Lecture: Biblical Series XI: Sodom and Gomorrah

Watch Exodus available exclusively on DailyWire+: bit.ly/3UgQLe6
Often interpreted as an injunction against homosexuality (particularly by those simultaneously claiming identity as Christians and opposed to that orientation), the stories of the angels who visit Abraham, bless him, and then rain destruction on Sodom and Gomorrah are more truly a warning against mistreatment of the stranger and impulsive, dysregulated, sybaritic conduct.
Abraham opens his heart and hearth to the stranger. The denizens of Lot’s soon-to-be lost cities threaten them with violent rape. God exacts a terrible retribution. The warning is clear.

That's just stupid. And his point was made in the context of noticing a certaing peculiar attitude or behavior in someone. First you notice it, second time you take it into account(okay that happened, I did not imagined that), third time you say something about it. Now... someone hitting you in the face is not something you 'notice'. You don't say, did I just got hit in the face? Hmm... let's see i'll be more attentive next time maybe that was just a muscle twitch. No. Nobody does that. Stupid.

I believe the numbers are only women in the 85th percentile of aggressiveness and disagreeable attitudes would overlap with men in the 50 percentile range.. so every single individual at the most aggressive and most disagreeable end of the Spectrum, which is the precise attitude a war leader would need to take, are all men without exception. I have watched this series many times now and I think this episode in particular would help a friend of mine, though unfortunately I have tried helping several times, without making things any better. Peterson would say to stop helping at that point. I have. But I do try to be an example for him. I pray that he gets the courage he needs to realize his own value and what he can be. And to leave his wretched job and go forth to a place that values his auto mechanical skills. If I had one wish I would have everyone watch this series. Heck I would pay them to watch it. So valuable. You are valuable if only you realized it!! But you gotta pick yourself off the ground and go find an aim!!

Actually I have a pretty good idea of why lot offered his daughters over a stranger. Hospitality isn't just an idea, a kindness, it's a duty. It is the duty that formed the foundation of all human trade and diplomacy. In most ancient kingdoms, to take someone into your home, under your roof, to feed and shelter them for a night, was a oath. It was an oath none would forgive breaking. It isn't just that the gods won't forgive your breaking of this oath, they will hate you for breaking this oath. In essence, it would be a more forgivable misdeed to allow your family to be harmed than a guest, unless that guest was to try and harm your family. I suspect it is because protecting your family is an expectation, you don't get to brag about it as you are supposed to do it. With a guest, you chose to take on that responsibility.

You must remeber past to make conclusions from it. When it is fully sorted out, then your mind lets it go and you forget. There is idea that lessons from difrent times can be needed in the futere, when new problems arives. That's why archives of history is crucial. You can see some nostalgia for communism in some people but mostly it's because of nostalgia for young age and times with more social contact without Internet.

@ObserverDingue

I had the exact same question at that point in his lecture. I thought two things: 1) it is always possible that Peterson is fallible or that the manner in which he makes a point can be vague as it's done on the hoof to a certain extent. He's human after all so he has his own idea and chooses his own words. If he were making that point in a book he might edit it (as he described his writing process in an earlier lecture in this series) whereas on stage he is, to some extent free-wheeling along. And 2) maybe you and I are being too vague in our response and ignoring some aspect of the context of the squirrels' storage activity. In a spirit of cooperation I'm going with 2 although it's possible that in writing this idea down Peterson would modify his words a bit. So when the squirrels bury some nuts to eat in the future winter are they making a sacrifice? It's possible that they are not (and thus Peterson's statement stands): there are so many nuts in the autumn that the ones the squirrels store away hardly constitute a sacrifice, a denial of eating. They can, and do, stuff themselves with nuts when they are abundant. So the storing away for the future winter is not a sacrifice.... it's a supplemental activity based upon an abundance. You can still argue that the labour of this activity is a sacrifice (they could lie down with their fat bellyful of nuts and have a snooze) but they are not sacrificing today's gratification as they've eaten their fill in any case. Peterson's point was that humans are unique in sacrificing the present for the sake of the future. It's a concept that I'll look out for in other lectures, maybe he returns to it and expands upon it. Everything has its grey areas and fuzzy boundaries. Especially squirrels! How have the intervening 2 years treated you John? Well I hope.

