Larry 'Legend' and Magic Johnson revived the NBA when it was really hurting. Two phenomenal players who were arch-rivals but had the ultimate respect for each other and eventually became good friends. Magic proclaims that Bird was the GOAT. That is incredible praise coming from a player of the skill level of Magic who himself is a legend. Basketball was a very different game back than compared to today. But if you read up and watch the many RU-vid videos about Larry, you will see that his coaches, colleagues, as well as his competitors and rivals, will all say that he was the smartest guy to ever play the game. He played basketball with his intellect, and treated every game like it was a well thought out chess match. Larry was good for the sport and in my humble opinion he is the GOAT...!

Cedric Maxwell got the other FMVP. Bird should have won, but his 15 ppg in the series was enough for the media to vote against him since he had a stretch of rough interviews late that season

Bird, Magic, and Jordon are my three favorite players of all time. They each have different reasons why I rank them so highly. Allow me to explain. I want to say something and I hope that my heart is seen in doing so. Larry and Magic didn't just save the NBA. They helped save America's soul. Allow me to explain. Racism had been a part of Our Country so long that even after all of the Civil Rights legislation got passed we still didn't know how to let go of the mutual distrust between the Black and White communities. Larry Bird grew up playing basketball with a group of Black men who worked at a nearby hotel. Larry would never learn that mutual distrust that plagued Our Country. After Larry's father committed suicide, Larry poured everything he was into basketball. His father struggled with a mental illness and he eventually lost that battle, but Larry watched his father fight through his illness to support his family. Even though his father would lose his battle, Larry learned toughness from his father, and through that he learned how to have great compassion and recognize the beauty of the human spirit when it refuses to submit to the pain of the individual struggle we all go through in our own way. Larry recognized the toughness of Magic. He respected the man he was. He probably envied Magic's ease with the press. Magic for his part welcomed everyone. He loved to see people smile so Magic always wore one. He loved people. Especially children. His charitable works with children charities is well known. However, that just scratches the surface and doing a bit of research to find out who all Magic has helped is worth the time it will take to learn that story. Magic's free and open spirit could never harbor the mutual distrust Our Country couldn't seem to let loose of. Magic would come to understand and respect just how tough Larry Bird was. It was their Mid-Western upbringing that required Larry to invite Magic into his home when they shot their first commercial, and it was that upbringing that required Magic to accept. It was Larry's mom that won Magic's heart. Unless you were from Boston or LA, when Magic and Larry played you rooted for both to have a great game. You would always get the news paper to check out their numbers even if you saw the games. They were just that great. I don't think there has ever been more people, percentage wise, following the athletic exploits of two individuals so closely of any sport in US history. Through Our observance of their exploits we began to see two remarkable men who had no mutual distrust. Michael Jordon would enter into his own as Magic and Larry were getting ready to leave the arena. Michael was the perfect blend of personality between Magic and Larry, and he made us want to be like him. Wear his jersey. Wear his shoes. Wear his cologne. Dress his style. Eat his Big Mac. When Michael, Larry, and Magic played on the Dream Team the entire World watched. When we started blowing everyone out in the Olympics the television network cut away from the games because they were so "woke" they felt they should be humble Americans because no one should want to see the mean, nasty, and overpowering bullies slaughter the other nations. Yeah. I thought it was bullshit then too. For those reasons alone, Larry, Magic, and Michael will always be my three favorite players. They helped heal a long divide between Americans and gave us all real life examples of real men, with all their flaws, in their individual struggles, fight with incredible strength of spirit to do one thing better than anyone had ever done it before. IT WAS GLORIOUSLY BEAUTIFUL!!! We all loved every second of it. All of us. Together. Basketball courts were filled in every neighborhood. They were in the streets in the cities. They were in sub-urban drive ways. They were on grass and dirt out in the country. Everyone wanted to play. And we did. You need 10 people to play full court. Getting 10 people together can be difficult so most of us just started going to public gyms and courts. Civil Rights Laws made sure no one could be excluded. We had no choice but to play together. Friendships would form as we would compete and struggle for the win. Some of us were better than others, but if you gave everything you had to the struggle you could earn respect because there is beauty in the struggle of someone who gives their all. We couldn't all be like Mike, Magic, and Larry, but we could emulate them. After 9/11 fear set in. We began to distrust again. We let politicians and race baiters manipulate our fears so that we would vote for them to secure our individual interest instead of the interest of us all. In doing so we only secured our collective fall. I'm an old man now. I believe in the founding principles of Our Country. I believe in them so much I joined the military because I believe that those principles can save the world. As an old vet I can't begin to express the deep sorrow I have over what is happening in the Country I love and to her People. Sports in general has become a stage on which prominent athletes take turns condemning our Country and calling everyone they disagree with a racist and generally performing character assassinations. It's more important to be politically woke than it is to be humble and listen to those you disagree with. I don't watch sports anymore. It makes me too sad. I guess Our mutual distrust we seemed to let go of in the 80's looked lonely there on the ground so we picked it back up. I watch your videos because it reminds me of a time when there was hope in the unity we began to find. Hope can be elusive, and if you let it go you might not be able to grasp it again.

