Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same | My First Reaction 

Nothing about this era originated from boredom. There was pure inspiration in the air from '64 through '94, in all genres. It was the pinnacle of popular music as we know it. I was born in '59 and thoroughly enjoyed it all. As much as I wish it would, it's not likely that the same level of inspiration will ever happen again in our lifetimes.

The balls it took to make this new style of rock right after their masterpiece Led Zeppelin 4. Again that is why Page is a legend.

Led Zeppelin songs are like fingerprints.

These guys weren’t board they were that good. They cranked out 5 all time classic multi platinum albums in 5 years. They had great chemistry and the stars aligned to give us the greatest band ever

You need to see them perform this live MSG 1973. Amazing performance. You will love it.

There is a concert film named The 'Song Remains the Same', it's an entire Led Zeppelin concert. It's been decades since I've seen it myself, but it may be what he was referencing. I like the drum riffs on Dyer Maker, because Bonham never repeats himself during the entire song and yet it works every time he does a riff in that song, somehow he times it perfectly.

I think Page was definitely the best songwriting guitarist out of all of the GOATS.

the live version of this that rolls right into the rain song from msg 73 is simply unbeatable! they all absolutelyt KILL it!! and then the rain song right after is just utterly beautiful!

Page is a great guitarist, writer and producer of most of their albums! He is a master musician!

When I saw Jimmy pull out a bow and start ripping notes on his electric guitar, I knew the dude was unmatched.

When he said that "The Song Remains the Same" is proof that he is the greatest guitarist ever, I think he meant the Led Zeppelin Movie, the live performance at MGS (The Song Remains the Same) Many legendary performances from that one live show

He really may have meant the film when it was referenced as proof of Jimmy's greatness.....The Song Remains the Same is the name of Zeppelin's concert film. I do love the studio version though. Good one!

After seeing LZ play this live 6 times I determined many yesrs ago that This is the greatest rock song ever recorded.....period!!

Houses of the Holy - Page's period of insane guitar overdubs. He literally created huge orchestral guitar parts. Could never be reproduced live. But Page always made up for that live with brilliant improvisations. And none of it would have been propelled into the galaxies without Jones and Bonham's powerful collaborations. A true ensemble piece.

Pages contributions to music will NEVER be matched by any other guitar player.

imagine coming of age when all this music was first coming out , it was called rock an roll and we thought it would last forever , it was our norm. born in 55 and i can honestly say , it was the best time to be alive and we never knew it , if you wanted to be known in those times you had to rise to this level or higher .

The live version from the album of the same name may be the most explosive rock guitar playing ever. You gotta hear it, especially paired with The Rain Song. The pinnacle of rock music.

The crazy thing about Page is that he’s almost as good a producer as guitarist. He always knew what sounds worked.

Love this performance and I am a huge Zeppelin fan growing up as a teenager in the 70's. They were just all so talented and creative and JPJ never got the attention he deserved. He's the silent magician in the background that kept it all together IMHO. With that said and I'm a Jimmy Page fanboy bar none, check out Jeff Beck's Live at Ronnie Scott's concert or just listen to his albums Beck-Ola, Truth or Blow by Blow and then think about who's up there as the greats of that era. Beck, Page and Clapton. You can't go wrong.

Glad you correctly shouted out to the "gorgeous" bassline here. Some of JPJ's best bass work since the second album in this song.

When i was a kid I pulled this album out of my brothers huge album collection not knowing anything about Zeppelin and was hooked immediately. I was 10 years old 1974! I'm 60 and still blasting this!

Oh no no no no and no , u missed the boat on this one. the live version from the live album of the same name where he plays a double neck gibson 12 string /6 string. he plays this entire song including solos on the 12 because this leads right into 'the rain song' which is physically impossible to play in standard tuning,so the 6 string is tuned in ( i believe G) an alternate tuning. so he goes from playing standard on a 12 string straight into alternate on 6 string with/out missing a single beat and playing some absolutely face melting jams!

Now imagine hearing this in a smoky basement/garage in the 1970s AND hearing the whole album...ah, those were the days, my friend. ❤ 13:48

When I heard Joey Diaz say that, I assumed he was talking about the concert video where they recorded an entire concert at MSG in 1973. The film was released in 1976 and you can see the whole range of their music in a live performance. Definitely check it out! You won't be disappointed.

The pace of the song is perfect for being right before "The Rain Song" the transition is profound, as is the entire Houses Of The Holy Album, my personal favorite compilation by them.

John Bonham is simply mind blowing on this song. The tempo changes, fills……and that right foot……damn….all with 1 foot. This song, Achilles Last Stand, In My Time of Dying (and dozens of other songs) show off how Bonzo was just otherworldly on drums.

You should see them in concert! Jimmy plays like no other! He plays double necks and things you've never seen or even heard of!! Definitely one of the best if not the best!

I have heard Jimmy say that this was a BITCH to play live ….because in the studio, he could layer several guitar parts…rhythm and lead ……and even the rhythm guitar here is a beast of a part…highly physically demanding……If your hands were not in shape, they would get shredded by this…..Itvwas never a favorite song by them for me, but the more I listen to it, the higher it gets in my list. JPJ’s bass line is gorgeous. Drums excellent. I think this must be the re-mixed version….the bass and drums are so forward in the mix, , which Jimmy often did when he re-worked these albums. And I remember Plants vocals originally being more prominent. I. Ould be wrong of course…..

