ABOUT
The LectroFan Evo has a wide range of white noise and fan sounds to choose from and a very loud maximum volume, so it has plenty of options for blocking out noise that may be bothering you during the night or daytime.
It only has two ocean surf and no other nature sounds or music tracks though. The addition of the headphone jack is one of the main features that gives it a more modern touch compared to the similar sounding LectroFan Classic.

I think the ocean sounds are intended to be "ocean pitch" at various distances and intensities, rather than accurate simulations of a beach scene. To explain it in visual terms, think of it as a picture of the beach, but blurred (or averaged out) until there's nothing distinct. Actually that's better for me, because a constant drone is easier to sleep to, than anything that includes variations like that one loud wave crash that comes up every 15 minutes, or god damned seagulls squawking. I think that's what they were going for, anyway. As for the rechargeable battery, I think they've made a deliberate choice to steer travellers toward their other models which are purpose-designed for travel use. I think the lack of internal battery increases the international shipping options which can be an issue for things which contain lithium batteries, and it also keeps the cost down, given that the Lectrofan name already attracts a premium, I think keeping it affordable is great. Anyway, great review. Thanks for that. :)

@nosleeplessnights1 5 лет назад
Thanks, glad you liked the review. I think you make some good points there. I agree that a constant drone with less sudden changes to the sound are better for sleep. But still, I think it's good for people to know what kind of nature sounds they are - in this case, not the sound of an ocean that you might hear if you were actually next to an ocean. And with the battery, you're right in that there is the LectroFan Micro, which is probably better for travel because, well, it's pretty micro. But I think people like to know if a specific device has a battery operated option or rechargeable battery, so I've made it clear in this case. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes to shipping costs compared to other devices of this size and comparable price to be honest though. Thanks again for your comments. You'll know from the review that I really like the Evo, so it's nice to hear some alternative thoughts on the very few criticisms I have of it.

Thanks for the review. compared to the classic, are the white noise and fan sounds equally smooth and realistic sounding? any difference in quality/smoothness?
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 4 года назад
You're very welcome! I don't think there's much difference at all. Maybe the manufacturer made changes to the speaker, but if they did, my ears are not sensitive enough to pick out the difference. Both versions seem to produce identical sound quality and smoothness to me, so I guess it comes down to choosing based on the new features and extra 2 ocean sounds, or sticking with the original.

Hi, thank you so much for your video! I am in desperate trouble currently with sleep difficulty, and one of these will be a life saver to me. Can you please tell me - what’s the difference between the older white coloured lectrofan, and the evo model, other than the timer difference? All I need is a typical air fan sound (nothing else at all). Thank you! Also, how energy efficient are these, typically, as I would be using mine for 9 hours every night. Also please can you tell me how durable these are? Given I’ll be using mine very heavily every single night. Thank you very much!
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 2 года назад
Here are my thoughts on those questions - there may be longer answers, but these are my initial ideas: 1. The Evo has 2 ocean surf sounds extra. It has a headphone jack. And the shape/design is different. Otherwise, both sound very similar and are just as good if you only want white noise and fan sounds. 2. They are energy efficient enough not to cost a big jump in electricity bills. 3. Hard to say. Mine are still running fine, but people do sometimes complain they break in one way or another. It's the same for all white noise machines (and electronics in general) though, so an element of luck / bad luck is involved. But they at least feel well made and not from flimsy plastic like some other brands. The original lectrofan actually felt more robust to me, but I like the design of the Evo more.

Thank you for the review! I think this could be a great machine if they improved the quality of the speaker in order to cover very low frequency noise, and of course if they made a real brown noise. I have the previous version of Lectrofan, and in my opinion, none of the brown noises are the real thing. I bought an 10 hours brown noise mp3 track which I play in a JBL charge 3 speaker, and that's indeed good. It sounds like the jet engine, you can hear when you travel by plane. I need it because I suffer from misophonia and the house I live in has very thin walls, my flatmate snores like an animal in agony, very low base disturbing sound, and my neighbours are pounding the floors with heavy feet all night. Hard to beat that thudding, but JBL speakers do a very great job, they go to 65 Hz low frequency. I'm hearing that JBL charge 4 go down to 60 Hz which is even lower, therefore better. Lectrofan helps me sometimes with other noises, and also helps to spare the battery from the JBL sometimes. Maybe Lectrofan's the manufacturers are trying to keep the price low, or something, but I tell you for sure, noise and lack of sleep is so disturbing and dangerous for mental health that paying for a good machine is really worth it. I know I'd pay even 300 euros or more if needed, for a good machine. Anyway, thanks a lot for taking time and doing this review. I won't buy it :)))))

