless thing you could ever come across, and they believe in the same Vedas as the Hare Krishnas, but they actually study and follow it. They worship Agni, collect the firewood together, build tents, get married, have children, and study the Taitorreya Upanishads via oral transmission and verbal repetition. Its like, how can people distort a religion so much that it turns from doing yagñas and soma rituals into a global cult. I have no idea.

I felt very sad leaving Iskcon at first but the abuse my son & I endured physically & mentally & being told by an elder Prabhupada devotee that he didn’t care if his parents died in a car accident because they were meat eating demons was the final straw for me. I am still a strict vegetarian but my parents eat meat & are not demons. I do believe I met you many years ago in Alachua. I am thankful for these videos . They are helping me to heal. I still visit Hindu Temples but am done with Iskcon, & I try to just stay spiritual & open minded avoiding the religious dogma knowing that no one truly knows. I love meditation & chanting. But I believe these videos are making me feel better about leaving. Thank you 🙏🏽💟🪷

Thanks for sharing a bit of your story. I'm sorry for what you went through :( That makes me so happy to hear my videos are helping you in some way. That is especially true knowing that we met at one point. Originally I knew I had to make some videos to try to make up for the fact that I had been a preacher in Iskcon. My hope was that at least the people that met me would know what I currently believe.

My neighbor is a middle-aged woman who recently joined HK in a different city. Sometimes she is home and sometimes she is by the temple. Her husband does not approve. Recently, she has made attempts to convert me, given me books and sent me many links on messenger. I quoted the Bible to her, to provide her with opposing viewpoints, such as regarding avoiding idols and astrology, at which point the conversation was-over. I just wonder if there is any way I can be helpful, at all.

Thanks for watching some of my videos. Just for you, in the next week or so I will make a video called “what’s so bad about the Hare Krishnas?” In short, they are not bad people but the idea that you can find happiness by giving up pleasure, giving up desires, giving up ones identity(ego), sure endings to a guru, and meditating and praying all day is just flat out wrong. There are many studies on what makes people happy. I suggest you read some of them instead. Also, the idea that Krishna exists is has logical support. There is literally no reason to believe that to be true. I’d be happy to talk to you sometime if you you message me.

Many things are dangerous about them like the mental syndromes that they ecasterbate, encourage and even use as recruitment tactics which include addictive behavior, OCD, death phobias, submissive syndrome, and breaks with reality like believing that statues are people.

@Marife Quijano The Yoga disclipline part is fine adn can be helpful, however all the unnecessary cult activities ar what ruins it. Cultification or radicalization is a problem with many prganizations, however Prabhupada told us directly that the movement was NOT to be a cult or even a religion and instead a philosophy. I am agraid that he lied about that. It was not a philosophy in the actual definition, and got caught up into human labor trafficking, racketeering and other illegal stuff.
