-RPM is ESPN's proprietary model that blends adjusted plus-minus with the box score
-PIPM is a hybrid model (box score and plus-minus) that "luck-adjusts" plus-minus data (regresses FT% and 3pt%) to account for noise and is more sensitive to a player's role/fit on a given team. Created by @JacobEGoldstein
-Luck-Adjusted RAPM is a pure plus-minus model adjusted for shooting luck, reducing some of the noise of single-season APM. It is most sensitive to role/fit of these three. Available at: nbashotcharts.c...

@@ThinkingBasketball My favorite guy I been following over the years was Kirk Goldsberry back when he use to work for Bill Simmons. He later got hired by the Spurs and is now hired by ESPN. ESPN is slowly trying to include more basketball analysis, but remember it is ratings based and many analysis goes over the head of the everyday fan. Its cool to know basketball on a deep level just understand not everyone can go that deep and come out on the other side "alive."

@@liams.3479 Jordan was not clearly statistically less efficient. It's debatable. Jordan has a higher PER while Lebron has a higher true shooting percentage. Lebron has more assists and is a better passer, but Jordan has less turnovers. It's close offensively, I think Lebron is genuinely better prime for prime, but Jordan's career defense is miles above Lebron. People fell too inlove with the "Lebron is bad on defense"take during the year. I totally agree with your point about his defensive lapses being circled out and taken out of context. I think you did a steller job proving that in fact, he was not terrible. The main reason for him even getting so much slack for those is simply that his name is Lebron James. I am pretty certain that if we scrutinise every player like we do Lebron, we will find clips of every superstar not giving 100% on all defensive possessions, especially if they had played 45 000+ minutes, on a second night of a back-to-back. @Samuel (Sam) Smith I see where you're coming from, but this video isn't focusing on the clips shown, but the data that ranks James as a positive on defense. Samuel (Sam) Smith no? I get it that LeBron is their leader but don’t put it all on him only. They are team, and they can still think individually. They are NBA players they can take care of themselves. Kuzma can also makes something happen. The fact that he had to push LeBron to guard HIS player without any callouts was just a bad move from his part. You just want to discredit LeBron. Not saying that he didn’t do any mistakes but you clearly can’t name a big one (in-game) without researching.

It's funny how people will still keep their same opinions on LeBron's defense without even watching your video, assuming you'll only pile up on his botched defensive poasesions. However, thanks for showing that he has at least somewhat accounted for his physical regression with age. You also don't say that he's been great, you point out flaws as well because he certainly has had many lapses but it's also been blown out of proportion. He hasn't been nearly as bad as many people want to proclaim. I think he's never been an all-time great one-on-one perimeter defender for an entire game, even in his prime, but he makes up for it immensely with his cerebral defense, being a great examiner of scouting reports and often making the correct play.
@philwilson609
@philwilson609 5 лет назад
If LeBron was showing huge drops in defensive effectiveness, one would expect that his age would also impact on his offensive output. Other than a slight drop below career averages in 3 point percentage and free throws, his production continues to be world class. The 3 point drop is probably related to taking unwise shots in a desperate effort to bail out the Lakers in poor possessions, while the poor free throw performance might be attributed to a drop in focus during discouraging games played on behalf of a lousy team. The mistake that LeBron made was jumping to the Lakers. He is still a great player who has more minutes of NBA play than any 34 year old in league history.

Instead they just take the easy route and crop film that's out of context and create fake news. This is a great idea for a series. I really enjoyed this one. I think people have developed this "lazy" narrative with Lebron's defense because he's not as dominant as he once was. He is a little lazy. Often times, he purposefully lets shorter players get by him and threatens them at the rim only. It's not the highest percentage way to defend, but he's a big picture thinker and knows this is how he can have the best overall game. So at times, he does compensate playing 'the right way' in order to conserve energy. In the end I don't know why people hate on that though. He's trying to be the best he can be, he just has a more cerebral approach than a player like Westbrook.