I agree with so much of what you had to say!!! I too grew up in a time where people collectively chose to NOT BE racist in the 80's. We chose to embrace ALL athletes, watch ESPN, and play team sports with everybody, regardless if you were white, brown, black, yellow, or whatever. Hard work and teamwork TRUMPS anything racist. Unfortunately, I too have shunned professional sports & ESPN wokeness the last couple of years, because I refuse to support the main stream media and professional sports associations who bow to the liberal left CREATING MORE division among us. When you only embrace one narrative, that is RACISM. The athletes feel caught, they cannot speak out of fear of losing sponsorship $$ or being cancelled.

one of the things you will find interesting about larry if you watch more of his highlights is that he did things in weird positions that made it very hard to tell what hes was actually going for when he would move, the game hadnt been analyzed to death at that point where everyone is coached to kind of know the to 2-3 things he can go for are abc so only defend against that. he had jump shots he would turn into passes, full body feints that really looked like he was trying to jump for a lay up or shot and he would run by you if you jumped. he go for lay ups and drop the ball off to a teammate when everyone jumped. so a lot of people think he faced weak defenses but even rodman who would be on people like 2 straight jackets couldnt quite figure larry out

Thoroughly enjoyed your review.. What Larry and Magic did for basketball was akin to 2-person CPR performed on a lifeless body that everyone else was just fine with stepping over. They paved the way for others to THRIVE. Also, Magic performed the only defense he could against his rival since he knew him so well. One better not commit to the fade away too soon else Larry would change and step forward into the defender. NO ONE knew this better than Magic. Better a defended 15-footer than garnering a foul and giving two free throws. If Larry got you to commit 2 fouls against him early he was going to get you to foul out before too long.

It’s nice to see you youngun’s getting educated on that specific area of NBA and the actual GOAT. Back then if all you did was score you wasn’t all that, you had to rebound, have assist and play the WHOLE game....that’s something that Lebron is weak on and will never be the GOAT. None of these LEGENDS listed below ever walked off. 1 - Bird 2- Magic 3- Jordan Shout Out from Mississippi ....👊👊👊

Kareem Abdul Jabbar wore 33 .. Idk why Bird wore 33 but several Celtics numbers had been retired due to the 11 out of 13 champions back in the day. I think maybe Bird's blue collar persona and toughness is told out of "legend". He would never back down from a fight.. There's clip with Bird scrapping against Dr. J and Bill Laimbeer.

