I've had this album in a number of formats from vinyl, 8track. Cassette and cd. Since about 72 I guess. I would have been 16 I guess. Still play it regularly. And still gives me goosebumps. As do many of their songs

Fantastic reaction! I'm a lifelong composer and songwriter and a ranger and played in bands forever and a multi-instrumentalist and I fell in love with this song and Junior High and to this day it can still give me goosebumps. I love how this guy just feels like he's got to hit the road and he's got to go but then he's always brought back and then he's got to go and he's positive he's going to leave her but then he knows that he never can. It's so awesome. But anyway, you captured so much of this and also, I love the musicologist approach to this. Because that is exactly what I do. I if something is not an original song, I love to trace its journey. And even if it is an original song I want to hear it in context of what came before and what came after. It's a great way to approach this stuff. A perfect example is I love the first Aerosmith album very much. I love every song on it. But one of my favorites when I was in junior high that I just love to blast until my eardrums bled and we would dance around and play air guitar, is Walk the Dog. But if you look at the writing credit on the label, it says thomas, and not anybody from aerosmith. Well that was harder to find back in the day but now in modern times, it's very easy to look it up on RU-vid and I have put several of the Rufus Thomas songs on playlist because he was just such a fantastic performer and it just makes me respect Aerosmith even more that they would cover one of his songs.
Art and especially music is literally someone's artistic interpretation and portrayal of something passed on from one generation to the next. Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, The Animals all made music from other music but reimagined and refreshed for the times they were in... with their own creative signatures
Yes they did, & also all these years later, new people are becoming fans. Actually if not for Led Zeppelin adding to them, & making them a million times better, the majority of people would never hear them.
If LZ hadn’t made these songs massive hits, no one would care. Playing the cover compared to the original, as you so BEAUTIFULLY put it, the song doesn’t remain the same.
Music is meant to be shared, so I wouldn't put too much stock in people complaining about Zeppelin covering songs and yet so many of these songs were covered by a variety of other artists that no one ever complains about. Probably because these songs did not become as big as when Zeppelin did them. I'm not suggesting that they shouldn't give proper writing credits, which they have mostly, but to suggest that the original artists are somehow worse off because Zeppelin elevated this music to the masses is a bit disingenuous too. I became a big fan of blues and many of these artists because of Zeppelin not in spite of them. And I am sure that is the case with many Zeppelin fans too. It's what you bring to each of these songs that matters and Zeppelin brought quite a bit. I've never heard any of these original artists wish that Zeppelin never covered their music because here we are over 50 years later still listening to it. In the end it only matters if the music moves you and Zep definitely moves me.
Zeppelin actually did credit others at least half a dozen times. Just because they didn't always do it doesn't mean they never did it. Willie Dixon got almost 1/4 full writing credit for the first album. Never said a word of thanks to Zeppelin. Jimmy Page didn't complain when American Lowell Fulson stole his 1966 Yardbirds riff in Happenings Ten Years Time Ago for his later song Tramp. The old blues guys routinely took off others without credit.
This is my favorite song of all time! And I can see you love it as much as I do. It goes from slow to fast from low to loud and gives off so much emotion! You explain it so well. Going from the first song that was the original through all the versions it is amazing how Led Zeppelin turned it into a masterpiece!
To be clear, they did give credit for this song in the original pressings from 1969. They had heard Joan Baez’s version, and she attributed it to “traditional”; Led Zeppelin did the same. No one knew that Anne Breton was the original author except Janet Smith. It was only by chance that Janet Smith heard the Zeppelin version, and made the connection to Anne Bredon. There was no deception or sleight of hand here.
This is my favorite led Zeppelin of ever and only now i discover its a cover of old crappy songs but it dosent matter because they made it their own turning it in a wonderfull led Zeppelin song ! It was ALWAYS credited as "trad" (traditional). Though. Zeppelin never gave themselves writing credit for it when the first album came out in 1969. Jimmy Page only gave himself credit for the arrangement.

Everyone knows the stealing story of Led Zeppelin (or would like to think they do) just as everyone knows the songs they "borrowed" were nothing like the originals, which is why I particularly like your video. My take on it is as follows: If you don't know anything about music you stand in the street and shout about how Zeppelin stole this or stole that because you enjoy having something to shout about, indeed it may be said that it gives purpose, righteousness and perhaps authority to a person that has none, though they have probably never listened to a Led Zeppelin album in their life but artistic creativity does not matter because they just want something to shout about. They will never mention the countless original pieces because it does not suit them or their agenda of having A purpose and also because they have almost certainly never heard them. Such could be applied to any person or organisation that seeks change according to their own personal belief system without regard to others, the pattern is clear. Babe, for me, is their greatest song and their most powerful portal, one of many, it changed my life and perception in ways that cannot be expressed in words. I wish you good luck on your journey.

