Just did this for my wife's XP2.0 and she's all smiles! She says it takes the pressure off her hands which were stretching to reach the brakes and shifter with her small hands and minor arthritis in the thumbs. She feels it is a more relaxed position in general and since she is mostly street riding rather than trail, she appreciates the more upright position. Thanks Jeremiah for the tip!
Can you still remove the handlebars for travel? I can't take mine out anymore, though there should have been plenty of cable. Shop put them on, and I wonder what went wrong and if I can fix it. Can't get it in the car now!
@@JeremiahMcintosh Ah! Discovered shop had removed cable covers and bunched up all the slack under the cage the bike sits on while folded. I pulled slack back up to top, replaced cable cover and folded stem some and was able to get the top stem out! Thank you. Now I should be able to get it through the back seat car door!
I replaced my handle bar's just like this video. It made my seat more comfortable when riding. This made it when my back hurt a little I could still ride. my bike became easy to ride longer and i wanted to ride more often.
Good job!! here are a couple more tips for you. If you blow air on the edge of the grips on the bars that will move them also. but for most people we do not have a compressor so rubbing alcohol works great. I got mine off with a small screw driver to lift up the edge and squirting in rubbing alcohol . remove the screw driver and 2 twists per side and the were off, quicker then you did using air. but air on the other side of the grip would have been quicker for you too. That is how they remove open end grips since there is a hole on the end. When I did mine I put the grips on before I tightened the brakes and shifter. Made it much easier to get the spacing and my make sure the throttle still moved freely.
Waiting on my xp to be delivered; feels like an eternity and it’s only been a week!I’ve been watching your videos every day, itching with anticipation.
Thank you for the detailed info. I just ordered an XP 3.0 Black Friday Special. I also ordered the bars through your link, I hope they used the same gooseneck on the 3.0.
Thank you for the support Scott! For the 3.0 use the link in the description of my 3.0 video because the handlebar is bigger where it mounts than a 2.0.
I'm thinking of adding throttle to my Aussie edition Fortis fat bike (has same tyres as Lectric), Aussie law has something against throttles, have also unlocked the higher PAS levels, it now goes to 35kph
Just bought a thumb throttle, I did check that the controller has the 3 wire connector for the throttle before ordering, I heard that the later bikes don't have the throttle wires
if you don't care that much about folding, can you get more swept-back handlebars. My wife has arthritis in one wrist and I don't want her putting too much pressure on it. Figure more swept back bars would help.
Hi my husband and I just ordered two Lectric XP Step-Thru I’m excited can’t wait but there pre- back ordered for October :( I started to watch RU-vid about these bikes I saw your video thank for the tips Do you have a video to set them up?
Great video. I decided to order the handle bars. Amazon say unavailable. Wondering if you have any suggestions on another one might work. My step thru is coming Tuesday can’t wait. Thanks
This One looks almost identical to mine and should work.amzn.to/347UD96 Disclaimer this is an affiliate link and I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you if it is used.
Hey Jeremiah, Just got my XP 2.0 ST. Your videos are the primary reason I decided to get it. How did you get the handle bar bolts to loosen?? Mine are on there incredibly tight and I feel like my hex key is going to snap. Thanks for all good info,
I didn’t have any problems getting mine out just make sure you use a good quality wrench set or you can get a shorter one on a socket which might be easier.
@@JeremiahMcintosh cool thanks. Did you or your wife find that cruiser style swept back handlebars gave a little more control/confidence? I find the stock handle bars to a bit jerky
@@JeremiahMcintosh Excellent, thank you! I am coming off of a Trek Verve plus that although lighter and more expensive was slower and more work to ride, LOL
Great video on changing the handlebar, much appreciated the hint for taking off the grips. Question for you Jeremiah. Have you seen anyone selling an indoor trainer for stationary riding on the Lectric? We live in Wisconsin and want to be able to ride indoors during the winter. I saw your video on riding in the snow, and agree I don't want to get meted snow (water) on the working or electric parts of the bike. Plus, it is just too damn cold to ride outdoors...... Thank you for any help.
The two bolts on the top to get the handlebar loosened were extremely tight. I tried everything to get them off but I was afraid they would strip so unfortunately I found is not doable, any suggestions would be helpful.
Hey Jeremiah, really enjoy your videos, great content. Question for you and your subscribers. I looked at the bike racks in your links but they are "Prohibited" for RV Use. I'm looking for a 2-Bike Rack to fit in a 2" Hitch on my Class C RV. The ones I've saw are "Prohibited" from RV Use. Any suggestions?