They showed when he broke his cheekbone. It was game 5 in first round back when it was a best of 5 in the first round. He also had a concussion and double vision. Down 18 when he came back. He then had 17 pts 7 rebounds and 5 assists in the 4th quarter. Celtics won by 3. There is a reason why he is Larry Legend. There’s a reason why Pat Riley, his biggest rival’s coach, said “If I need a shot to win the game, i want Michael Jordan to take it. But if I need a shot to save my Life, I want Larry Bird taking that shot.” Let that really sink in. Seriously

I think you are thinking of 84. In 84 Maxwell told the team to climb on this back and he closed out the series, but he didn't win the FMVP in 84. Bird had a monster series with 27.4p 14.0r 3.6a 2.1s 1.1a Bird had the big final game in 1981. He closed out the series with 27p 13r 5a on 55% shooting. He basically took over the end fourth quarter after Houston made a crazy comeback and cut the lead to 3.

It’s #1 play because of the context. It was game 5 of eastern finals tied 2-2. Bird had just had ball blocked. Isiah tried to get the ball to Lambier before D was set. Bird stole and passed to DJ for the win. Now up 3-2 instead of down 2-3 with game 6 in Detroit. Pistons won game 6 and Celtics won game 7

Subscribing from Virginia. As a child of the 80s I had the mullet Bird was a hero. Love how fair you are to all the ones in talk from the GOAT. I have about 5 I consider the GOAT. Hard to single out just 1 when so many things were done from different players. Bird Magic MJ top for me . But so many I loved. Kobe Dr J .. I have heard people say Bird was the only one for us white kids to look up to. Those had it wrong. I grew up in Alabama and anyone that truly respected the game looked up to all the stars. In my hood it was red yellow black and white out there playing and talking about who we wanted to play like. My cousin went on to play for UAB Blazers could have went pro but became a preacher instead. Your Bird vids brought me here. Your fairness to everyone and your open views got me subscribed. Keep em coming !

1981 Finals MVP was for Cedric Maxwell. It was unfair cos Bird's numbers were much more impressive. Maxwell averaged 2-3 points more than Bird, but Bird averaged many more rebounds and assists. The NBA wasn't ready for a second year white guy win an MVP title. One of his top plays that is not on this list was in the 87-88 regular season, game 2 vs Washington. In that game he made 4 clutch shoots: the first one three-pointer to tie the game did not count cos KC Jones (Celtics' coach) had just called for a time out before Bird shooted; the second one was just after that time out when Bird shoot a three-pointer on one leg while a double team was defending him; the third one was to tie the first overtime and the fourth time (only 2 seconds left) was to win the second overtime.
@busterkeaton1001
@busterkeaton1001 2 года назад
Bird should have been MVP but it had zero to Bird being white. Or Bird being in his second year. Magic won MVP the year before in his first year with a big game when Kareem was out, but Kareem clearly had the better series. The NBA was completely happy rewarding a rookie especially over Kareem who had a bad relationship with the NBA writers. Bird was the much bigger star than Maxwell, casual sports fans knew who he was. Bird did not shoot well in the series, and Maxwell outscored him. The reason that Bird didn't win the FMVP is scoring is all the NBA valued back then. The all around game wasn't respected. The term triple double wasn't used back in 1981. So basically Bird's monster rebound numbers and assists were ignored. The storyline had already congealed that "Bird was having a bad series" because he really wasn't scoring well.

Top three are Jordan, Magic and Bird. Put them in whatever order you want. To me they're all no1. Jordan is Jordan and Magic and Bird is the reason the league even exists today. To me this is a bigger achievement than any other ballet can lay claim to. Also worth mentoning since this is a video about Bird. Jordan has Larry in his top 5. That should really be the end of the whole "is he or isn't he" debate. Jordan is, at least as far as statistics and analytics goes, pretty much the no1 player of all time in almost every single metric. (they do a very detailed analysis of this in the Jordan VS LeBron video) And if that guy says Larry is the best SF who ever touched a ball and one of the top 5 players of all time... How the hell has any more authority on this matter than Michael F-ing Jordan?
