Led Zeppelin - No Quarter (Original Solo live from Madison Square Garden 1973) [REMASTERED]

Taking the 2018 Remastered Mix from The Song Remains the Same and inserting the full solo section from the original 1976 release of the album of the same name. I've also intercut some vocals from both versions, using the "...path where no one goes" from the 2018 mix as it removed some of Robert's voice cracks, then transitioning into vocal sections I prefer from the 1976 release. All and all it's a bit of a hodgepodge of my favorite parts of both versions, so I hope you enjoy! There's a slight change in quality as the only source of the original solo I was able to get access to was another RU-vid upload ( • Led Zeppelin - No Quar... ).

He’s a Goddamn Wizard. He, Bonham and John Paul Jones orchestrate literal magic when the icon himself, Robert Plant, steps away. Than they take you on a mystical, occult like journey. Transcendent in its entirety. I mean, I personally don’t believe it, but I don’t deny peoples beliefs who truly think they sold their souls to some dark entity. There’s just something about the music that’s so mystical.

I keep telling it is maybe his best solo and that's a real pity that Jimmy Page cut parts of it on the new remaster... but I then read that it was the same on the video, which I got to discover 10 years later than the live album, but I had not noticed when watching it... I didn't listen /view it so often, compared to the double LP but still, I watched it a few times and i felt ashamed not to have noticed the difference before, while I noticed it immediately when i listened to my newly bought remastered double CD....

Whoever said this is the greatest band to ever stand on the stage was not lying. Nothing has ever even come close to what Led Zeppelin did. Led Zeppelin at its worst was head and shoulders above everything else around them. Jimmy played a very brilliant part in this song, but the composition belongs to John Paul Jones. The song was recorded in D minor and showcases John Paul Jones’s classical roots…nothing can or ever will come close to this band again….. John Paul Jones was the icing on top of the Led Zeppelin cake. His multi instrumental abilities put that band above everything around them. What would going to California be without the mandolin? What would no quarter be without the incredible keyboard playing? What wood in through the outdoor be with without Jones on the synthesizer? What would the rain song be without Jones on the mellotron? To this day, everything else runs second place to Led Zeppelin.

As soon as Jimmy starts noodling 12 bars before the lead solo begins is hair-raising ( literally) in anticipation of what's about to come! If you haven't listened to this with a set of really good studio style headphones turned all the way up then you are missing out on the hypnotic way all of them came together for those brief few moments in time where everything and everyone were as 1 and Jimmy let loose with probably the best solo he's ever done live that was recorded ! I've heard another recordings of this song òn bootlegs and none of them were as tight and grabbed me like this did ! The opening notes of the lead just reached out and grab you and its just on an crackin' from there. At the 12:45 mark to me anyway is when Jimmy wasnt thinking he was just playing and he held nothing back from there til the end of the solo !! Fucking amazing ! I'm glad I was around to witness this rare look at JP offering his best stuff to us all

The solo is mind blowing but I think what makes Page historically great is the way he plays the whole song - his sense of dynamics, his fills and the way his riffs, chords and solos flow dynamically is in my opinion paints the most complete picture in all of rock history. As much as I love the solo I’m blown away at the climactic riff at the end the way he plays a really fast flurry of notes with the wah and just flows into the main riff. He and the band had a genius for creating the most dramatic effect. That’s just so Jimmy Page!

His lines are infinite, and he plays so freely. He doesn't aim for _perfection_ , he aims for _expression_ ... When you watch him play it doesn't look like he's playing a guitar, it looks like he's painting a picture. It's like this crazy mixture between harmony cacophony at the same time. A much more realistic expression of the human condition imo. No of this fake ass pre-rehearsed rudiments and scales. Just a clear window into his imagination and soul.

For me the best part of the song occurs between 3:30 and 6:00 where the song slows down almost completely and then slowly picks up steam again right before the guitar solo. Very true. There is something like the first movement of a symphony, sonata form. The theme plays for No Quarter. it crescendo's and dies down. And then there is a long period of development and finally it comes back to the start, another crescendo, the climax and then dies away. Very much like the first movement of a Beethoven Symphony.

1976 and we were on a school bus trip to look at the bizarre landscape of the Burren in Co. Clare in the west of Ireland on a sunny May day and luckily one of the lads brought his portable stereo with him to blast this out along with the whole Song Remains the Same concert. What a day!

Arguably one of the greatest live solos in the history of live rock music. John Paul Jones is absolutely legendary, Page beyond words and Bonham in this moment is the greatest living drummer of his era. They should be getting kids to listen to this stuff in school. They are incredibly tight and perfectly playing together and the feel is beyond belief- magical!

They weren't always on their A game. It's important to remember that early raw Zeppelin were not as technically gifted in the later days, but what they did have was chemistry and even though material from the early days was more technically brilliant, the later the days got, the more the chemistry came through, flaws and all.
@danimaldann

as far as im concerned , this is the point where everything came together ...and this song exemplifies how they were truly im command of their art the dynamics , the emotional investment , the musical telepathy engaged ...almost every placement, nuance and articulation of the piece is performed as if it was charted , though we all know it was just that " tight but loose" chemistry that was inherent to them from the very first rehearsal . its pretty obvious to me , that they were at the top of their game here ...and no one was going to even come close . like watching brando ... , theres a reason deniro , pacino , etc all said he was the best ...and thats because he was literally building the templates of the new modern design of portrayal ....for all to build upon

@@johnjeczalik8960 Without a doubt. WLL and D and C versions on the original vinyl had amazing movements and changes, why were some lost? This No Quarter mixes back in the beautiful rhythm cords of JP playing to the melody of JPJ just before the solo. I was devastated when that was taken out of the CD

You lucky bastard. 🙂 I was born too late. Tried to see them for the '77 Presence tour when I was 14 or 15, but tickets sold out too fast on the same day as they went on sale and got shafted. Was nice to see Plant/Page, but no obviously no Bonham and JPJ.