One thing I have noticed with people who buy ebikes is they can't stop spending money on bike. If you looking for business opportunity get into creating accessories for ebikes.
Hi Jeremiah, it been a number of weeks since you changed your wife’s bikes handlebars. Would you mind giving a update on them? Does she still like them better than the originals? Has she found any problems, issues or concerns with the new ones and how they perform? I have a pair on order so I will be using this awesome video as a guide to change them. Thanks Ken👍😀🇨🇦
She loves them because it feels more natural and she doesn’t have as far of a reach. The only thing I realize while riding it with the new bars is it seems a little harder on your wrist if using the throttle a lot because of the angle. I may put a large zip tie on it to make it a thumb throttle.
We test rode a bike and my wife and I have two bikes ordered., We are used to Trek cruiser bikes which are very comfortable but due to joint problems we ordered these. Will be ordering these handlebars., Do you have to order new grips or can you use the original that came on Lectric bike? Ty for good video.
Yes you can use the same grips but if you decide you want something more comfortable after you may want to consider a set of silicone foam grips like I installed. There are links for all the items in the description of my video and if you do decide to use the links that helps support the channel.
That's another thing I don't like about the LECTRIC XP and XP 2.0 And I have a lot more things I don't like compared to other e-bikes. I'll be making a video on that. Those hand grips should have had Allen wrenches on both sides or another way to hold them on. Not only do you have to cut the rubber to put on one of those end mirrors. The grips themselves are very hard rubber which don't feel good on your hands. And I think they're glued on like you said or something. What a pain in the ass every time you want to change the angle of your bar they didn't think things through.. So yes I had to do the same thing for my wife to adjust the bar closer. You can also get 40 to 100 mm rise about 2 to 6 in or even more adjustment closer at 620mm length which is a little over 24 in The same size as the original bar. But what really stinks I'm a real big guy I need a 720 up to 800 mm 28 to 29 in length bar. Unfortunately for these bikes they don't use 31.8 necks only the old school 25.4 which is bizarre. You can't find rises over 20 mm That is over 620 mm long when you have a 25.4 inch neck. I've looked. everywhere. I needed it for a different reason. I needed a 100 mm rise because at 6'1 I still felt myself leaning over with the correct seat hight ( which I bet most people never do their seats are always too low ) I can send more upright. The seat is really high, and pull up rise that comes stock is all the way up as far as the bar can go. I really do need that 60 to 100mill rise replacing the handlebars to get my body sitting much more upright. Someone who doesn't have an air COMPRESSOR which I bet most people that watch these videos don't. You can use adjustable pipe wrench The plier type. With a cloth on the grips And it will turn it until you get it off or if you need to adjust the angle.
Nice video but you could have just turned the handle bar stem which would have brought the handlebar closer then adjust handlebar to dial it in with some work but less and no extra cost. There is a video to show you how.
Followed these instructions from start to finish and swapped out my handlebars last night. I'm a 61 y.o. disabled woman that knows how to use tools. LOL I have a set of PARK multi bike tools and used them to do the entire project. I even used my "potbelly" compressor with the nozzle to get the grips off. Worked like a charm!!!
You can buy grip glue but I prefer hair spray! Just spray it in each grip and that's it. It's a lube when putting on the grips and sticks them tight when dry. I'd let them rest over night to let the hair spray dry. Almost no residue when the grips are removed. I always use "ultra hold" for this purpose. I have put on 10's of thousands of grips using this method and it always works.
@@JeremiahMcintosh yup, I was making a product that had handgrips. They were 25" long and even had to slide over two 90 degree bends. I compared with grip glue and the hairspray worked best.
That's how I did it. They were so tight that I could not rotate them on the bar, even with a big set of pliers, but the air pressure popped them right off.
Hi jeremiah. Good video.. I changed out my straight bar for a swept back style about a month ago. My bike is an ecotric. So much more comfortable and the hand numbness has disapeared on long rides. Definately recomended and especially so if you have been having discomfort in the wrist, hand and back areas..
Just like your wife i wanted the grips a little closer. I considered getting a replacement handlebar. Then i took a good look at the stock handlebars and noticed they had a bend that made them about 1 1/2" higher. at the grips than at the stem. I simply rotated the handlebar 90 degrees then loosened set screws and adjusted position of brake handles, throttle, display, and power control button. In just a couple minutes I had my grips 1 1/2" closer, and more comfortable. The loss of height was easily fixed with the adjustable head tube latch. The hardest part of the job was rotating the hand grips which were really tight on the handlebars, but that was accomplished with the help of channel lock pliers.
