Well, I try to demonstrate that with only 3 basic grips we can play almost every chord. In the lesson below I gather all the 3 grips and we play a chord progression containing the most common jazz chords: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hACDMj5QGZY.html But we can alter the grips, creating new grips, to an infinite extent...

But hey ... take care not to get lost in this Piano-YT-realm. I talk from experience. You can discover a lot of nice thinks and at the end you don't know where to start to practice. That is what I like at Oliver Prehn, He gives you a great fundamental base with a smart practice routine. (At least in Jazz).

Without openness, on the contrary, you would not have known Newjazz. Keep on being curious. It's the most beautiful state of mind 😉

nupfe oh and as for your other comment Nahre Sol is a real talent but all the vids ive seem from her are more of briefly explaining what creative prompt is behind the vid and then performing it. if she has more in depth informative stuff ill have to check it out. her classical funk mix had some of the most colorful melodies ive heard in a while.

Rick Beato isnt a piano player so it's hard to watch his piano lessons. I agree this channel is very unique

Hi : Marco :) You got far into this video... and you ask some tricky nice questions. A great student you are!!! When playing the little "fool around" solo I do actually not think very much! I move the grips in a way so they are placed closely together, and I have of course done the exercises with grip 1, 2 and 3 so I'm used to move the grips in 'natural' progression. Now we have not added the bass note in this little solo but if we should analyze some of the chords anyway it could be these chords: Eb69 - D7alt (a fifth down if not tritone substituted) - Gm7 (a fifth down) - C7 (II-V) - Fmi7 (fifth down) - Bb7 (II-V) - Bbmi7 (major to minor sub) - Eb7 (II-V) - D7alt (down with a fifth if not tritone sub) - Gmi7 (fifth down) - C7 (II-V) and so on... On grip 2 I often think triad upper structures as shown in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3FcuCR14Lmw.html - In that lesson we name the inversions "1" and "2" instead of "a" and "b". A little confusing, sorry. I do not necessarily play all notes from the upper structure triads - but in this solo I just think in that way and play some of the notes. On grip 3 I play pentatonic hand grips as shown in this lesson: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-61bI3dgdXMo.html On grip 1 I play Dorian scale. In this solo I often just play step 1, 2 and 3. For example on Fmi7 I circle around the notes f, g and ab. I hope you can use my answer. NewJazz I was going to ask the same questions and you both made it easier thanks. So to summarize your approach: on grip 1 we can play all the dorian scale as it is very consonant, on grip 3 we use the pentatonic scale avoiding the so called “avoid notes”, and on grip 2 we enphasize some of the available tensions through upper structure triads. Right? Thanks for this beautiful lesson and I see us coming closer and closer to Keith Jarret Köln Concert sound in the next few months!

Well, As you know, this lesson is only about the left hand, but I like that you find the right hand interesting anyway - you are thorough with your work ;) And you are right; when I play "grip1" in the left hand I tend to play a stepwise right hand grip like in the lesson you refer to with the thumb on the first note of the Dorian scale that the "grip1" fits. When playing "grip2" in the left hand I play mainly Major triads (add9). Don't be sorry - just reach out and ask all you want :) On page 4 in this document I show some different flavors to grip 3 by using different bass notes www.newjazz.dk/Compendiums/left-hand-chords.pdf On page 2 I show only two options on grip 1 - but there is of course several more (I haven't added them yet). Try to make grip 1 playing for example the Cmi79 chord, Now try to change the bass note to the other notes on the C Dorian scale and you got 7 different flavors... Best regards Oliver

Hi :) Well, I mix some different techniques. Mostly I use the pentatonic hand grip as explained in this lesson: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mOCyAo5ZfIw.html (we walk through 8 steps, at step 5 we add the right hand). I also use the triad based hand grip in the right hand as explained in this lesson: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3FcuCR14Lmw.html Then I occasionally also play stepwise on the Dorian scale I can see/hear...