2:08:06 this example happened in my family almost exactly as he said. My grand-grandmother was an alcoholic whom beated the crap out of my grandfather and I suspect she might had a bit of a tragic life too. He turned out violent against his wife and kids and even murdered his children's godfather to betray my grandma and lay with the other men's woman. My mother turned into a depressed woman and addicted to benzo for all her life and tried suicide couple of times, my uncle turned into a violent and a tyrant against every single kid of his three marriages and used to beat his wife too and promise his whole life he would murder my grandma if he found her, forcing my mom to always hide her throughout my grandma's life, and both I and my cousins were deeply affected by that. I even had to develop a bit of an Atlas complex when my mom got divorced few years ago, turning into the "patriarch" of the house despite being a third-world teenager in his first job. I try the hardest to not turn the whole situation in my house in an Oedipus' disaster as Jordan described when talking about that Crumb documentary, since my mother is overly-reliant of me, both economically, emotionally and sometimes even physically to the point of crippling quite a bit of her own independence, and I'm too afraid to change this until she finds a good husband whom we can both trust, since she is suicidal and self-destructive. I couldn't stop myself from turning into a bit of a degenerate though, in may aspects of life, and that's why I empathized so much with the Crumb's. I hope our family's sin is forgiven before if befalls in my grand-grandchildren's lives, it must stop on the fourth generation.

You can stop the continuum of generational sin, by like Abraham walk with God and keep his Commandments. And I believe like the paralgetic at the pool, Jesus said to him,," would Thou be healed" Jesus said,,"take up thy bed and walk", by faith he believes and after many many years he casts his fears aside and took up his bed and walked. God wants us to walk like Abraham not without obstacles in our lives. But with purpose and meaning that God's will has a purpose in our lives. For You and Me and our families and friends.

Turn it ALL over to the Lord dear one as the kind of mess that has been the story of your family for generations may well be that demonic spirits inhabit your family ancestry . You can stomp it out by getting yourself right with the Lord Jesus and asking for help to evict any and all demonic spirits from your present day family. I know that there are a lot of people who don't have a clue just how bad a mess so many families have been and still are. Satan has targeted families for the express purpose of destroying the unit that God invented to make humans function properly. I pray that you make it out of the mess with your hand in HIS hand, as it sure sounds like you need to flee the snake pit for sure!

I think the reason for being so direct with people, talking them without a big wall in between, is not from being a clinical psychologist. It must surely help knowing how to talk, but I've noticed that people who have or had depression are often more willing to engage in an honest conversation where they lay their cards on the table and expect you to do the same. With people who haven't gone through depression it's sometimes difficult to talk with, because they give so reserved responses and don't necessarily start conversations. They always keep you at arm's length and the conversation easily dies. However the depressed or having been depressed people seem to many times attempt to get something real out of the conversation even if you had just met. And it makes for interesting conversations indeed, you get a bit fascinated about where it could lead with such an interesting person who straight up attempts to find some meaning in the conversation. Now it's not always the case of course, not with all people and not with all depressed. It's also not uncommon that someone depressed would completely shut down and not even go in the conversation with someone who gives them the bad vibe - that you won't have a meaningful conversation where both of you walk out of it with more than you had, perhaps happier and having learnt something. In simple terms, with someone who they don't sync with. I feel like non-depressed are better at conversing with people they don't like. I think Lot offering his daughters was offering another great sacrifice to Lord. Similar to offering part of foreskin, something of you, was greater sacrifice than something that you own. Your daughters are part of you, and he was willing to sacrifice a massive part of himself to keep the pact with Lord sacred, to treat people and himself right. To save foreigners that sought shelter under his roof.