That song is tradition which means they really don't know who originally recorded it that's why everybody has done a version there's many songs that are traditional
Zeppelin has 90 studio tracks. 10 are covers or contain references from other artists. Of those 10, only 4 didn’t initially have writing credits. Of those 4, 2 were just mashups of blues standards (common in blues music) and rarely ever were credited by past artists. The other two were Dazed and Confused and Babe I’m Gonna Leave You. Babe I’m Gonna Leave You was initially listed as “traditional” by both Joan Baez, LZ and others who covered it. It wasn’t until all artists were contacted by Anne Brendon who was the original author that they added her to credits. Dazed and Confused was the only instance where they 100% should have listed credits but for some reason didn’t. I’ve heard explanations that so much of the song was changed that it couldn’t even be labeled a cover. Whatever the reason may be, they should have listed Jake Holmes in the credits. Stairway to Heaven was 100% not a cover. They weren’t even sued by the band in question, but by the band’s estate. The estate claimed that the opening arpeggio was taken from a Spirit track called Taurus. The court ruled twice in favor of LZ because arpeggios are public domain, there are dozens of other songs that contain the exact same arpeggio including one from the Beatles. The arpeggio itself is over 300 years old. This case was an absolute money grab.
Pink Floyd also is a good money opportunity, but never heard that they were sued for things like LZ, you know what I mean. There are some huge bands, who wrote 100%. You know what I mean.
@@IYOU Pink Floyd is also not a traditional Blues and Folk band by background, they’re 99% psychedelia. But bands like The Rolling Stones and Zeppelin were inspired by Blues and Folk music, which is all about interpretation. Covering music and referencing other work is a long time blues tradition. Blues music goes beyond lyricism, it’s about feel and what you bring to it. Virtually all of the British blues-rock bands of the late 60s (Cream, Hendrix, Stones, Peter Green’s FM, Bluesbreakers, etc.) covered material and yes, sometimes without giving credit. Even the second wave blues greats like BB King, Albert King, and Muddy Waters covered music from first wave greats (sometimes without crediting). They weren’t “stealing” they were paying homage to their influences. In the end, out of Led Zeppelin’s 10 covers or referenced tracks, all have been credited since the late 80s with back proceeds given to original artists. Music Copyrights were almost nonexistent prior to the 90s, LZ gets vilified for doing what everyone did because of the proportion of royalties.

@@IYOU I mean calling a band the best ever is subjective. I love pink floyd, especially any album before Waters left. I wouldn’t argue against anyone claiming the Beatles, Floyd, or Zeppelin being the best ever. No one else achieved what those three accomplished in my opinion, and they were all “progressive” at certain points of their careers. But of those three, Zeppelin is really the only heavily Blues influenced band. The Beatles were to some extent as well (and have also been sued several times for cover credits). But Floyd was never really the type of band that did covers, it just wasn’t their thing. Again, music copyrights weren’t really well established prior to the 90s. Covers were very common with music from 70s, especially for blues influenced bands.
IYOU Pink Floyd had seven mediocre albums full of crap and filler before Dark Side of the Moon. They literally have lots of "meh" songs. Nowhere near Zeppelins level, sorry. Led Zeppelin are the greatest rock band ever. There I said it. 😝
I play guitar in a duo that covers this song as a mashup with the acoustic piano version (I have to do it on guitar) of Bad Romance. I loved you pulling the Janis Joplin album out -- there is a legend that I believe is verified as true, that there was a published music review, I want to say in Washington state in U.S., of the first Zeppelin song that got air-play there, where the reviewer called Zeppelin's lead singer the "best female vocalist" since Janis Joplin.

I think the thing i love most about Zeppelin is that they can make an electric song sound so smooth and easy going and an acoustic song so heavy and powerful. They could switch everything up with such ease and make it sound so natural.
And the subtle suspense of listening to the beautiful flowing guitar all the while knowing not far away Robert is crooning and the girls will be swooning..

The funny thing is, this was one Zeppelin never claimed they wrote. It was credited as "trad(traditional):arranged by Jimmy Page" right from the first pressings of the first album in 1969. So they didn't credit it to themselves. They didnt know who wrote it so just did what Joan Baez did and called it "traditional". When Ann Bredon came forward in the 1980s and proved she wrote it, Zeppelin didn't complain or try to get out of it. They gave her credit as well as back royalties. She thus made a fair amount of money off the back of Zeppelin.
Good example of other side of the coin, cuz - the truth is her version wouldn’t ever bring her much, she even didn’t record it appropriately, and they LZ did super amazing transformation (with Baez version of course). So, I would say in this particular case songwriter took advantage of the band, even tho maybe they wouldn’t be poorer from this share
Joseph Janick Well none of the other cases went to court either. Zeppelin didn't argue against any of them. They said fair enough and they paid up. The only exception was Spirit with Stairway to Heaven. Zeppelin quite rightly argued against that and they won that case. Twice.
Every song from the live concert from Madison Square Garden 1973. The song remains the same has got to be watched. Zep did not steal Stairway to Heaven.....the estate of the artist who claimed this lost the case a few years ago. It was a hugely important victory for ALL artists. The song had a 7 second chord progression in the middle of it......a similar chord progression used in over 20 hit songs, including Stairway, over the years, and used in many other songs that were not hits. If Zep had lost that case then it would have been open season for countless artists and their music. Descending D progression, as another example, could be used as a copyright on literally hundreds of songs. It would destroy the music industry. There is a HUGE difference between stealing and using a piece of music as a jumping off point. Musicians call it stealing as a shorthand for inspiration. And every song Zep used by another artist they did give them a writing credit and did pay up when the song in question came out of the public domain and back into the copyright estate of the artist. So many mouth-breathing morons cry foul on this issue and have no idea what they're talking about.

