The former prime minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, now serving as the country's senior minister, presents the second volume of his book, "From Third World to First."
Why were we not taught anything about such an important Asian figure in schools and colleges ? He is such a visionary. His fears of virus used as weapons almost came true.
Why would we ? Because that would make people smarter and rationale..... dangerous combination for the existence of establishments. We got risk-free governance, no good initiatives so no rewards!
Im sitting watching this man and im angry that his name and story was never spoken here in the west. Surely one of if not the most important visionary of the modern age.
I have a great respect for this man. Born in a developing country and lived in modern Singapore, I can feel how much effort has been put to transform Singapore to the great country that it is.
Minute 47 until 47:30, The former Prime Minister talked about the danger of disease spread by Virus mutations. Fast forward to now, 2021, here we are, the world is in the grip of a pandemic. Talked about a smart, convicted, visionary, and wise Man. How I wish more leaders are like him. Enjoyed this interview immensely!! 👌👍
I cant believe i didn’t get to watch this interview sooner like 16-17 years sooner, if i had my thesis on Asian studies would have scored better marks😁 A powerful interview indeed, as usual the founding father of Singapore was very shrewd in the way he managed Singapore. He was a born leader and manager combined and it’s hard to find such talented person like him. The things he said about China,Japan, America and Europe are all come to light. If he’s still alive today what would he have commented about today’s issues, i wonder🤔
Yes some a lot of interviewers try to dominate LKY but fail miserable leading to terrible interviews. Rose certainly knows how to probe and when to remain silent. Great flow.
I am ashamed to be 40yrs old and never found the time to read of Mr Yew. He really may be the world's top nation-builder of the industrial age. Extremely sad we no longer see any leader remotely close to this man and his ethics and principles.
Nope not the Industrial Age but of the Electronic age . Think about what he said how early on your computer disks and other computer things were mostly manufactured in the Singapore area .
I've only managed to record two good interviews on VHS tape; this is one of them. Passed it a good friend because his dad wanted to watch the interview. This is back in year 2000 and I never got it back; for good reason I'm sure. The impact it had - priceless!
@@mkahmadi The story of Long-Term Capital Management ("LTCM"). Mentioned to a friend who told his professor in college. Lent it and never got it back. Same effect ;)
Do you have LKY's national day rally speeches? I used to watch all his NDP speeches religiously every year... There's only a few of them on RU-vid along with some bits and pieces. It will be great if someone can upload all his rally speeches.
Amazing how visionary he is in this interview. His position on science and technology and its drawback if man is now careful especially with the virus. His position on how China would not let the rich get very rich without looking after the people. How true.
Very very rich must have that inkling & duty to help & contribute to the lower rung of citizens. Just think how much money can one used on earth just for himself & family
Some of his views are still applicable today. Amazing, brilliant and capable leaders. S’pore is very fortunate to have LKY as a Prime Minister whereas, it is a total loss for Malaysia to reject him.
It is what it is. To say that us the Malaysian are loss for rejecting him? I don't think so. His idea at that time is too 'adventurous' for malaysia. He should understand that in malaysia we have our own culture n identity. It is not sth that we can reset it just like by pressing a buttons.
Malaysia would have already achieved developed country status in 80s and now on par with Japan/Korea if LKY was Malaysia PM. And with Malaysia rich natural resource, Malaysia would be the richest and powerful medium size country, not just in SEA, but in Asia, respected by countries near and far.
Although Mr.Lee was an anti-colonialist, he ginuely gave a good advice to American about their hubris right here. He say that America was ahead, but soon the scale will tip in 20 years. Now in 2021, that couldn't be more true. He say we should co-exist and respect eachothers to be prosperous. We can teach eachother and learn from eachother. Being an adversaries doesn't mean we can't also be an allies and both profits. Yet, during the last 5-6 years both Americans and Chinese are getting further and further away from eachther, and both of their economies are slowing down. Be it the fear of American that don't want to let Chinese taking over their place, or the fear of Chinese that westerners would back stab them if they're too vulnerable. It's 19/9/2021 now. With the threat of Corona virus and downfall of traveling economies, each countries took a hit all the same. To recover, and prosper, maybe they need to take a step back and try to change the course of their decision during the past 5 years.
China is partly to blame for the deteriorating relationship. They became predatory and aggressive in their economic policies, openly challenging to overtake the US. China is too overly ambitious. It is a pity because a positive relationship between US and China will be most beneficial for the progress of mankind.
Thank you for sharing this insightful videos especially what and how our country was like during the 60s, for our awareness, and now, how the successful transformation begins with its now ongoing MRT . I applaud and respect how much our own government has done and continuning doing for our citizens. GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY.
He predicted the rise of China, gave his opinions to fight against the western reporter embedded prejudice on China by telling the virtues of eastern Asian society. One part of China’s success is following the pattern of Singapore. LKY is a real hero for Singapore and Chinese around the world.
@@zhenmeiheng4917 touch your heart, now even their Bumiputra have to come to Singapore during a pandemic to pump petrol. Hak Melayu, not when they cannot go home and work for Singapore.
Furture history will show quite clearly that Lee Kuan Yew was the most influencially inspiring Eastern mind of his age. Together with the likes of Henry Kissinger, they have founded a bridge of unity for our worlds civilizations from the Fertile Cresent to the Jewel of Singapore.
Just happened to watch this interview. On the question of free press, can anyone imagine the amount of lies the foreign press had published. And today, the number of people criticizing the amount of lies fed them over the years.
Sometimes I think and now I am sure only LKY however hard he tried to be polite and careful, to handle Mr.Ross well and doing justice to all the honestly-earned prosperity through honest means over its own handicap and become a model for like-minded small vulnerable nation.
Today LKY's conviction about capital punishment on drug is the envy of the world as the problems caused by these vices in their countries have gone far out of control.....
46.22 because Science means you are able to muster the universe, change nature, to the advantage of man and through technology make the world a better place for human beings. But I am also concerned that in our exuberance, and our inability to have that (model?) balance, we may change the world to such an extent that we may threaten our own existence. How true.
LKY talk about Nkrumah statues and symbols, actually he has one symbol, Bougainvilleas, everywhere in Singapore you see this hardy practical plant that he had planted everywhere. Not the prettiest, not the most biodiverse, but hardy, practical and good, exactly like LKY.
The contention that sg was a third world country before LKY is a fallacy. Signaporen had the third largest economy in asia in the 1930s (behind japan and Hong Kong)...there were roads, bridges, raffles hotel, high courts, opera halls etc....that contention simply isnt correct
30 to 35 minutes in talks about how tough the Japanese are and why they are different from other Asians ... so they are tough and stick together and solidarity like Legos blocks 😂
@@vennsim71 I mean hor, the son did such mediocre handling of this whole Covid, if the father is still around, would have a fit scolding the son nicely.
Sorry, I'm getting too distracted by the interviewers terrible watch. What is that monstrosity?! Is he off scuba diving as soon as the interview is over?
I don't agree he gave up power lah, like he hor not happy tell people to repent. He scold anyone in Singapore, no one dare to talk back loh. Frankly he never let go until 2011 when LHL made him leave cabinet. That being said, if you like him work so hard all his life, if he cannot sit in cabinet as a SM then MM, then who else can?
