In the Sayers' film, Paul Venis plays the infamous Lee Duffy, an ex-boxer and bouncer from South Bank, Middlesbrough. Prior to his violent death in 1991, Lee had survived three attempts on his life. Heavily involved in drugs and violence, Paul's life parallels Lee's until Paul emerges as a pro fighter: Unbeaten K1 world champion, British, European and world champion (31 Fights, 31 Wins, 30 KO's).

One of the best podcasts av watched.great hearing stories of Lee Duffy but also Pauls life too. Coming from a rough estate in the north east myself and also having past struggles with drug addiction (kat n coke similar to Paul) and mental health issues it really hit close to home !! .... Can't wait for the sayers film like !!

I live a few miles from south bank and grangetown and he is right about good fighters coming from there ...there is alot of sound people from round here though ...it's a different kind of North up here ...there is alot of loyalty and alot of crazyness at at the same time. ..Paul sounds as real as it comes and a genuine fella

Its so great to hear someone talk about elements of Psychosis. I had a really bad period of drug induced psychosis and was sectioned in canada. I am now doing a masters in painting to try and explore Psychosis. What is real and what isn't provides so much material for painting. Anyway great podcast, much appreciated.

Very interesting interview Paul Venis seems like a nice lad. He's definitely built to have a fight. He has a good story to tell of his own life. I get a feeling he's holding something back. Maybe he doesn't want the world to know. I have met some good people from Middlesbrough over the years nice people. Will be interesting to see how the movie turns out. Good luck with everything you do in your future. I am sure you could be inspirational to the youth of your town help them turn there lives around like you have .

Glad this lad is getting some good exposure he speaks well, very down to earth. Watched all his available fights on RU-vid, seriously tough lad. No idea how Duffy was so fit and strong with all the drug abuse and partying, can only be down to genetics. Good questions asked aswel Shaun very good listen this.

Awesome interview, I can 100% relate to the seeing the guy story! I once was on mcat in a car in a wooded area near my house on a 4 day bender and could see clear as day a guy standing at the other side of the car to me with his face pressed against the window and none of the other lads could see him and was telling me to chill the f*** out, they wouldn’t drive off so I grabbed a hammer from the footwell and jumped out of the car and ran all the way home holding this hammer but didn’t see him all the way back, as soon as I got home (my mums) I walked in the front door and seen straight through the open plan house to the french doors at the back and the guy was stood there at the window looking in, I don’t know why my brain said this would be okay but I went straight to my room and got in bed with the hammer and then before long passed out, luckily the guy was gone once I woke up, can’t imagine how Paul felt when he seen him again!! That gave me goosebumps typing that lol!!

Love him or hate him Lee Duffy isn't a legend for no reason, he truly was a one-off, what other hard man continually wants to knock out other so called hard men, that was Duffys goal, the bigger and harder they were the better for him, and didn't use others. Gangs etc. He was a one man army, and his fists were his weapons, his the only person I know who can empty a pub just by walking into it. Didn't know Lee personally but seen places emptying just because he walked in, Now Then Now Then... UTB

I'm a Boro lass it's guys like these that have made huge impact on the generations that are still being told about the ones who we're hard and the ones who made it in life . Us Boro people respect this and never forget . Shaun have you heard of Gram Seed ? He's another reformed drug addict and ex criminal from Boro who also has an awesome story . I disagree mate Lee is very special because he wasn't a bully as a child, he was heavily heavily bullied, beaten up every single day and then turned himself into an absolute monster, capable of hitting 1000 pressups in a single session and while still a teenager took on the hardest men in his city and took revenge on all his bullies - a very, very atypical bully - that's why he's so fascinating.

He had a good side did Lee. I 'll never forget the time when I got lost on my bike ( I was a little twat for venturing too far on my bike.) and I was crying, I was about 8 and I was on South Bank rd , this was before the A66 was built so it was a main road back then, it is a dead end now, but anyway, I was lost, I was about 3 miles from home, He came up to me and said " are you ok son " I told him where I was from, he said that isn't that for kid, and he walked me all the way to the bottom of my street in St Hildas, always remember that. I didn't really know who he was till a few years later, and started hearing of his rep, that is the guy that walked me home. It actually effected me when I heard of his death and how he died, I was a bit older then, he didnt deserve to die like that.
