Listening to SY, it really seems that way. They are both very much playing on the same wavelength.

Kim wasn't always on Bass either. They just had some communal guitars but some they gravitated more towards for their own style.

i meet Lee years ago in toronto before a show. Man he is the most down to earth straight up dude ive ever meet in the music scene. We spoke for about 35 mins, about what? fucking jazzmasters and the state of music in general. He gave me some awesome advice about my jazzmaster. Thanks Lee a true class act.

He Truly is.....At the time i spoke with him, he was telling me and my friend about some Jazzmasters that got stolen! it was a big deal cuz some of his favourite Jazzmasters were taken in '99. He got them back 5 of 13 though! one was found at a pawn shop around that chat we had! One of my all time fav bands and Guitar players.....His solo stuff is outstanding as well.
@joshuakodrat
@joshuakodrat 6 лет назад
Oreius you’re right. That guitar’s stolen tragedy makes the SY’s music on NYC G&F was completely different, with much of Experimental music on that album. But for me, that’s not a big deal, NYC G&F album still a such of great album and more sophisticated than any SY’s album in that time

A very cool interview, and he's probably right about the influence of Dinosaur Jr *and* Sonic Youth on Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, who in turn certainly had a big influence on other early '90s UK alternative guitarists in terms of the using the offsets. But there were also guys like Elvis Costello and Robert Smith of the Cure who were using Jazzmasters in the UK starting in the late '70s and who were pretty influential, too. So, the popularity of the offsets in the UK wasn't all due to Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr.
@danielstoddart

That's right. The cover of Elvis Costello's first album is the first time I ever saw a Jazzmaster.

I think he was using a Jaguar then, but he coulda used a Jazzmaster earlier than I imagined. He had a Candy Apple Red '60s Jaguar with a white pickguard circa Nothing to Fear and Good For Your Soul and then sometime around Dead Man's Party he switched to a Fiesta Red Jazzmaster with a tortoise-shell type pickguard which he used all the way up to the Dark at the End of the Tunnel era, and then he used PRS's from then on.

Considering their standing and the obvious attention that they garner for the Jazzmaster model, it's so surprising that Fender haven't introduced a Thurston and Lee Signature. I think they own about 20-23 jazzmasters between them.

@fetchmybeer Well, they took out all of the tone controls, so the main difference is that this one has humbuckers, and Thurston's has traditional Jazzmaster pickups. The Jazzmaster pickups will have more of a single coil brightness and clarity to them. They'll probably be noisier, too, but hey, if you're into Sonic Youth, you'd probably be into that.

I've recently discovered that my jaguar handles a really low alternate tuning (B standard) quite well, almost better than my jazzmaster or tele does. I think it has something to do with the extra string length provided by the trememlo system.

I like the 25.5" scale, I love the tele deluxe pickups, but what I don't get is why you would want to get ride of a tone knob. I would want this guitar with 2 volume and 2 tone for each pickup. That would make it perfect.
@callumsutherland2954
@callumsutherland2954 5 лет назад
The tone knob thing, I imagine, is just because the sheer amount of pedals and effects draped on top of thhe guitar tone makes it essentially useless.

Yeah, I've always heard that about wood, but if you block it with plastic it will absorb treble. Steel, brass, or any wood are fine, but plastic absolutely anywhere on the guitar is going to deaden tone. Not that this concerns me, because I loves me some upbends.

"Specially Made" but probably not distinct from other designers as far as Alnico pickups go. I don't think Cunife would be too expensive seeing as how the magnet is still being used with linear transducers or something. I d'know. I guess it's kinda neat that Fender is changing the formula, but it's irritating they just don't go and do it right. It makes it hard on eBay, too... like trying to find an old semi-hollow Starcaster and only coming up with knockoffs.

@Iamcola65 Saying that Dimebag is better than Lee Ranaldo is like saying that Louis Armstrong is better than Ludwig von Beethoven. The music is too different to compare. Sure, Dimebag played crazy, technical heavy metal guitar. Ranaldo doesn't, but he does what he needs to well for the style of music he's playing. To compare him to such a different guitarist like that doesn't prove much.

@advilbrewer
@advilbrewer 14 лет назад
well, it seems that his "jazzblaster" is nothing like a jazzmaster at this point after all the modifications that changed all the aspects that made it a jazzmaster in the first place. I like Sonic Youth but I think they may fall into the category of people who use jazzmasters just because they look cool and were cool because not many people used them. I like the way My Bloody Valentine used them because he took advantage of the natural tone of the JM. Don't think I am hating on SY, just opinion.