Stairway to Heaven is not a cover, nor was it "borrowed." Not even close. Listen to Taurus's version, and Page's. There were four basic notes in question, and those four notes are universal as a basic ascending pattern in A-minor. None of the rest of Stairway bears any resemblance to Taurus's song. Multiple courts heard and dismissed the case, and now it's over, once and for all. Please stop perpetuating this false narrative.
@@gunna4x168 There is no "main lick" in Stairway. It's not like Immigrant Song, Heartbreaker, or WLL. The opening acoustic section is not a lick, it's a fairly lengthy progression, nearly all of which differs from anything that came before it, as does the rest of Stairway's eight-plus minutes running time. Otherwise, those opening notes? Good luck copywriting those, since that A-minor ascending pattern goes back hundreds of years in western music. In fact, Taurus themselves didn't create it. They were just as guilty as Zeppelin was of borrowing that pattern. It's a universal series of notes, which multiple appellate courts correctly concluded.
This is definitely the greatest version of this song. Never knew it went through that many incarnations. Also this is not the first time Led Zeppelin has revamped a song. A while back I heard they were getting sued by someone over rights to "Stairway to Heaven". Don't recollect what became of that case. Yes I know "Google" but right now we ate studying this particular song. Besides it's not as if Jimmy Page or Robert Plants going to give me royalties. Seems like YOU did a review of the Great White version but not sure. Led Zeppelin was in a way ahead of it time in that this song was like an Mtv unplugged. Very informative review today. That original was a very rough one ,it sounded like she really was not vocally in the melody very much but I reckon that was her style ..Joan took it much farther and similar in the way Smith made it ,,those two are good .. Zep took it to the highest level and I don't think it can ever be outdone .. Good comparison of Janis Joplin and Robert ,I think he dialed into her style and especially a lot on Psychical Graffiti ..
@@SEKreiver She was popular before Zep came out ..She had a pretty big hit in 1967 and in 68 she hit it big with Piece of My Heart" and in 69 the Comic Blues album was a huge seller also..

I assume that you know that we have recordings of Robert all the way back to 1966. As I said, much of his style (heavily influenced by Howlin' Wolf) was already in place before he could've heard Joplin.
@@SEKreiver I meant that she came out before ZEP with Big Brother band and was established as famous before Zep was......Sure Robert had many influences before Janice but I think he channeled her a bit more as time went by and especially after she died in 1971 ..Black Dog has her vibe very much in that and Physical Graffiti ,it is like she is all over that album with his vocal style ..They briefly met somewhere along the way and Robert talked about her ..There are too many coincidences and I understand the Wolf influence but he still had that Janis vibe going very strong .. ..
I don't know why artist gets so mad. OK those other artists that covered that song never heard their names anywhere till now. Now if a band takes a song that they do changes it to their interpretation a bit. Or Does it Justice or makes it even better the original artist To take that as a compliment. Well, if you re running 100m as a world record, no one would complain you don't have the rights on 100m. They might check time and conditions! If they create their own thing, it is their right 8f composition or it becomes their own, I think!
Interesting that you compare Robert Plant and Janis Joplin...I think Plant was more controlled, more folky, more English, whereas Joplin is more bluesy, more unrestrained. But yes there are similarities when they really let go the emotion as in this song
Best version of this song is the live performance on Danish radio in 1969. I agree with the Janis comparison. The emotion is real and intense for both singers.

A lot of them didn't care but Zeppelin was not Atlantic Records, it was their job to post inspired by or give artists credit(s) for any song or parts of songs used, mostly words but other than that, they transformed those songs and brought them to light, otherwise, sadly.... nobody would have even known them ...... it's great to be able to hear originals and Zepprlin's versions !!!!

they were sued because they were making boatloads of money. very few of the other artist who remade or took parts of other songs were ever sued. they were even sued by the inventor of the lighter than air ship over using the name "Led Zeppelin". for a brief time shortly after they formed zeppelin was known as "The Knobs" and then after the lawsuit was settled the switched back to Led Zeppelin. It's crazy what people will do for money. Case in point John Fogerty (lead singer/songwriter and guitarist) of the band Creedence Clearwater Revival was once sued for sounding too much like himself.
Absolutely. Willie Dixon didnt go after The Small Faces. The Small Faces far more blatantly took from You Need Love, including the music. They never credited Dixon. Not much money to be made by going after The Small Faces so he didn't bother. Nothing to do with integrity.
Although Joan's voice is at least tolerable, the 1st 4 versions are horrible if we are being honest. I recognize a few lyrical similarities, and that's about it, period!
What you are leaving out about Zeppelin stealing songs, is that's how the Blues was passed around at that time. Most of the so called stolen songs were by the time of Zeppelin public domain, most of the songs nobody really knew who wrote them.