"Every man [and] child among you shall be circumcised." Peterson describes this as a sacrifice; a covenant bound in the memory of pain. However, I'm quite sure that infants do not recall the pain of circumcision, nor could they count it as their "sacrifice" of the flesh. It is the forced removal of a child's body part; an immoral and involuntary covenant. I contest that the removal of one's flesh is a decision that must be made by the individual, and not by an ideologically motivated parent.
@nathanielcowan7725
@nathanielcowan7725 7 лет назад
John Huckley people when men became Jewish, they were also circumcised. It was really a sacrifice for them. I used to think that I wasn't circumcised before I watched porn. I thought I would have to have that bit at the end cut off to be circumcised. Also, you can convert to Judaism today...and it does include the surgery. For peeps back then, it actually had health benefits...all of which could have been equally solved with a bar of soap.
@brain0nfire
@brain0nfire 7 лет назад
John Huckley Just because you can't recall doesn't mean it won't change you. It's a precocious load to make a baby stronger, by making him weaker so he has to try harder to survive. Reminds me of that ritual muslims do, they throw babies from a rooftop onto a sheet. It's a sort of leap of faith, and sacrifice you are putting on the hands of God so he decides the child's fate. That said, I'm not into this practice, which is not to say that it doesn't have an underlying value, though primitive and rough. But to be clear, I don't think these practices deserve a place in our modern culture.
@johnhuckley1843
@johnhuckley1843 7 лет назад
The idea that circumcision was performed for reasons of hygiene has already been debunked. In fact, it's even mentioned in this video at 27:13 Sem Nome, even if the infant did recall the experience of pain, it was still an involuntary covenant. A sacrifice doesn't really count unless its done voluntarily.
@brain0nfire
@brain0nfire 7 лет назад
John Huckley Well not to a God, but if you lift heavier weights your body will suffer more in order to become stronger. That's my only point. Creating "handicaps" can make you push harder, an intensity you wouldn't be able to withstand or accept without an imminent threat to scare the hell out of you so you run for your life.
@nathanielcowan7725
@nathanielcowan7725 7 лет назад
John Huckley keep in mind, the Jews also had rules for mold. Like taking it to the Teacher and based on the Teacher's decision you'd either leave it out in the sun or bun it. This was about spirits/disease/demons/fungi/angles/bacteria more or less because of the terms in which people understood things. . . Personally, I have alternate beliefs of just who the angles and gods were.

About transcendent you conversing with the transcendent of another man -- in the Hindu tradition, the gesture to greet someone (putting your palms together an lightly bowing before your counterpart) has a very specific meaning: "I bow before the god that is within you, and which is your final aim in the end of your cycle of reincarnations". I've been told this many times in India. I liked the idea....

The “three men” is a metaphor for accessing the trinity within. This is a map of the mind, not a historical tale. When the trinity is aligned/“snapped into place”, that’s when one can access god directly. I didn’t understand that until I experienced it myself. I started channeling these notes and diagrams about the trinity when I was studying alchemy, and it’s the same concept here. If you truly know alchemy, you’ll see there’s absolutely no denying that the Bible is another alchemical text in a sense.

After watching again, this time around I found very interesting (you can watch this 100 times and always find interest) was on the section where God tells Abraham that he will bless both he and his wife with a child. Although Abraham burst out in laughter @min 36:10 of the video text 17:17 God took not in offence, however when Sara also laughed @min 1:13:00 of text 18:12 God took offense. The difference being that Abraham bursts out in laughter in frint of the Lord and said in his his heart his disbelief that at the age of 100 and Sarah 99 to be with child. Sarah on the other hand laughed not in front of the Lord, but in secrecy, within herself saying her disbelief. Talk about laughing "with" and laughing "at", the quintessential difference between amusement and ridicule, sympathy and empathy, truth and dishonesty. And although God gives Sarah the opportunity to repent and confess her doubt, she doubles down thinking she outwitted the Lord thus cementing the denial of her arrogance. There is something to be said here about the faith of disbelief versus the doubt of superstition. In faith, the meek are humble to the hope of their disbelief, many hail to the degree of their foolery. But if not able to be so foolish as to quiet the doubt of your disbelief then all faith is killed by the arrogance of your doubt and all life is hopeless nothing more than the mere superstition, the accidental luck of the draw, the ideology of nihilism.