I love the stock grips... You don't need to hold the handlebars tight if your on a smooth road. You actually turn a bike by pushing on the the grips over 2mph.. push the right grip to turn right. I know this from my motorcycle racing days. Its all about pushing and pressure to turn at riding speeds.
What I want to know is when will these e-bike companies are going to catch on that no one wants these stupid straight giraffe neck handlebars. Offer other choices for handlebars on your bikes guys.
Own personal preference. No matter how the bikes are designed people are going to put their own personal touch on it. Many people are happy with the original handlebars.
Watched your video and didn't have any problems changing out the handlebars. I did feel the throttle cable was a little tighter than before because of the extra reach so I changed how they were wrapped up to give a little slack in the wire. Appreciate you videos.
I'm so glad to see a woman's perspective of these Lectric bikes. And thank you , thank you, thank you for showing the new handle bars and the installation!! I'm 5"1' . How tall is your wife? I bought a commuter ebike and it's way to big. The seat has to be all the way down so I'm looking to sell it and get a Lectric xp 2.0 or Doheny step through. Good to know about changing the handle bars because I have a shoulder issue and with the longer reach with the bike I have, it limits my time on the bike. GREAT VIDEO!!!
I really enjoyed your video. Thanks for the step by step on how to change your handle bars it really helps to take the mystery out doing the job. So helpful thanks for sharing.👍😀🇨🇦
Thanks for mentioning the ring near the throttle. Sometime after replacing my handlebars for some a little wider about two months ago , I found a ring on the garage floor and couldn't figure out where it came from. I hung on to it, knowing I'd figure it out sooner or later, and today I did!
He does say "Basically" quite a bit. I play a drinking game and take a shot every time he says it. I'm shit faced on the floor drunk by the end of the video !
I’d like to get the same mirrors as you installed, but my grips seem to cover a handlebar that terminates with a plastic plug/cap. That plug is covered by the contoured grip with just a small hole in the rubber to see the plug capping the tube. It does not appear easy to remove the grips without damaging them. Would a solution be drilling out the small hole in the end of the rubber contoured grip to open up the path past the plastic plug/cap to the hollow tube of the handlebar?
Great video. I am about to buy a Lectric XP 2.0 and will probably make the same mod. I see we shop for tools at the same place (HF). One handy tool from the web i(not HF) s a "Y" shaped 4/5/6 mm allan wrench.
The Sunlite handlebar I referenced below may not be a good solution as a replacement bar because the handlebar end angle is almost 90 degrees (parallel to the bike). This may make it uncomfortable for using the twist throttle. I found another steel handlebar with a black finish called the The Surly Open Bar handlebar that has a 25.4 mm clamping diameter, either a 40 mm or 0 mm rise and 666 mm width. The angle of the handlebar end is 53 degrees so you can rest your palm on the bar and operate the twist throttle more comfortably. Since the width of the stock handlebar on the Lectric 2.0 is 635 mm (25 in), I am hoping that this handlebar will not require brake cables, etc. to be changed out on both the XP 1.0 and 2.0 models and will produce a very comfortable riding position. The cost of the Surly handlebar is $60.00.
Excellent video! My wife has mentioned that she wishes the handlebars were a bit closer as well, so this is an upgrade that we will look at as well. I had to adjust my handlebar, as the hand grips were pointed downwards. This put everything that was mounted on the bars out of position. When adjusting the shifter, it took an impact driver to loosen up the Phillips head screw. I’m sure others will run into the same problem. Thanks for the great demonstration and tips!
I had a similar problem the other day my whole handle bar got loose on my commute. And had no tools to fix it that time. Just want to tell everyone to tighten the handle bar before riding at least once a month cuz it might come loose.
Thanks, game changer. I am a 59 year old female. Those new handlebars should come standard. Because of you I was able to install them myself. I can sit straight up on the bike now and because of that, my field of sight has improved. Much safer as well as more comfortable. Means a lot.

Thanks for all the great videos and this one in particular... My question is with the stock straight handlebars steering is a bit wobbly for me. Do you think steering is a lot better and better steering control with these new handlebars.? Thanks for answering me in advance and keep posing new videos. Richard
I don't have an air compressor so I pried up the edge of the grip, sprayed in some WD-40, waited 30 seconds and the grips twisted right off. Since I put new grips on, all I did was wipe the bar, clean with alcohol and slide the new grips on.