I grew up in music. I don’t play,not anything. I sang. But there were instruments everywhere, from flutes and saxophone, piano and key boards, bass, guitars and drums. They were everywhere. My brothers, my cousins, our friends, my dad. Huge stereos, and the barn was a practice room for the bands. The music played almost non-stop. Everything from country to rock. You young ones, refuse to give it up.

In that intro, probably the best application of the electric 12 string in rock. Jimmy is a master. Polo, you are right, that bass part is SUPER important to the feel. THX!

One of my faves! Jimmy laid a half dozen separate guitar tracks over JPJ's lush bass and Jones's thunderous drums. This was the album opener, leading into The Rain Song.

It's impossible to say which guitarists are the 'greatest' when there's so many genres and applications and time periods to consider, and the vast majority of musicians in the world, you have never heard or heard of. But I'll pick some of my fav's..... Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Joe Bonamassa, Roy Clark, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and the list goes on... :)

I think they were always thinking about music, not just in the studio. The studio is where they brought it all together.

I don’t think you’ve heard enough Led Zeppelin, to put Page in third, I know your a huge Tool fan. In the lives the added solos Page does, shows more how great he is. Page at a young age was the most sought after sessions player, & played on many bands records, without getting credit. Yes their movie The Song Remains The Same, shows his talent amazingly, that’s just songs from early so many albums. From what I’ve heard in interviews, studio versions were more often in one or two takes. My vote will always be for Jimmy Page greatest guitarist ever!

Gilmour, Jimmy, and Jimi are the best to ever do it. JPJ’s bass and Bonham’s drums were fucking amazing. Led Zeppelin and Floyd are from another Planet.

You really need to hear Robin Trower. Check out “Bridge of Sighs”, “Rollng Stoned”, “Daydream”. He’s a unique guitarist and can lull you into contemplation or make You do the grunge face.

My favourite Guitarist has to be Frank Zappa. I love many, including Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix. Frank's Solo's & instrumentals have so many faces & levels.

My brother brought home Zeppelin IV ( old man with sticks) in 1975 I was 12 years old and Zeppelin has been my favorite band since and even if I disliked my brother, I don't, I would love him just for this fact. You should check out the guitar player who is the best and that would be Jeff Beck. Jeff Beck is David Gilmour's favorite guitar player and Jimmy Page inducted Beck into the Rock and Roll hall of fame and was inducted with Beck as members of The Yardbirds..

As others have said, Joey was surely referencing the movie not necessarily the song. Some fine playing on the album version, but to watch Page in action on film is a life altering experience.

This is a fantastic album. A roller coaster of Rock & Roll! The “Song Remains the Same” is a Great song; super-high energy. It transitions immediately into the mellow, melodic “The Rain Song”

Saw Led live in 1977 and they opened with this song after a delay of an hour. Crowd was stunned, shocked and ELECTRIFIED! I was pretty wasted until the lights went out and this song with such a powerful start began. I was immediately on my feet and experiencing something I will never forget. Love your reactions to this truly amazing, one of a kind, heavy metal Rock band. Please consider Joe Bonamassa, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Carlos Santana when you mention Master Guitarists.

I hear the phrase "greatest guitarist" but rarely know what that entails. There's a lot to dissect. Page has great technical knowledge of the instrument, understanding chord theory, harmony, and melody, scales and which ones to play when, but his ability goes way beyond that. As a composer, to me, he is second to none. This song is one testament to this fact, but if you really want to see another quality few musicians have, then watch Dazed and Confused from the live album Song Remains the Same. The number of changes in keys, dynamics, genres, and styles is mind-blowing. By the time you are done listening, his innovation, playing, and improvisational skills will certainly bring you into the camp of Page as the greatest guitar player of all time, any time, any place, anywhere.

This song is a guitar symphony. So many counter melodies. The number of killer riffs all interlocking. I’m not sure who the “greatest” is but he has got to be up there, and I’ve always considered this song his masterpiece.

To have the greatest guitarist conversation, you have to have ritchie blackmore and Jeff beck in that conversation as well. They are rabbit holes you need to go down.

Your touching on something here. The upbringing of the children becoming adults in that era spawned all this music. First there was Elvis, I was 3 years old when he came on the scene. When I was 12, the Beatles hit. They made us all want to be musicians. We had no internet, no cell phones. All we had was the Ed Sullivan show, and radio. So the music of that time really spoke to us in a deep level. So, by the 70's many of us became great musicians in our own right. I'm not sure if something like that could ever be repeated.

Zeppelin trivia tidbit: "The Song Remains the Same" by Led Zeppelin was originally an instrumental piece called "The Overture". After singer Robert Plant added lyrics, it was temporarily called "The Campaign" before becoming "The Song Remains the Same". Also it's possible that Joey Diaz was referring to the song remains film that featured them at MSG 1973. Those stars of death edibles are no joke!

Everyone should just listen to every album, front to back in succession to get the true feel and evolution of this band to realize divine intervention was involved. Talent that will never be reproduced. Todays music scene should be embarrassed.

While listening to this is amazing, watching Page in action playing this adds even more to the experience. The guy is an absolute master of his instrument.
