Thanks Pastor for all of the wise words and teaching. Many years ago, I was in training for a sales role with a big company. As I had to do a lot of public speaking, they videotaped us speaking to a group for 5-10 minutes. Then we watched it and critiqued ourselves for demeanor, tone, and gestures. But the real learning, on gestures, came when they speeded up the tape at maybe twice the normal speed. This accentuated my gestures. One of the things I did was sort of pull on an ear lobe, occasionally (or so I thought, haha). However, when sped up, I thought I was going to pull my ear off, I did it so often. By compressing this in a shorter, faster time, I saw my natural tendencies of gestures and was able to adjust those that might be distracting. It was a great lesson for me.
YES. 100.0% That pulls out macro gestures. Watching at .5x speed pulls out other features: things like micro expressions. And... it's cool that RU-vid has this playback speed feature built in.
"Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity," - Titus 2:7, the word "dignity" here is semnotēs, which means reverence and seriousness, which I think is just what Ps John meant of conveying the gravity and worth of the text by convey the emotions and demeanour that the text demands. This is a kind of leadership done in the power of the Holy Spirit, like how Paul led the Philippians to rejoice in the Lord by repeatedly telling them his own joy in the Lord.
These are some of the strategies that I used to teach Public Speaking. Also, I like how you put so much passion and heart into proclaiming the word of God. 🔥
Thank you Brother Piper! I can relate to that young man who needed to come out of his shell. I had a teacher try to help me do that in front of a high school language arts class by reading a poem. I was so deathly shy that I just COULDN'T read it with any emotion, I was entirely monotone! I related to Brother Pipers story of how intimidated he was to be in front of people early on. I will say that the teacher didn't give up, he REALLY tried to get me to do it, which made my failure so much more grand! It is almost like it requires us to be in control of our emotions in order to do it, not controlled by them. Blessings!
This session is really concerning! At one point Piper says he almost shoved another Pastor off the stage. And at another point he makes fun of how an intern read scripture on the stage. These are not nice and light and innocent things. They reveal an abusive personality and character!
I am so thankful for this series on preaching Pastor John and Desiring God team. I caught your genuine care and eagerness in modelling to young pastors. Loved the seriousness packed with humor and laughter in this episode.
