In this episode, I talk about how the Prolycht Orion 300 FS’s Hyperlight light engine is an evolutionary step forward for film and video production.
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnlightandsound.com including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. Great video. Whenever I looked at Yongnuo or other really cheapo brands that score relatively high in some reviews, the shot more often than not looked dead to my eye. I have a Falconeyes panel that on a white wall looks almost a bit green in direct comparison but when you light something with it, it looks more alive, more true and produces richer tones. I also have two Aputure panels (one small, one tiny) and those are visibly way better too. So when looking for recommendations for lights I mostly rely on educated eyes instead of sensors and charts. Same with cameras, flashes, lenses... There's always more to it than what I understand and more often than not even more than what most "reviewers" are capable of.

Very interesting Curtis. We have been in touch with Prolycht since the original Orion and basically wanted to see when the product (the original one and now apparently this one) will fix all the early small problems (especially the fan noise - which I believe is actually one of the changes made to the new FS model). Regardless - we have been working on an article on the C-800 (funny that GU published his look just a week ago - we have been working on ours for several months), what I really appreciate about this video is that you mention that even SSI and TM-30 are not really foolproof ways of testing light quality. What we might do - since we work commercially on food photography, is to try and compare this light against actual daylight - I am not sure how this will look (maybe doing this comparison will be more complex than I currently think) but if not it could be interesting.

Hey Mr. Judd. I have a question. I asked The Wandering DP host and he said Hollywood DP's always shoot in LOG , even in low light situations. I have a Panasonic S5, how would I expose in LOG in a low light, very dark night scene? I have heard you should properly expose, then I heard you should overexpose by +1or +2. But you can't overexpose a night scene. So how do we expose properly for the scene in LOG without getting noisy footage and what is the best metering tool to use because I find histograms useless when judging exposure at night.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Hi Josh, I don't have an S5 so I don't know the particulars of exposing for V-Log on that particular camera. But this is how I do it for the GH5: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZRc0tOTBWuw.html

Thank you Curtis. I have found with my lights that even when colour temperature matches camera, it often looks slightly out so I inevitably end up tweaking in post to try to get black to look a neutral black and whites to a nice clean white. Just tiny shifts in colour. I get similar with noise figures on microphones. If the figures are to be believed, I find sometimes that a mic quoted at a lower noise level shows more noise than one with a higher figure! All I can think of is either matching the preamp or the noise itself is at a frequency that is less noticeable.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Hi Ian, Many lights don't actually produce light at their reported color temp. In my tests, it is not unusual for them to be 500 degrees kelvin off. That might be part of the issue. But the overall spectral output is, of course, another factor. With microphones, specs are also tricky. Some manufacturers seem less than fully honest or evidently manufacture their microphones with rather wide tolerances. With the higher end microphones, they often include at least a frequency response chart for YOUR copy of the microphone. And they don't pass QA on mics which are too far out of the various specs. That's part of what one pays for with the more expensive microphones. Also, some of them don't apply a-weighting to or their microphones generate noise outside of the A curve. There are a lot of factors...

Hi Curtis. I just have to ask this, but has RU-vid done something to the video, as what I see is something really odd with the colour. The best way that I can describe it is that there's almost a posterisation effect starting to occur (the best way that I can explain what I'm seeing), especially in the skin tones. Everything looks sort of flat and almost losing structure. I've watched the video on several monitors and it's the same.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Not sure, Australian Image. Quite possibly. It isn't a super contrasty shot - I've kept the skin tones at about 55 IRE so there aren't any specular highlights or pretty much anything above 55 IRE in the talking head shots.

Aputure looks better online. Difference is negligible. But maybe that is due to compression or it’s your editing. Fans louder, is a relevant issue. Which is the better build? Which is more user friendly in day to day use.?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
I used the exact same LUT for both and kept everything the same for each shot except for the light. Very possible that RU-vid compression washes out most of the difference. Definitely more red tones in the skin in the original clip Aputure shot which is not true to life. Whether it looks better or worse is largely subjective.

now if we can get people to add an LED for the deep blue , say 420 nm we would get better daylight scores as well as better blues in general. The build quality was a little shaky, and it was from a brand that I had never heard of, however, the 675 caught my eye. I am still concerned about how strong the Yoke is, but I am sold on the 6 color engine. I also like that there is no ballast or power supply. Everything is built into the head. One more thing... Hey Curtis, please look at your video on a good, calibrated monitor, or even on a recent Macbook Pro display. Your LUT is EXTREMELY crushing the highlights (pet peeve of mine as a 10 year experience gaffer). Impossible to actually see quality of light with that. Maybe the reason why your comparison looks pretty much the same, and not supporting your statements. I have experienced a number of DP's that grade their own stuff, having results like that, which I suspect is due to not having a reference image to compare to, viewing conditions, hardware, and settings, or others being afraid to tell them as to not undermine getting hired or recommended for future gigs (being guilty of that myself) Your skin, model skin is pale, yet it lacks the natural highlights / rolloff that would occur, and lacks dimension. Especially considering the color rendering focus of your review, you omitted the "freshness" feature, or the tech behind that. Do a still shot with a Canon SLR with the default color setting of your scene, and compare on a decent monitor on a Mac, and maybe you will see the difference, and/or test with one of the default baked-in settings on the camera. A real scene with a whole range of natural (fruit?) colors, unique, deep, or neon color textiles, as well as a completely neutral scene with a full range of tones and contrast, would also help. If possible, show very dark black skintone, as well as olive and Asian skintone.

Sigh. This was honestly quite a frustrating watch. I know this is from almost a year ago - I hope your testing methodology has changed. Your relative gauge for SSI values are correct, as well your conclusion that test shots are most important. But if a test like this doesn't have a reference like an actual tungsten or daylight shot, it's really difficult to take anyone's word for it that something looked more accurate to a subjective viewpoint. Otherwise, any discussion of metric numbers, like in this case, falls flat...
