Hugh Nibley was a brilliant man, a real Renaissance man competent in Music, Art, History and Science. He had a photographic memory and often quoted ancient texts verbatim in their original languages during his lectures. The former dean of the Harvard Divinity School, George MacRae, once lamented while hearing him lecture, "It is obscene for a man to know that much!"
Nibley was famous for his research into ancient documents dealing with religious practices and lifestyles and their relationship to modern religion. He became fluent in 12 languages because had to, as the texts he was studying had yet to be translated into English. This list includes Hebrew, Greek, Egyptian, Classical Latin, Coptic, Arabic, Russian, German, French, Dutch, Italian, and Spanish. He also studied Old Bulgarian, Old English, and Old Norse.
Nibley's rigorous defense of Mormon scriptures earned him a worldwide reputation as a scholar. Nibley was praised by Evangelical scholars Mosser and Owen for his ability to draw upon respected historical, archaeological, and linguistic sources to provide strong support for Latter-day Saint beliefs.
At the time of this Lecture series, Nibley was Professor Emeritus of Ancient Scripture at BYU, having retired in 1976. He can be viewed as the Godfather of LDS scholarship. He published 19 books and also published dozens of scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals on topics without direct reference to Mormonism. It is a rare treat to hear him speak, as he passed away in 2005. If you enjoy this lecture, please forward it on to others you thing would enjoy it as well.

The fullness of the gospel does not mean every doctrine of the gospel. It refers to what we need to do and to become for redemption to the presence of God. And this is living by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repenting, receiving the covenant of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end of your life according to these principles.

Righteousness as repentance

Because the the fullness of the gospel is about repentance. Instead of canned thoughts you heard from some lawyer-priest read the book for yourself. It was written for you in love and with a passionate plea. The reality of the teachings are manifest by GOD to those who are honest seekers and willing to keep the His commandments. They wrote for our joy and happiness.

1 Nephi 18:2 Nephi did not build his ship like the ones built in Arabia or anywhere else. Referring to ship building in an Arabian port is meaningless. Other than that I love these lectures

Um excuse me I've heard of this man but who could take this seriously first of all no cross reference to Noah in the old testament?

If you are referring to Dr. Nibley, please read of his educational achievements and his ability to read multiple ancient languages. Also his research into these languages, the content of ancient writings including the Book of Abraham from very ancient Armenian sources. No one is more respected than he in the world of ancient writings and ancient scripture. Do your due diligence before criticizing. Noah is not character in the Book of Mormon, the current study in these lectures. Noah may be mentioned in passing while referring to many historical social constructs. But not as study in these lectures.

Obviously Mr Nibley is a very pleasant and intelligent gentleman. But rather than studying the word of God, the Bible, he studies the writings of one man, Joseph Smith, Mormonism's founder. As I listen to this man l am reminded of 2Timothy 3:7,' ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth'. The truth that makes us free is only found in the Holy Bible, (John 8:32). Joseph Smith and his Book of Mormon claims have long been discredited, yet people, ( exclusively Mormons like hugh Nibley,) doggedly defend it, primarily because it is, as Mormons believe, 'the keystone of their faith', if it falls everything else goes down with it. In contrast the Holy Bible is the Keystone/sole rule of faith for Bible believing Christians, and there lies the great gulf and irreconcilable difference between Mormonism and Biblical Christianity, authority. Mormonism teaches it's followers to actually distrust the Bible, evidence for This is seen in the church's 8th Article of faith, stating that the Bible is not translated correctly, but that simply reflects Joseph Smith's original condemnation of the reliability and authority of the Holy scriptures. This is the fundamental reason that Joseph Smith's teachings writings and practices take pre- eminence over the Bible in the LDS church, they trust Joseph Smith more, he said it,they believe it.(Mormonism 101). The only authentic ancient Jewish civilization fills museums with millions of relevant artifacts, these are being discovered continuall across modern day Israel, many confirm the Bible's narrative. Incredibly, archeologists actually use the Bible to locate archeological sites!. The absence of credible evidence bears silent testimony against Joseph Smith as the decades roll by. Please read the Bible and trust it completely as Christ's followers have done for 2,000 years, trust the real non Mormon Jesus Christ and the real everlasting gospel found only in its pages,( the one Joseph Smith rejected and replaced with another gospel and another faith.) kind regards to all, especially Mormon /LDS folk.

Geoff Noyes. You may know your Bible well, but if you think the Bible is the last word, you should review how it came about and you will realize it is a compounded book from hundreds of copies of copies and leaves out the teachings of many writings of men of the first century, some of whom may have first hand knowledge of Christ’s teachings. The councils of Nicaea and the others decided on what uninspired men “felt” should be the Doctrine of Christ. A review of the Dead Sea Scrolls and many similar documents give us many insights into how the modern Bible is full of errors and omissions. You would do well to read Dr. Nibley’s many, many writings from his time at Berkeley, getting his PhD., and his many academic works for his research into ancient religions and societies. When you get your PhD in these studies and equal his research work, maybe you may criticize. Remember that the Book of Revelation precedes the Gospel of John and the New Testament books were put in an arbitrary order in early 3rd and 4th centuries by the same “Fathers” who made their own Christianity with uninspired creeds. So new revelation from many sources must be always given attention and study.

"A Bible ! A Bible ! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more BIble." Since you (Geoff) are familiar with the Bible I direct your attention to the vision of John where it was given to the Gentiles to "tread" the holy city forty and two months (1,260 days). Next, the woman who brought forth the man child fled into the wilderness for 1,260 days (forty and two months). Tell me Geoff, when will the Jews be restored to the land of Israel and the city Jerusalem? And when will the woman come forth out of the wilderness?
