Hi lienlien 😍💐 great media! The recycling of the media is a big plus for me as well. Even though sometimes a clean up can be tedious based on how much root material is attached, when pouring the clean leca into the storage containers, that is so satisfying 👍🏼 thank you so very much for watching! So appreciate your time and support 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Hey Nina! I was so thrilled to see this video - wasn't expecting it this soon. Thank you soooo very much. You put a lot of information in to this video. I have a lot to consider going forward with my orchids. The lava rock would be a lot cheaper, but .... you made a lot of good points for leca. I will no doubt be watching this video several times in order to make my best choice for each orchid. There is a lot to consider - no easy answers, ha! You are so very intuitive of your individual orchid needs and I know that is something I need to pay more attention to - the individual. Again thank you for this video it is an incredible resource.

HI!! 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🥰🥂🎄 I am so glad to hear that you were thrilled to see this video. And yes, it was pretty loaded with not much definitive 'conclusions' but I did not want to make it a 40+ minute video, so, I hope that there are some pointers which can help or, even if they didn't help at all, please let me know! If there is any doubt, based on a single case, then let me know... this video is not a one and done! All the considerations have certain reasoning behind them, and there may be a variable that is different in your environment, and we can still make it work, no matter what the season 😊ask away until there is no doubt, and we can keep this conversation going. I love geeking out over these 2 medias for orchids, so... you did me a great favor asking about this subject. Thank YOU very much! Have a wonderful day and remember... this is not a one and done! 🥰🥂🎄

You just hit the nail on the head. Having to keep an eye on the individual needs of each orchid. I never realised how important that is and I’m glad to have watched Nina’s video. It all makes so much sense. I almost feel rather stupid for thinking in the past that one medium will fit all types of orchids. How wrong was that!. Anyway, I thank you for bringing up the question in the first place.

Thank you so much for this video Nina! 💚 this is really helpful and informative! 🤗 Well, I agree with the cattleya-type orchids situation but i'll probably stick with lava rock still since they're doing better here and the luck ai have with them is so much better than leca! The Phalaenopsis seedling In my first ever birthday haul suffered from root rot after I transitioned it to leca 😂. Lost all the roots, nothinh left. I thought it was a goner but I didn't give up, I sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide weekly ill there were no signs of molds/fungus and rot transferring to the stem. Then when I felt it was safe, I put it to rest in a cup with a bed of sphagnum moss at the bottom soaked with the Hormex solution (and after a month of using it, this is indeed a miracle solution for orchids! All of my new orchids are growing roots like crazy and are really healthy right now!) it put on 2 new roots! and the new leaf that was actually growing actually grew a lot more. I am sold to and amazed by this Hormex Growth and Rooting hormone. If only that's available in your area, I'd definitely reckoned you trying it! 🎉

Hi 😍💐 thank YOU so much for taking me up on my offer and clicking / watching the video! I appreciate you and your kind feedback 🫶🏼 yes, since this video was posted, the lava rock has proven to be much more effective for many orchids, seeing as I now have the cold winters to navigate, also without supporting the orchids with the light they need... it all adds to orchids getting weak and not being able to cope with stress factors. Add to that, months, and not just a day here and there, leca can be a real problem causer. I am not surprised to hear that your phal lost all it's roots. Leca in high humidity climates has to be used with caution. It is excellent for low humidity climates, a real helper, but it can pose issues when the surface of the leca also draws water from the air. I am glad to read, though, that your seedling is recovering! It is great to have such a wonderful product on hand that can help with root growth. I do not have this product here 🥲 wishing you a wonderful rest of your Saturday, amigo! 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids Of course! More info the better! This is actually the maybe the 5th time i've watched this because all the previous times, I watched it during nights and guess what? I always fall asleep halfway and forget the infos so it's just now I was able to watch it in the morning/afternoon! 🤣 and Indeed! I agree with what you're saying! Good Thing I didn't buy too much leca and I just tested 1 bag 🤣 (and they're expensive too! like I can buy 5-7 bags of lava rocks for one small bag of an okay quality leca 🥲) With that being said, i'll wait for my phal to grow it's roots around 2-3 inches long first before I pot it up in lava rock in a tiny pot (tiny tiny one for now so that it won't be too stressed on producing roots to take over the pot and so that I can control the moisture levels)! And awwww thank you so much Nina, my friend! I wish you a wonderul week ahead too! stay safe!

