A lot of Led Zeppelin songs are adapted from other songs. This song is an adaptation of a Delta Blues song by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy from 1929, written about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, which killed 500 people and left over 700,000 people homeless.

Something you'll find with a lot of Zeppelin songs; they sound almost cinematic. They're broad and important sounding. It's like their music sounded bigger and greater than "a song". This song seems to move in a cyclical motion to my ear; it's like it keeps grinding around and around, carving circles of music in the brain. Fantastic song.

This album was recorded at a large country house called 'Headley Grange'. 'Bonzo' Bonham's drums were so loud, they had to put them into another room - so they put them in the hallway at the base of the stairs. That's why they have that massive echoing ambience.
@charlessarver8350
@charlessarver8350 Год назад
yes he played in a stairwell hall but that being how the echo achieved is actually a very debunked myth. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XZYDDX1DHDU.html

Wow Preesh Chas - I never knew that
@chassetterfield9559
@chassetterfield9559 Год назад
@@charlessarver8350 well, not quite "debunked myth". Everyone agrees that the drum kit WAS set up at the bottom of the stairwell. And, the kit was not just close miked for 'normal' recording, but other mikes were set up to record the natural reverb of the position. It is no use putting mikes down on the ground floor, because they will be swamped by the direct sound, but it is noted that mikes were set up on the first floor of the stairwell, & possibly higher. It is also noted, & this is probably your point, that an artificial delay unit was included on that mike. Proper tunable delays were still a relatively new & rare thing back then. One of the features of the video is Jimmy Page walking back into Headley Grange, & trying out the reverb in the hall with handclaps. He will hear the direct sound, & an 'echo' from the ceiling, or an upper wall, with a delay of some 50-200 ms, which is the reverb you want to mimic. That sound has travelled up, AND BACK. If you place a direct mike on the first floor, you only get half that delay. The direct recorded 'ambient reverb' mike mixed with the kit mikes will not sound 'right', for what you expect. Adding an artificial delay corrects this.

Zeppelin was born in the 60s...the sexual revolution..."summer of love" (1967)...hippies, my good man. Peace, love, drugs! The late 60's was a crazy time. America was burning (literally). Young people had had enough of the Vietnam war, the squeaky-clean post-war years of the 50s. A wide variety of factors combined in the late 60s and societal upheaval was everywhere. Why did I subscribe? Because you are listening to good tunes, letting them play thru, and keeping me entertained whilst doing so. You're fucking hilarious, man. As far as the talking over the music goes, that's how it was when we were growing up listening to this shit. We didn't have headphones as youngsters. We'd get together at someone's house who had an awesome stereo and we'd crank the shit up and rattle the windows. There was always background noise, albeit drowned out by the music! I was lucky...my older sibling was an audiophile, so he had a killer stereo, and an extensive LP collection. I'd get home from school as a young teen and nobody else was home. For two hours I was "Dancing With Myself" (Billy Idol tune you could have fun with...but it's from the 80's ha ha). Jamming out to all these killer old tracks, which weren't so old back then.

I don't think there was any more sexing going on then because of the music. Today's music sucks so listing to the good 70's music is something grate to hear, even from 50 plus years ago. kind of sad to say that.

The secrets of Bonzo's drum sound on this track can be found from Jimmy Page's own mouth in the guitar documentary "It Might Get Loud". In the case of "When The Levee Breaks", it was a product of miking him from three levels and recording the reverbing echo, on top of the initial "bright" drum sounds.

As always, the poor get the most marginal infrastructure and the 9th ward is one of the most neglected, in New Orleans. Countless people died from drowning or the treatment received at the "Superdome", where they were warehoused in the most abysmal conditions. Since your audience is primarily American (I assume), I'd like to give you some context of our recent history.

Oh believe me... a lot of loving went on in those days...!! Mark - A Qiuestion, has anyone ever suggested that you listen to them live from their reunion concert they played in 2007 in the O2 arena. Robert was 59 and still singing like a god, Jimmy was 63 and snowy haired and playing like a god and John was 61 and playing like a god. And the drummer they had... was their drummers son... Jason Bonham. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, react to "Kashmir" the show closer.... You've heared then young now please watch them live when they are older and still electric... Just like Pink Floyd. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO. Keep on Rocking

This was about the floods in misissippi based on the delta blues sound. When the Levee Breaks ( basically dams) in new Orleans. Amazing song. Not sure but I think it's based fm the 20-40s.

I can remember when my sister spun Zep 4 in Spring-Summer 1973. Big jams for a kid in grade school. This should mark my 50th year with Zeppelin. May you grow to love them as much as I do.

Play the harmonica into a harp mic, preferably a "green bullet". Run that through an amplifier, add some reverb and delay to the track and booom. A levee is a wall of stone, earth and or concrete along a river to prevent flooding. Levees are tested all the time, famously in New Orleans back in 2005.