Hi axisludi. Well, I'm glad the review was enough to help you make a decision, even if the decision is not to buy it! It's important to me that my reviews also help people filter out products that aren't going to be right for them, so I appreciate you explaining why. It was also interesting to read your comment and see how you manage noise in your home. It sounds like you've thought about it a lot and have a pretty serious system going there! Incidentally, I'm pretty sure a 300 euro white noise machine doesn't exist, so you'd be better off spending your money on some amazing speakers if you fancy a change in the future.

For anyone out there with one of these who has a neighbour with a yapping dog out in the early hours, is this effective to stop you waking up? If so, which settings are best?
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 4 года назад
Hi, I can also help answer this question, even though I know you asked people in general. In my opinion, no white noise machine is guaranteed to block out very loud sounds like barking dogs - especially if they are nearby. I think if it's more distant, and you put it near the window on a louder setting, you might have a chance of masking external noise. But if it's coming through your shared bedroom wall, for example, then putting the machine on a nightstand won't help much. Maybe if you use the headphone jack it will be better with decent noise-canceling headphones. But I wouldn't recommend listening to white noise loudly through headphones night after night. My advice is to try white noise on a phone App first, with and without headphones, to see if it helps before buying a dedicated machine. If anyone else is reading this, I'd love to hear if you agree with me, and what advice you have for mrnut123.

I called Animal Care & Control on my neighbor who would leave their dog in their house alone for hours to bark and bark and bark out of loneliness. The saddest, most mournful sound you’ve ever heard. And the dog was obviously barking loud enough to try to be heard by it’s “pack” - “Hey! I’m over here! Come get me!” Poor dog. Don’t get a dog if you are just gonna throw it into your $4.2 million dollar home and leave it alone all day, every day. At least get 2 dogs so they can keep eachother company. Or get one of those pet cams with audio and say something to it off site. In any case I called Animal Care & Control, who came out and fined them for leaving their dog alone every day, causing misery and suffering for the dog and the neighbors. And the noise stopped. As for the jerk who said to poison the dog if the noise continues, it’s not the dogs fault, it’s the owners fault. Call in a noise complaint. Anonymously.

@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 5 лет назад
Hi, no there is no battery option. You could try the LectroFan Micro 2 which has a long rechargeable battery of up to 40 hours. But if you're away for several days with no power, you could try a battery operated device, of which there aren't really many very good ones. Perhaps try the Big Red Rooster, which takes 4xAA batteries. It's not as good quality as the LectroFan, but it's one of the few that take batteries. In terms of taking the Evo overseas, yes you can, but you might need to buy one with the international plug selection included (if they still make that version), or just use a standard power adaptor.
@gblargg
@gblargg 2 года назад
Just plug it into a USB battery power bank. These use very little power so will last days on a charged bank (I used one during the multi-day power outage in Texas). For the earlier LectroFan model, and I doubt they made the Evo use more power.

@nosleeplessnights1

Unfortunately not. I have a dog, so I know how hard it is to block the sound of barking. Maybe if it were further away or not so loud, a machine would do the trick. But not if the dog is in the room next door and barking like crazy. Your best bet is to either try it with headphones, or just use headphones or earplugs. Or...find a way to stop the dog barking, which worked for me. It took a couple of weeks to teach my dog the 'quiet' command, but I got him when he was young.