Hey Jeremiah. I got my lectric xp Tuesday. Its beautiful 😍. I got a black step thru. I changed the handle bars just as you did. It has made a big difference. Much more comfy. I did not remove the stem. I loosened everything and just slid it right in the stem. I only remove the dipay. Thanks for making good videos. Love your videos.
THE ROCK BROS bag is pretty cool very expensive there's also a disadvantage to it. You could buy a saddle bag kind of like the one your wife's bike has. Mine is a 30L one.. The problem with the Rock Bro is that you're stuck with the top piece that is there all the time if you want to just use the saddlebags. For instance I have 2 in straps that are 48 in long that I could put a very big crate The length of the rack on top of the saddlebags like your wife has. That holds a hell of a lot more stuff than the Rock Brothers top. Especially if your grocery shopping or something. And with those straps you can also put other things if you don't want to put the crate on top with the saddlebags. For instance I use those straps to strap down a 5 lb JBL XTREME 2 BOOMBOX!! Holds it perfectly. And then I came to some of the situations like strapping a basketball to the top with those two straps. Actually strapping two basketballs. If you use the Rock Bro bag you can't do any of those things I just mentioned. And you potentially lose some room If you're going to put other things like a crate on top that has more storage. And it's a lot cheaper to use the straps and the saddlebags Then it is to buy that almost $100 rock bro bag. I think my saddlebag the 30 l one only cost me $25 on Amazon Day.. It has been absolutely perfect with those straps to carry almost anything I want.. ;)
Love it! I know it makes a huge difference to her back. I have lower back issues and I think I’ll get my handlebar changed WHEN MY BIKE ARRIVES. Hopefully, not much longer. It would be nice if that was an option when you purchased the bikes. Thank you, Jeremiah, for all your reviews and accessory choices. You have helped me in deciding a lot to be ready when my bike arrives. Hello to your wife son. They are blessed to have you to take such good care of them. Your skills are priceless. You have a beautiful family. If I could ride as many miles as your son, I’ll be very happy! Oh yes, I hope a sponsor sends some of those communication helmets to review so you and your family can communicate while riding. Then we will know which ones you like. I saw some that up to four family members can communicate with. I think those are so important to have. Thanks again!
Jeremiah Mcintosh I know I didn’t call them the correct name, but I think you know what I am speaking of. I heard you mention them before. I hope you get to review some. Have a lovely day. Ps. I enjoy all of your reviews. Hello to your family.
Jeremiah Mcintosh thank you for mentioning the LECTRIC XP OWNERS GROUP in one of your reviews. I tell other owners about the group as well. It’s a wonderful group. Have a lovely day.
@@JeremiahMcintosh hi from Georgia. I finally got 210 miles on my eBike! I haven’t been able to ride since last Sunday because I started a spinal cord stimulator trial on Monday, November 30th. I will return to the doctor to have the lead removed from my back on Monday, December 7th. It’ll probably be awhile before I ride again, unless I use throttle only, because I will have the stimulator implant on December 22nd. Then, I most likely will just wait until the spring of 2021 to ride again, depending on how my back heals after getting the spinal cord stimulator implant. Hello to your beautiful wife and son.
Thank you for this video! Ordered new bars, but realized I ordered the wrong size after watching your video, so I ordered from your link. Hoping this helps the numbness and pain in my hands & wrists!
@@JeremiahMcintosh the handlebars are much better than the ones that come on the bike! I took it for a spin tonight & didn’t have any numbness or pain. I feel I’m sitting more upright, which will also help my back.
Love your videos. We are retiring to FL as of November and getting two of these bikes to ride all over Punta Gorda.. Thanks for all your videos on this bike.!!!
I am worried about the reach on the Lectric bike, I can see just from the videos of people riding that my 5'2" height might be a problem. Now I see there is a solution! Thanks for sharing.
I really appreciate this video. I have a Lectric XPremium and I will be changing the bars and the hand grips. I am glad you showed how the new bars work when you fold down the bike. I will be using different grips but I liked how you showed how easy it is to replace them. Thanks again for all your videos on the Lectric bikes. I have had mine over a year now and really love it.
Cool mod. I'm hoping the wider 2.0 handlebars will be ok, but now I see I can change them out if need be. Nothing better than brownie points with the wife!😎
I just got the 2.0 for my wife and she's complaining about the handlebars, having to reach too far. I'll order the handlebar shown here and see if she likes the change, and return them if they aren't better.