You can bring up all the stats you want bro. Lebron doesn't give defense the effort he used to give. I would watch him and it would seem like he wasn't giving the effort he could be. Lebron never takes the toughest assignments anymore either. He might spend a handfull of possessions defending the opposing best player these days. It is frustrating watching the so called best player leave people wide open. Or call for switches when its completely unnecessary. Causing the whole teams defense to collapse and leading to easy buckets. Ive been seeing him do things like this more and more for years now. Overall he might be a good defender still. This video kinda gave me perspective as to why he might be doing that. It could be scouting. He might have a specific role or assignment. Or there might be a different concept they're adhering to. Lebron over the years has sacrificed a little defense to maintain (or raise) his level on offense, he is not a bad defender, he is simply not spending energy on defense so sometimes it can be a disadvantage. At this age he has already converted full-time to be a general on the court, his good deeds are given by intelligence, anticipation and also continues to have the incredible ability to block shots. I think from now on we will only see perimeter defense When the team needs him in the play-off, like when he had to defend harden.

Genuinly curious how his defense stacks up against the other superstars in the league, namely: Durant, Harden, Giannis, Leonard, and Embiid.

I'm no analyst, but as someone who watches a lot of games, i'd say out of the bunch you mentioned, Giannis is in league of his own, top 10 in both perimeter and rim defense, then come Kawhi and Embiid, top 5 in perimeter/interior defense, respectively but not quite as versatile, and his defense is probably very slightly worse than Durant's and on par with James Harden's. That's not a bad thing whatsoever, as Harden has been average perimeter defender and actually great post defender for a guard.

Dude you can't just clip in the handful of times he played what could be misconstrued as defence and act like he was fine on defence all year. The lakers defense efficiency was much better when he was out. You also cherry picked plays and tried to explain "give excuses" for his defensive short comings. There are many examples over the last 3-4 seasons to dispute your excuse making video. Not only he would miss the defensive assignment but blame his teammares for it. You must be a millenial judging by your ability to cone up with excuses. Saving fuel on defense to have more on offense 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Jordan didn't save himself by taking plays off. That is the standard Lebron asked to be measured by when he claimed to be the GOAT.
@Justin-jj8cw
@Justin-jj8cw 5 лет назад
The Truth I think this is the problem with (and I’m taking a guess judging by your millennial comment) most of you older nba viewers. Lebron is NOT Jordan. Lebron James is Lebron James and until you realize that’s who he is, you’ll never be able to accept him as a player. So many people try and compare him to other greats but he truly is in his own lane.
@TheTruth-dm8wd
@TheTruth-dm8wd 5 лет назад
@@Justin-jj8cw His goal is to be the GOAT (and according to him, he already is) so as a consequence he will be compared to those that are at the top. He called himself the King so he will be judge accordingly. He wants the attention so he is getting it... We know he is not Jordan, the comparison is to determine who is a better basketball player. I don't think most are saying he is or not Jordan. The assertion is that he is NOT better than Jordan. But hey, it was very inspiring what you said 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Justin-jj8cw
@Justin-jj8cw 5 лет назад
The Truth bruh you gotta be tweaking because I’ve heard many sports analysts that argue Lebron isn’t better than MJ say “he’ll never be MJ”. I think that until we redefine what greatness means in terms of basketball, we will never see a new “goat”. The reason being because nut ass niggas like yourself will always find something to compare to MJ. I think it’s hilarious because lebron already knows this and shows no interest in these petty debates like we’re getting into. But hey, Lebron the goat and unless MJ wants to come back to the league and prove otherwise😂

I appreciate you making this video to show that LeBron isn't a slouch on defensive, and i definitely agree. BUT having said all of that...so much more has to go into this. There's a reason why LeBron hasn't made an all-defensive team since his Miami years. And being a top 10-5 player all-time means the standards are higher. Self-proclaiming himself the goat means the standards are higher and has to live with that. I don't want to see average to "good" defensive from him because that's not the standard he (and his fans) have set for him. In conclusion I agree with your video, but that doesn't mean it's ok, especially for the type of talent he is.

