Leeds is a City in transition as it moves away from internal combustion engines. Cars are restricted from entering the City and discouraged by ‘bus gates’ which result in a fine if a motorist drives through one.
Once you drive in on your familiar route - that you’ve used for years - and drive over one of the newly painted ‘bus gates ’ ( actually motorist traps) a camera takes your photo and a stiff fine of £60 ish arrives in the post.
According you let the Leeds car parks ‘wither on the vine’ from that point on and either come in on the train or a bus.
( for the 9 months of the year UK winter, you just abandon Leeds altogether and drive to an out of town shopping centre - Meadowhall.
Having discouraged motorists- Leeds city council welcomed diesel buses - they run through the City in hundreds like wildebeest through the Serengeti - sucking the fresh air into their Diesel engines and blowing invisible pollutants through the streets..
One the one hand - while all of the air in the City of Leeds seems to have passed through a bus engine - and out the exhaust- at least once on a Saturday morning - on the other, it’s often forgotten that this process causes annihilation of grass pollen that causes hay fever..
Soon electric buses with massive lithium batteries will replace Leeds Diesel buses and pollen levels will likely rise.
It’s a sad but true fact that around 100yrs ago Leeds had mains-electric trams. Funny thing that.. they were more efficient than the soon to arrive battery buses..
The streets overhead lines were electrified and connected by overhead pantographs on the trams, which ran on metal tracks sunk into the road surface.
But they can’t afford to go back to that better more efficient system because they ripped it all out in the early 1950’s
Anyway, here are the diesel Leeds buses recorded for posterity - along with Leeds Market, street scenes and Leeds Railway Station.
Oh, I met a film crew filming for a tv show ‘Dress to Impress’ (?) iTV2. So I filmed them - being interested in their video camera.
