A "one of a kind" set of bubble lights made from what were originally Christopher Radko that had all the original bulbs burned out. I replaced the incandescent lamps with custom made LED modules and a small heating resistor to make the bubbles. The LED's are all cool white "top hat" style.

2023. Still no LED bubble lights to be had. I'm worried I won't live long enough to see these available. Someone out there is smart enough to pull this off.

You need to patent these! I am so looking for led bubble lights! Love them.

@Equus4Prowl That's why we have ebay.... You do need a 110V adaptor though, or if you're technical you can change the internal lamps.

Is that resistor dropping the current to the LEDs? With 7 LEDs in series the resistor would still be dropping 90V on a 110V supply. Even at just 10mA that's still almost a watt of power.

Fantastic. I wish you were my neighbor so I could have you whip up a set for me. I Have an original set from 1948 and now I am having to replace light bulbs and having to modify the plastic to make new bulbs fit into the sockets. It is working but the bad thing about old bubble lights is they burn HOT! This is a great idea.

Hey Gary. You know I love bubble lights. This guy really knows what he's talking about. I never knew what was in the vials that allow it to bubble. I'm still going to try and stick with the incandescent bulbs. Is it getting hard to replace these? I haven't looked into that for a while as I still have several sets to cannibalize bulbs from.

I made a great discovery over the weekend. Frequently bubble lights will have trouble starting to bubble. So, how to get them to bubble? It is quite easy: Let the bulb warm up for 4 or 5 minutes until some of the other bulbs have started to bubble. Unscrew the one that isn't bubbling and hold it with the glass tip pointing down for about 15 seconds. Once you turn it back up, it will bubble like crazy. Then just screw it back in to the socket! I suspect it is because they don't get quite hot enough and the fluid just swirls. When you turn it upside down, the hot bulb heats up just the glass bottom of the tube making it very hot compared to when the liquid was in contact! I got two strings of these at JC Penny last year after Christmas. They were *way* too expensive at full price. It is very nice that you can change the bulbs when they burn out. They look quite nice and work well.

the resistors use more power than incandescent lamps.

This is surpassingly cool. An added advantage of this setup is that since it undoubtedly runs cooler than the original lighting, the plastic in the lamps will last a lot longer. I just wish I had the electronics skills to do something like this myself; I've got lots of dead antique bubble lights that I'd love to bring back to life.

Note at this point bubble lights can be relamped with LEDs, a number of which can be purchased on Amazon and elsewhere. You just need to make sure the LED is 2 watts in order to generate enough heat. It should also be less than ~1.9" long in total (for Radkos) and E12 base. The electrical foot contact of the bulb can be extended with solder if needed. Lastly, since LEDs are much brighter, you can adjust the brightness by wrapping whichever parts of the bulb in electric tape to block some of the excess light if desired. The Radkos look amazing in LED and its worth the time and effort if you love bubble lights!

@@dancox3251 Did you do this yourself? Are there any photos or videos anywhere to show the final result and/or process to switch the bulbs to LED? I'm very interested in doing this, but would love to learn more about it first. So far this RU-vid video is all I've been able to find regarding switching to LEDs. I also found someone who mentioned that bulbs should be 5-7 watts (he was referring to standard incandescent bulbs), so I'm surprised a 2 watt LED produces enough heat!
@dancox3251
@dancox3251 Год назад
@@DavidWavid Indeed I did. 6 strands worth. The only thing I'd tweak from my original recommendation is to find _white_ electrical tape (a minor aesthetic nuance). 2 watts is enough (I tested multiple wattages) but it might take a little longer to get to bubble temp vs. higher wattages. I've also tested this in several bubble night-lights. 2 watts is the key (minimum). Make sure the tube touches the bulb (I put a dab of glue on the bottom of the tube when inserting for maximum heat transference) for fastest effect (conductive heat transfer being most effective). At the moment I write this it is 107 degrees here in TX, so this is far from my mind but as I can recall through my presently melting brain it just took a few mins from power-on to get to bubble with 2 watts :). The lighting effect is the same as shown in this video. Amazing !

Chris. I just did my annual search to see if there are LED bubble lights available this year. Looks like you're still the Lone Ranger. If you don't plan on patenting or marketing this, could you at least include a parts list and instructions so that non-electrical folks like me could make a set? Like many, I love bubble lights, but have quit putting any incandescent lights on my tree because of fire hazard as the tree dries out. I bet I'm not the only one who would send you 5 bucks for a parts list, where to purchase the parts, and a set of instructions. Tim

Hi Chris, somebody posted this link on my Facebook Xmas page, ( we have just over 4 thousand members now ) anyway, wow ! It would be awesome if you posted a little video of these again, maybe with them off, so we can see the circuit board and the LEDs you put on it. The circuit board looks like something you cut with pliers perhaps ? from a larger circuit board so it would fit into the base of the bubble lights. Would super love to see this ! as would many others. I see a lot of comments there you have never answered which is a pity. Answering comments keeps a video alive and gives your video more views, as more people tend to talk about it. Anyway amazing, I am impressed with your handy work Chris !

LEDs produce enough heat to boil the ether? Oh, you are cheating using a resistor. Clever. Yes full wave bridge rectifier makes them much better - and appearing brighter than if just 30 illuminations/second. Need to find the liquid which made much bigger, fewer, slower bubbles.
