I was in love with this band and this song when I was in high school in the 70’s. I had a rock band that played some Zeppelin songs. I used to try to get adults into this music when I was 16 years old in 1977. It still blows me away and am thrilled you have discovered it. The sound you heard when you said “maybe the piano” was a Mellotron. It was an instrument that used physical tapes of other instruments and played them back with a keyboard. The first “sampler”, which was also used to play the flute sound in “Stairway to Heaven”.

He played it on a Mellotron from '73 to '75 when playing it live..After that he used a synth...He got roundly critiqued for his use (or misuse; I think it sounds good) of the Mellotron. Evidently not an easily understood instrument. The inner workings are very strange, to say the least...It certainly is different in every aspect, but amazing when used right...Again, it sounds good to me, here...Hard to knock JPJ's musicianship, any time. .

Helene here: His speaking voice is beautiful. Over the past year, once I discovered the wealth of them on RU-vid, I’ve listened to dozens of interviews with him...because I too find his voice calming and lovely. And we are not alone. It’s probably a gender thing, but you can see so many comments on Zeppelin platforms about Robert’s speaking voice. For your own pleasure, I would suggest that you just put Robert Plant interview in RU-vid.....you will get dozens......from the early days of 1970 or so...to present day. He is now 72, but his voice is still...........so lovely. Plus, he’s a great storyteller and a font of knowledge about music....blues, bluegrass, folk, North African and Middle Eastern......Niah, He has his own podcast calling Digging Deep, where he talks about the songs he has written and performed over his more than 50 year career. Since you love his voice, for your own personal journey, don’t forget that he has had a 40 year solo career after Zeppelin died. Look up on RU-vid the song Big Log....It was the first big success he had after he went out on his own..1982 I think......great song. Jimmy has a nice speaking voice as well....but only Robert’s can relax me so much it can help me sleep! Here is a link to a 1975 clip of Robert doing an interview. There are snippets of several songs included in the background, Stairway and a couple of others you haven’t reviewed, but not enough to “ruin” a future reaction at all, or I wouldn’t send it to you. Note the feather in his hair. Nice touch. The feather was Robert’s symbol. (As you get into Zeppelin more, you will discover that on Zeppelin IV, each band member developed a symbol for themselves. Robert, as the writer of the most of the lyrics, picked a feather) Anyway, here is a link to the interview. I hope that you follow it into your very own rabbit hole of listening to his lovely speaking voice. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1_Q-npi8EE8.html

I know cause I was there, Earl's Court. Right at back, but that was okay because you could hear everything. Hey Thelma - where's Scooby? i was 16 just and went with my brother. (also had my first drink and spliff) - don't tell mum ...lol. You won't feel sleepy at the end. They had very profound effect on many of the ladies in the audience, shall we say. We left and after a few days later when our hearing came back, we decided to form a band. We learnt every song they did in months. The melotron gives the string effect. Try some Prog next. The Immigrant Song, which you'll know when you hear it from movies, Dazed & Confused, Since I've been loving you, live from MSG. Achilles Last Stand. I now teach music and use Zeppelin as a case for power and synchronicity.

Again ANOTHER GREAT reaction. Thanks, thanks, thanks, This is one of my favorite LZ songs - definitely can take you somewhere away from the here and now. I have a real crush on all of them too. . . . .PROUDLY, I might add. The violin sound is coming from John Paul Jones (bassist/keyboardist) - for this 1975 concert it was played on something called a Mellotron - it's an electronic keyboard-like instrument that plays certain looped sounds - it's kinda like the ancestor of sampling today. LZ uses the Mellotron a lot. And the ending - Jimmy can do ANYTHING!!! Absolutely agree about Robert's voice and it is identifiable to me anytime anywhere. Helene, one of your commenters below, gave a great description of Robert and his voice. His interviews along with Jimmy's are all over youtube and one or 2 from JPJ, the bassist/keyboardist. Robert's had a great solo career after LZ and has given us more fabulous music. He and Jimmy Page toured in the 90s with Page and Plant No Quarter - "Unledded" with an live album of the same name. Original stuff plus they reworked many of LZ's songs in an acoustic way- so many of the performances as incredibly beautiful the incorporate orchestral strings and Middle Eastern musicians into many of the songs. Really wonderful. If you want the pristine greatness of this band I would suggest you do studio versions to get the experience of hearing what we all heard before we could ever hear it live with a Tour. The live versions are unique improvisations of the songs, each version it's own Masterpiece. The recorded version will give you the original sound and vibe, and continuity through the tune, and then when you see the live versions you can know where all the changes, and embellishments are. If you want the full force Zep I would say that The Lemon Song, and Heartbreaker/Livin Lovin Maid should sufficiently Melt You

You can't blame anybody for having a crush on these fellas. They're extremely not my type, but I certainly fell in love with the band and the music. And Jimmy's guitars... Oh mama.

The live version is good. You should listen to the studio version too. Also, watch the movie the song remains the same. It’s an amazing Led Zeppelin movie.

Do yourself a favor. There is a Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Led Zeppelin. The whole thing is about 22 minutes long, but will give you some much needed background on the band. It ends with Ann & Nancy Wilson of heart singing Stairway to heaven as the 3 remaining members of Zep watch. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. Plus the son of their deceased drummer is the drummer for Stairway. He wears his dads hat in tribute. RIP John Bonham.

Led Zeppelins record deal was unpressidented in that they had complete creative freedom to do exactly what they wanted

....a result of Jimmy Page's brilliance. He self financed the recording of the first album, and had the master tapes finished before signing a record deal. He leveraged his reputation as a Yardbird and the fact that the album was already recorded against his insistence that Zep always have creative control of everything from music to album covers to no singles. Sheer brilliance.

Here is something U need to do, (2 things actually); 1- watch the video of Led Zeppelin receiving their Kennedy Awards from the Kennedy Center; 2- watch & react to Heart doing "Stairway to Heaven" in front of Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center.. ♠W.G.

If you want to Robert’s speaking voice, check out his podcast “Digging Deep”. In another vein, you should also check out one of John Paul Jones’s projects, Them Crooked Vultures (with Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl on drums and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme on guitar & vocals).
