1893 Chicago conference was attended from India, in addition to Swami Vivekananda, who represented Ancient Indian Religious Thought & Philosophy, by the Jain preacher Virchand Gandhi, Brahmo Samaj by Pratap Chandra Majumdar and Theosophical Society by the vice-president of the society, William Quan Judge and by activist Annie Besant. But, now Swami Vivekananda is only remembered as orator in that conference. Contributions of others have gone mainly unnoticed. By reading Kathamirata, I have felt that other disciples of Ramkrishna were mainly not in favour of proposal of social services by Swami Vivekananda, as Ramkrishna mainly talked about knowing God and not about social services through schools and hospitals. But, Swami Vivekananda was of view if they only talked about individual salvation and nothing else, society would not recognize them. Ma Sarada understood views of Vivekananda and provided support to create the organization. However, organization maintained safe distance from nationalistic movements at that time in order to avoid rubbing British Govt on wrong side.