HI there!! 🎄 thank you very much! I am so glad that the request was made because it is a topic that I just love to go on about 😬 I have seen small leca in bags on YT, but we do not get the separation of sizes, I am just glad that finally I can source leca locally that does not float!! 😅 which was the only stuff I could find for years, so I resorted to growing in bark back then. That leca is now in my humidity trays. Have yourself a great rest of your day... mine was not as productive as I would have liked because there were very noisy workers on the other side of the hedge, so.... I could not film anything 🤯 Oh well, got other stuff done instead so... all good, thank you!! 🤗🌸

Hi Nina! 😇🌸. Great information. Thanks for going over a lot of the variables to think through when potting or repotting I think I have a dendrobium that needs a repot as its growing roots in the air. I still can not keep them straight as to what I've planted them in. I think it through as best I can at that time then it's forgotten. I should probably keep notes but I'll probably forget that too. 🤷‍♀️🤪 Have a great day!

Number 5!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🥰🎄 Thank you very much for your positive feedback! I started with notes, many years ago... it helped, but now it's almost second nature, so, I don't take notes on what is potted up in what! I have staple media that use and manipulate to hopefully work the best for roots and water / nutrient uptake. Attempting to reduce all the different media available has made my life much easier, more economical and I am less confused now than I was a few years ago. If you ever have any questions, with regards to what size media, how deep / shallow the pot could be based on a specific orchid etc... you know the drill!! Never doubt, just ask and we can assess what you have, what will work and then rock and grow!! 😃Have a wonderful day, Joy!! Stay safe! ❤️

Great video Nina, I'm going to have to test the sea shell base I am trying out. It's heavily degraded shell so it composed mostly of calcium carbonate. But so far my orchids I have in the shell seem to love it and it's inert.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 года назад
Thank you Todd!! 🥂🎄 I like sea shells! When I got the first batch of seramis, I mixed sea shells into the whole batch. I have not added them to leca mixes ever, which now, I wonder why? I have so much of them left! I may actually try to remember to add them to the akadama mix if I need to aerate that a little bit, use up the terrarium grit and then move on to seashells or all three as a media! Thank you for the reminder... that is inspired! Did you get them at a garden centre, or just have them from way back when / did you need to leach out salts? By the sounds of 'heavily degraded'... all those considerations were not necessary. I will remember the shells for sure!! I appreciate you taking the time to watch. Have yourself a fabulous day! 🥂🌸

@@NinjaOrchids These are really crushed broken and some whole they're kind of mined here and used as driveway and parking lot base. They're so degraded theres no salt left in them, a good rinse is all I give them. Its $4 for a big 5 gallon bucket right down the street at a place called Seffner rock and gravel. 🦒🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️ Hello and G'morning !!! Great video, thorough and meticulous information !!! I never used lava rock, the ones I have available here are more the size of mounds 😂 but use charcoal instead which I can break to size. Have you ever used it? What do you think of it ? Oh, I know, orchids can grow on/in almost anything if adapted to the environment. Pretty interesting. I know someone that grows her Cattleyas on pine cones and doing fine although they might rot fast 😲. Brazilians use a lot macadamia (it's a nut) shells broken into pieces, it is very airy and keeps humidity in the curved bits. It is very cheap for them and the shells are so hard that they may last a lifetime. Have yourself a wonderful, wonderful day, mingi mingi abrazos 💖🤗😍
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 года назад
FFF 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🥰🥂🎄 I have never used charcoal... I have a problem with 'dirty' media, even tho it is inert and has all these fabulous properties. Something to do with having to have my hands clean all the time, as best as possible. I am a bit manic about that, and that is why I have never used charcoal. I know... sounds silly doesn't it!? I would love to use macadamia nut shells! Back in the day when I was growing in organic media, I used a lot of the shells of nuts that the children and I cracked over the Christmas season. Walnut, hazelnut... almond ... all the shells I collected and just distributed them on the surface of the pots, which were clay at the time. Very rarely repotted back then even if the media in the pot was disintegrating, eventually all that used to be flushed out and bit by bit replaced by the nut shells. Awesome media!! But... there is no good way of soaking the pots afterwards because they just float out 😆 but it is good stuff! I love macadamia nuts themselves, very much... just that they are so expensive! But they are my favorite nut . Good times, I had forgotten about having done that in the past, thank you for the flashback to my favorite balcony ever. Those were happy times with my children 🥰 Thank you for your kind feedback regarding this video as well. It could have easily been 40 minutes long, ... When I start talking about inorganic media, I could go on for a very long time! 😅 Appreciate the time you took to watch and I wish you, meine liebe Freundin, a wonderful beautiful, calm and productive day... whatever it is that you have to tackle today... I hope it all goes your way! Mingi abrazos amiga mia! 🥂❤️