Edgar Gordillo Considering his age, it’s perfectly acceptable. Nobody maintains that level of play through a usage rating that is that high while also dealing with injuries throughout the season. Just look at Peyton Manning as age caught up to him. He became COMPLETE and utter trash as his body couldn’t handle it anymore. He went along for the ride using his brain his last year, and had to trust everyone else to pick up the physical aspect of the game as he was unable to do so anymore. Big Ben has also begun to lose some of his ability as age has caught up to him leading to higher INT totals. Drew Brees who was known for the deep throws is now gradually declining in deep efficiency and losing arm strength. Nobody remains at peak physical condition as they age. You have to compromise and make sacrifices in order to save your all for when it’s necessary. You are a retard to think otherwise
@solomongrundy1616
@solomongrundy1616 5 лет назад
Impervius Let’s keep it consistent with basketball and what LeBron’s personal standards are. He called himself the goat which means that’s the standard we should hold him up to. Past greats have sacrificed their individual numbers for the betterment of their team and became students of the game. Jordan could’ve easily averaged 35-8-8 into the 90’s but sacrificed that to win and to play defense. LeBron should start looking to do that instead trying to force 27-8-8 every night. And playing off ball would also help him but we all know what happens to LeBron when he’s forced to play off-ball (ahem 2011)
@solomongrundy1616
@solomongrundy1616 5 лет назад
Impervius Again let’s stick to basketball because Manning doesn’t have to play defense. In basketball you play both ends of the floor. And nice job ignoring the point I brought up about him not sacrificing anything. IF he really wanted to perform at a high level on both ends of the floor (because he still can, he’s not 40.) He would pound the ball less, play more off ball and go to the post. He wants to run and gun with all the young players and that’s not going to work anymore. Age is a factor but you change your game around that. LeBron will keep dominating the ball until he’s 38 and people will wonder why he’s so tired.
@impervius8690
@impervius8690 5 лет назад
Edgar Gordillo No let’s not stick to basketball. There’s a reason I mentioned them. QB’s have a lower level of usage than Lebron. He more than doubled and tripled the amount of time a QB spends on the field. Now simple logic says, Peyton and Brees have declined/are declining physically despite less usage. Therefore, Lebron with more than double their usage should suffer more of an effect from deterioration than them. Common sense. Now you mention lebron’s play style. Cool. Except there’s nobody on offense that can carry the load and let him play off ball more. So what do you do when you don’t have anyone who can be aggressive except an aging and deteriorating player? You have that aging player pick and choose when he does both. Because he has to as there is no other option since nobody else can consistently do it. Common sense. Age is a factor. So is a poor/average roster. Lebron did it ALL in Cleveland when he was young. Now he has practically the same team. But he’s not young. Lebron has to keep doing it all, but physically that is impossible. And then there’s retards like you who think he needs to pick one and lean to it when that is schematically not the best option and blame him for picking and choosing when that is schematically the best option.
@solomongrundy1616
@solomongrundy1616 5 лет назад
Impervius Oh please even when Rondo and Ball were healthy; who are both good playmakers, LeBron was pounding the rock. Wanna know someone else who had a high usage rating and had to struggle with injuries MJ at the exact same age. Pippen missed 50+ games due to surgery and Rodman was not good enough to start. Still got the job done on both ends of the floor. Kobe is another good example, among other all-time greats. Stop giving this guy a pass for straight sagging off on simple defensive assignments. You gonna tell me from the last 3-4 years LeBron was “so old” he couldn’t consistently play defense anymore? Gimme a brrak
@loveofchristjesusholinessc8584
Lebron to me is still on his prime. Yes this season 2019 was a lil rocky but he knows what hes doing. He's the best player in the world. Next season he's gonna be on a rampage. Book it!
