OK, it's done! For this DIY project I used FastLED library running on an Adafruit Circuit Playground with 5 short LED strips to make my own fire display. The trickiest part was getting just the right light diffusion that didn't look like a bunch of LEDs being random.
In a way, distance from the LEDs is the most important aspect. So i started with a layer of bubble wrap. On top of that - and because i'm cheap - i placed some of those opaque shopping bags that are everywhere, scrunching here and there to help seem random. The top layer is Pelon Flex Foam giving it a strange pillow-like surface.
Kinda also looks a bit like fireworks and smoke, but I'm pretty pleased with the result and will be putting it out front of my noise table on the Deviled Cookie Nightmare on July 11th in Asheville as TOYBOX and I perform as Nightmare of Noise at The Odd.
Next time, the sound of a crackling fire!