Hey Nina Bose 🙂🙃Just what I needed♥️♥️ when I just started converting to full lava rock incorporating a little bit fern bark for moisture retention. All my orchids are outside hanging under a tree. This I did since there’s less air movement inside than I like it to be. And I hose them each day if there’s no 🌧. But there are vandas I recently potted in whole lava rock and a bit of sphagnum moss. What do you think about that? These are currently tesselata hybrids. And will be same for the ascosenda when I get them in Jan.

Why can’t you ph down your water that the Leca sits in? Or can you
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 года назад
Hi Michelle 🤗🥂 I could, but ... there is that word... my pH changes daily if I add products to my water. Suddenly something happens, which has some science behind it (I do not understand science stuff!) and my pH goes up. I see that in my vanda tub... and if I have some left over fertilized water, this time of year, I do not use up an entire bucket all the time... i check the pH in the morning and it has gone up compared to the day before. 🤷🏼‍♀️ the leca bucket, with no pH down in it, stays at 8... all the time! 🤷🏼‍♀️ So... I am not messing with the stored leca bucket and then I know what I am dealing with when it comes time to use it. When you soak your leca, let me know, what your findings are... super interesting, even though I do not understand the ins and outs of the pH reaction when a product is added to water 😬Thank you for taking the time to watch, Michelle!! Have yourself a wonderful day ❤️🥂

Is polysema x aberrans thinking about blooming? I thought I could see a little something there in the apex of that tallest bulb. Yes, lava rock is difficult with roots because they grab on so tight, you can't remove the roots from it without tearing off the velamen. The Tolumnia roots look like they are recovering now, I saw some nice white roots and some root tips there 👍 . And aurantiflammeum looks like it is chugging along. The new growth doesn't look like it has grown much but, winter, so not entirely surprising that it has slowed down but the roots still look good and the canes don't appear to have shriveled at all. 👍 👍 Take care my friend. I might have an interesting pic to post to IG in the next couple of days. Clowesia Rebecca Northen x Mormodes Mimi 'Wide Segments' started opening some buds today. With the Mormodes influence, the blooms take like three days to open fully, but they look promising (if you like pink with rose freckles that is).
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 года назад
Don Miguel 🥂🎄 🥰 I saw something in the apex when I was doing my 132 spike count... but did not include it because it doesn't seem to be moving. So... its a tease, a sign, that perhaps the coming new growth will be mature enough, and possibly, like the tetragonum, one day bloom despite being small. I love this little den... it was tiny when it arrived and it just as gone from strength to strength, and suddenly one growth was big enough to have that thin stem at the base and the bulbous pseudobulb at the top! I knew that my little den was become a 'big' boy! 😊 So cute! And the fact that I can leave it in that little pot for a few more years, makes me love it even more! The Tolumnia roots... yes!! Some are recovering and some of the growths are throwing out new roots!! 🙌🏼 I still think I may have lost 4... I have not binned them yet, but, it is not looking good ... however, .... the other ones, are starting to look so much happier, so what did I do today? Chucked some calmag and seaweed at them... many are spiking, they have not had anything for almost 2 months... after doing my YT housekeeping, I will go out and rinse them off with plain RO water. Just to be safe. I am sooooo looking forward to seeing that clowesia! I love pink, love freckles... an irresistible combo! I love the lava rock for dens... they can just stay in their pots for years... cattleyas, in my case, not so much! But.... let me tell you... the aurantiflammeum... that growth is doing really well, it is not thin anymore and is now bulging out at the base, I am soo pleased to have taken your advice and potted it up, despite my inner thought of throwing it on one of 'our' mounts. Would have been ideal, because it also came from you, but having it potted up, I have a lot more confidence that its going to just go nuts. (as nuts as a den can go 😆) I hope you wake up to a wonderful day!! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch 🥰🥂
