I became a slave to his music when I was about 14 years on hearing his Chakkani Raja in karaharapriyaa, his hindolam, above all his சின்னஞ் சிறு கிளியே in Raghamalika. Legend par excellence. Then whenever his music was played or relayed in AIR, I used to sit glued to the radio.. A wizard in its true sense.
Excellent presentation with great insights into the unparalled music ot Karukurichi sri P Arunachalam... Thanks to all the music lovers who have preserved these great recordings and offered it for the generations to come. After hearing this Lec-Dem, my love and regard for Karukurichiyar has increased manifold..
The young man sang Sri ragam kruthi of Dikshitar in the invocation so well !! What a majestic voice he has !! And it says a lot about the high quality, excellent teaching in the Music academy- kudos !! 💐💐💐
The analogy of Gangadhara-who gives us the divine Ganga in manageable bits-holds. Karukurichi is sublimely lyrical. He composed as he played I think! Dear Lalitharam brings passion, mission, and method to all that he does! Kudos!
Excellent presentation....your lecture is flowing and hooks us emotionally with the Karukurichi and kindles our desire to know about him.We appreciate the hard work you have done to prepare for this presentation ...your language is such that you are one with the audience as a go participant
Dear Shri. Lalitharam, I am Professor A. Sankaranarayanan (born and brought up in Harikesavanallur). I lived in Harikesavanallur until 1982. I was very fortunate to learn carnatic vocal from Guruji L. Mookaiah Kambar (very versatile and well known nadhaswara vidhwan from Harikesavaanallur, he himself is a disciple of the Legends Shri. L. Muthaiah Bhagavathar and violin Appavu Iyer). I record here what I heard directly from my Guru that indeed Karukurichi had learnt from him and in memory of that Karukurichi gave the recording of Ataana Krithi Bala kanakamaya of Thyagaraja. Of course I should mention here that my guruji is a great expert rendering the raga alaapana (for several hours of each) of Atanaa, thodi, pyagada, shankarabaranam to name a few. I am really very happy to listen your demonstration today and when I heard my Guruji's name in your talk, I thought of recording these facts. With best wishes A. Sankaranarayanan (Retired Professor from TIFR, Mumbai) Professor, School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Hyderabad (Currently) Harikesavanallur
Lalotharam is an ace lec dem performer. His earlier presentation about Madurai Somu was also very informative and scholastic. In my childhood Karukurichi Arunachalam came to Saidapet in 1962 and performed during Vinayaka festival organised by local Nagaswara Vidwan Saidai S. Natarajan who too passed away at young age.
Thanks a lot Sri Lalitharam for the wonderful presentation.. very much emotional, as you have said Easwara decides about such selection of sishya by Guru 🙏 Thanks MA for this 🙏
Such an eloquent presentation by Shri Lalitharaaman. An ardent admirer of the genius, he delivers his tribute to the maestro with passion. Gangadaran reference was very apt
Absolutely brilliant. Great Insights by Shri Lalitharam. One could see the total emotional involvement in the entire presentation. Thanks for giving us this opportunity.
Excellent insights into the musical genius of Sri Arunachalam (and his namesake who gave up his art once the more famous gent passed on). The Vachapasthi, Huseni and Mohanam clips were astounding to say the least. Kudos to Lalitharam for delving deep into the musical lives of these yesteryear giants. Highly informative and at the same time thought provoking. Best wishes, Ram.
Very well encapsulated features of the great vidwan’s music. Highlighting, the unique & novel aspects with nice excerpts made it very interesting to know, thank you very much Sri.Lalitharam🙏🏻
Such a wonderful and informative lec dem by prof dr lalitha ram. Be it tn rajarathinam pillai or any other nadswara vidwan … his insights gave people like me such an exposure to a wealth of information… and a true musicologist and scholar of the highest order… highly commendable 😊😊😊
Very emotional presentation. I felt all the vibrations that you carried and passed along to us. I haven’t met him, but if there is a chance, must meet you and converse about all the divine musicians. Thanks!
Very nice presentation. I also read your written note in Twitter which covered still more information including the one of his kutceris at a railway station on the request of a bolli merchant.
Excellent presentation and very informative, Thanks Lalitharam. Only observation is the repeated usage of an image that carries his birth year erroneously as 1907 (instead of 1921), considering this is his birth centenary presentation. The images with raaga names (arabhi) etc., could also have been cleaned up prior to usage. Takes nothing away though from the superb presentation.
The father of Karukurichi Arunachalam is not Palavesam Pillai; but, Palavesa Pulavar. This community is nothing to do with the popular community of "Pillai". "Pulavar" is the community that goes with "Pandaram". Kurumalai Lakshmi Ammal was a legendary singer of those years around Kovilpati. She was popularly known as Pattukara Lakshmi Ammal . Karukurichi Arunachalam's wife was the native of kurumalai whose family migrated to Idaiseval a nearby village. The 12 acres of Land assigned by Thirunelveli District Administration of Tamil Nadu Government to him for establishing a Music School is now either enchroached or tacitly allowed by his legal heirs for housing sites and commercial complexes. Only two cents of land for his memorial is left out of the 12 acres on the main location of Kovilpatti Town. Efforts, year long, were taken to celebrate the centenary is growing and growing. Lalitharaman has taken a unique mode to celebrate and remember Karukurichiyar. We are bound to congradulate him. On 10.04.2022, the celebration is under plan to go with 100 nathaswaram vidvwans in a procession around Nellayappar Temple and a day long meeting.
