LED ZEPPELIN LANDS! My Review Of Led Zeppelin’s 1st Album, ‘LED Zeppelin’!
And not just that is covered in tonight’s video! I cover many different aspects of how they recorded the album, as well as each and every member’s development at this crucial stage in the band’s career!
Who was the most insecure member of the band? Who carved one song into a ‘timeless’ classic? Who was Glyn Johns? Where did Jimmy Page get his wonderful fuzz effects?
The answers to those questions and more are all covered in this video!
Hope you enjoy!

I want to add that John Paul Jones ,even as a teenager, was a session musician. At 18, 18! John wrote the orchestra arrangements to LuLu's "To Sir with Love."

I had seen this album on the shelves when it first came out. The cover definitely caught my attention. A few weeks later a friend comes over to my house with a copy. “You have got to hear this!” He said. The first 10 seconds of cut 1 was all I needed to hear. Practically wore out my first copy, and bought a second copy. In 1972 I bought the British import pressing. Still have it. It sounds great to this day. It is one of those albums that you can’t just listen to one track. You will listen to the whole album. One of my favorites. Great video.

Great review. My mouth was watering to hear those songs as he spoke about them in the first 5 minutes. Led Zeppelin I is my favorite album of all time. I’m surprised Michael didn’t spend more time on Dazed and Confused. In my opinion Page’s solo on that song is one of the greatest of all time. Of course music is art and not everyone feels the same emotions about certain songs/music, etc. I’ve seen Zep three times. The first time was at the LA Forum center stage, five rows back in 1972 or 73 I believe. The best concert I’ve ever seen.

If you want to get an idea of the true extent of John Paul Jones' talents, it might interest you to know that he arranged the strings on the Rolling Stones' She's a Rainbow. The interplay between Jones' strings and Nicky Hopkins' Piano (another studio musician) is outstanding--a true rock and roll highpoint. Check it out.

I have to say that it's hard for millenniums to understand 70's albums bcz they were not there. I'm turning 60 in a few months, but I remember our household had tons of albums. Spanish, pop, rock, soft, etc. We had every genre of music including Led Zeppelin's first album. which at that time probably the heaviest album, hands down. I remember staring at the band photo on the back side of the album while listening to the album and it was truly a super excellent album! I still love it to this day.

@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine what did you think of Aurora and the Massive Attack song? I locked on to MA (and to a lesser extent Portishead) because I love the hypnotic, trance like flavor of trip-hop and the Bristol Sound of the 1990’s. Also allot of world music influences in Bristol sound. Fun fact: Robert Plant collaborated with musicians from Portishead (among others) when he formed his band Strange Sensations in early 2000’s to make a blending of trance and North African rhythms and instruments on his album Mighty Rearranger. Another great video . Glen Johns said this was probably the best album ever recorded, he said it only took a couple of weeks to record. I think he also said Page was prepared in the studio which made this a pleasure. He committed on Steve Miller being so disorganized he was going to walk out . But this Zeppelin album was a pleasure to work on. My favorite albums would probably have to be in order 1-2-3 they were bold and rough artistic bluesy . Then graffiti then 4 -5-presence . There were 3 Zeppelin. Periods 1-3 then 4-5-6 then 7-8-coda. All 3 were great in there own way . But 1-3. Were the solid blues rock acoustic. Then the polished epic period then the dinosaurs all the way through innovation style rough and ready playing on top of their game , IMHO

I'm glad you made specific reference to the sound of the drums on "I Can't Quit You Babe". I've been a drummer for 40 years so I'm always paying particular attention to how "real" they sound in recordings - whether they're over compressed or muted in some way. It's sad when they don't let the ambient sounds of a percussive instrument ring out in all its natural glory. So at the 1:52 mark of that song when Bohnam switches over to the ride and you hear the whole kit open up, that's why the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I feel like I'm sitting on the drum throne myself listening to it just as it sounded to John and anyone standing in the booth at the time. It's just the most glorious drum sound I've ever heard.

I bought this album in my first term at university in 1969. At that time it was the only Zeppelin album released. Perhaps as a result it has always been my favourite. At the age of 19, putting it on the turntable and playing it loud was a life changing event for me. I wonder if you are aware of the Classic Records edition released in limited quantity in about 2006 (?)? This was a monster box which was almost too heavy to lift with one hand. Every album was included, Coda as well. All were pressed on 200 gm vinyl at 45 rpm. And each disc was only pressed on one side to ensure total flatness and stability. As a consequence some discs contained only one track. (In my time of Dying for example). Once you've heard Dazed and Confused in this format you are changed forever!!! The resolution and weight of the sound are unequalled. I don't know whether you also know a piece of trivia on that first release? On the rear of the sleeve the track timings were included. But the timing listed for Dazed and Confused was wrong. There is a point in the track where there is a long pause before the long coda kicks in. Whoever was noting the track timings seems to have assumed that pause was the end and clicked his stopwatch then. Imagine my joy to discover that the track was 15 minutes long not about 8 minutes! I'd be interested to know whether anyone else who bought the first release in the UK noticed this.

Great video about my favorite music genius! Roger Mayer is the gentleman who was a navy admiralty electronics whiz that befriended Jeff, Jimmy and also Jimi. Page being a session guy, he probably had all the different Vox or Sola Sound Tone Bender fuzzes that had been available, probably a few of those with modifications from Roger Mayer. He probably had a fuzz face and a mosrite too. I wouldn’t even put it passed Jimmy having fresh and old batteries on hand for his Germainium fuzzes when recording the first Zeppelin album. Some of that can’t be left to luck and chance. I’m also now a very firm believer that Page was an early pioneer (even if secretly) of re-amping signals. I’m quite certain some of his guitars and even some vocals on LZ1, were somehow sent back into his Supro amp (and or direct into the console) for extra gain, girth and even sometimes other effects. Listen very close to Roberts’ vocal on You Shook Me, sometimes it seems there’s almost parallel process guitar amp Tremelo being used to add excitement. Notably on Roberts’s scream at 1:54 on You Shook Me, he sustains a note but doesn’t add vocal vibrato. That warbling on his voice sounds like an amp tremelo to me!
@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine
@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine 2 года назад
I agree with everything you say here! Especially rerouting Robert’s vocals and further sound & signal enhancements! And jimmy knew all the trick day one with LZ! UK band the Creation’s guitarist Eddie Phillips predates Jimmy Page with the usage of guitar and violin bow. 2 examples are tracks from 1966 called Making Time and Painter Man. I’m not certain though as to whether Page used this technique before 1966 or whether he was actually aware of what Phillips was doing beforehand , but I’m quite sure it was the Creation who were the first band to release a record using a guitar and bow. Is Led Zeppelin's debut album the best debut album in rock history? Jimmy did a lot of "Borrowing" from other artist's in the past. half the material are not their songs, but the actual songs Jimmy wrote for the album were fantastic! I think he might have done this because he did not have any new material ready, and he just wanted to launch Zeppelin as soon as he could... I don't know, just a theory.

I'd listen to a lot of live led Zeppelin concerts on RU-vid and he's either always dropping the pics and playing with his fingers or he just doesn't put any studio quality solos into them even Van Halen said the same thing and they went to see led Zeppelin twice according to a documentary and yeah.. they said the same thing, Jimmy Page sucks live and I agree.