I appreciate your review, but unless I got a defective one - this machine is terrible. Sure the sound is nice and loud, however the sound on this is muffled and actually left my ears ringing, hurting, and gave me a terrible headache. All the sounds sound the same, including the fans. To me they sounded more like a factory running than a fan. I would not recommend this machine at all, and I would advise people to read the negative reviews for this on Amazon first before trying this out. It is also overpriced. I have already purchased two white noise machines from Amazon in the past week. One cheaper and this one overpriced. The cheaper model's sound quality was good - but the speaker was too low, and this one is loud enough, but sounds horrible. Overall, I would take the cheaper one with the better sound, but low speakers over this model. I did send both of them back and now I'm still at square one. Just an FYI to anyone looking into this one.
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 3 года назад
Thanks for sharing your experience - sorry to hear it was a bad one though. It may be that you got a defective one as the sounds should neither be muffled nor the same. Out of interest, when you watch my video and I play all the sounds, do they still sound the same to you? That would be one way of telling if the problem was your device, because mine was definitely not defective. What was the other device you bought and also sent back? If you're not happy with the white noise machines, and are worried about wasting money and/or time on them, perhaps you could try a normal Bluetooth speaker connected to your phone instead and use a free App or RU-vid to play white noise. It might give you more options and control over the sound you hear. You might also find a white noise machine with an internal fan more pleasant to listen to. However, if it's giving you ringing ears and terrible headaches, perhaps white noise just isn't right for you - and certainly not loud white noise. Do you get the same negative reaction when you listen to recordings of natural sounds like rivers, rain, or waterfalls? If not, maybe a machine, or App, which focuses more on natural sounds than intense white noise could suit you better.
@nicolemarie011
@nicolemarie011 3 года назад
@@nosleeplessnights1 The Bluetooth speaker option is not feasible for me as I need something to play all day long, or at least for many hours at a time. And I don't have a good phone or battery for that. My neighbors across the street got a dog and they let it stand there and bark for hours. It stands at their front door and barks while they are out in their front yard with their kids gardening. It doesn't stop when they go in the house. It still barks while they are in the house and they say and do nothing about it. It is a Beegle or Bassett Hound type dog and the bark is shrill and howling. It's terrible. I am fine with white nose, or most I have listened to online and even the first machine I bought the white noise was ok (just not loud enough). It was just this particular model (Lectrofan). The white noise sounded harsh, no matter what setting it was on (besides the very first setting) and the fans sounded too factory like. I just don't think the sound quality of this machine is good. And yes it did sound similar when you played the sounds. It may have been more muffled because I played it on the highest volume, but still at lower settings it just did not sound good to me. I read other reviews on Amazon that supported my feelings on this as well. I found some reviews to say the Classic had much better sound than this Evo, and some felt the company "cheaped" out when making this newer model. I enjoy the nature sounds, but I found they are just not loud enough to drown out a barking dog. I am leaning towards just getting an Amazon Alexa Echo speaker, however when looking into reviews on those who had used it for white noise - some complained of Alexa chiming in at 2am constantly to leave a review and hounding people to upgrade to the paid version of the app. I am now hesitant to order one. I have looked into the Adaptive Sound Technologies machine you reviewed, but it is rather pricey. And negative reviews seem to indicate there was or is a problem with the machine breaking down after only a couple months. Would you say the Adaptive Sound machine gets as loud as the Lectrofan? Thanks for your feedback.
@nosleeplessnights1
@nosleeplessnights1 3 года назад
I understand - dogs are notoriously difficult to block out. I also have the LectroFan classic, but didn't think the sound quality was that different. But at the end of the day, the speakers on these little devices are always going to struggle to provide as rich and full a sound as we might hear naturally from real noise like a heavy waterfall. The Sound+Sleep device (I believe you mean this one - Adaptive Sound Technologies is the company who made that one and then bought out LectroFan a while back) is good, but not as loud as the LectroFan. So if it's volume you want, it won't be better. Did you see my latest video in which I test the volume of different machines? I didn't include that one, but you might find it interesting anyway. I also included an Echo Dot in it, and I like the speaker quality. But yes, if you rely on Apps, you might get a rude awakening if you haven't paid for the full version. Even if you don't have a good phone, you could perhaps connect a speaker to it and use RU-vid instead to play white noise. You can find videos with an advert at the start, but then many hours of continuous white noise. Just another option for you:-)

Oh, the other machine I purchased was the newest model of Letsfit. It has the alarm clock on it. I liked the sound of this machine better, but it was not loud enough. I forgot to add that in my prior comment.

The first one I got had a speaker issue that caused it to crackle and be quieter, but they replaced that promptly. I've since found several more at thrift stores and they're all quite loud when at maximum volume (this is their LectroFan model, but I imagine this Evo has at least as beefy a speaker as the older one).

The brown noise one is the only decent sound. The rest are terrible! Do people really fall asleep to a construction equipment, diesel engine or generator sound? That's what most of these sound like.

Hi! Everyone has their own opinion of the sounds, and I can understand if you only like one of them. I agree that some of the fan sounds are very industrial, and I wouldn't use them for sleep either (some people would though). For the sake of accuracy, while some of the fan sounds do sound industrial, none of the white noise sounds do, because they are simply white noise sounds.
