Slick video! I'm curious how many mixers/recordists would even attempt to track and mix from a follow-car 500' away? Maybe if you had a redundant quartet of receivers feeding a second recorder dropped in the backseat/trunk of the picture car, but without local-recordings, I don't think many are risking their capture just to have hands on faders. That'd be like if the cameras didn't have media cards in them and the video footage was only being recorded hundreds of feet away at the other end of a Teradek transmission. @9:06 you mention this approach is probably what they do in Documentary or Reality car-to-car coverage. In my experiences, it's not. It's typically dropped bags and monitoring via IFB from the follow car. In those faster-paced genres, there's often not time for shark fin setups and tethering cast to roof antennas. I do like the small magnet roof mount for my IFB's whip antenna (it's quick to deploy/small footprint).
This is an awesome video and I am a lectro user but I can't help but watch this whole video and think that a huge thing missing from this awesome setup is a way to record built into the transmitters.
Can share a little insight on the reality car shooting, at least in the case of one show. Working on the latest Top Chef, had 3 hero cars for talent that were pre-rigged with go-pros (can't remember the syncing details) & lavs in visors/ceiling that fed into a bag rig in each and left to run continuously. That was on top of Zax TX recording talent all day too.
thanks for the video Michael, been trying to find those magnetic antenna on trew and gotham, can you link me to them car scenes are always a pain and this is something i would like to explore in my next shoot
Hi Jon, During the shoot, we did for actual runs. One of which was with the Betso bowties. The performance was very lackluster, and we felt that it wouldn’t be appropriate to use this type of antenna in a car to car situation so we left it out of the edit.
@@MichaelWynneCAS thanks Michael! Are these belt pack units like the Lectrosonics DPR’s? Considering getting a pair and might look at the dpa6060 as they sounded lovely
Hey Michael, What type of antenna cable and what length was used to remote the body pack antenna to the mag mount on the roof of the truck? Also were both the plant mics and lav mics using this technique with antennas on the roof?
Hi Ken, the cable is connected to the mag mount, my guess is it’s RG174, also the plant antennas were attached to the transmitters under the visors inside the truck
Great video! I'm wondering: the receiver vehicle has rigged 2 sets of antennas (directional and omni), are both being used simultaneously to receive the signal? I've never tried that
