This is a clear and concise explanation of the basic things you need to know about left-hand voicings for the ii-V-I progression. I didn't learn a whole lot in this video, but if I had encountered it earlier it could have saved me a lot of time. Nicely done.
@whitedo1
@whitedo1 4 года назад
You can extend this to more complex progressions. Try the progression 2-5-1-4-7-3-6. In G you have Am7 - D7 - Gmaj7 - Cmaj7 - F#7b5 - B7 - Em7. Basically "Autumn Leaves". If you start with the Am7 in 2nd inversion you can play the entire progression by alternately moving the bottom 2 notes down and then the top 2 notes. If you start in the root position you move the top 2 notes then the bottom 2.

Just started learning jazz and after doing 2_5_1s in every key for long enough, I didn't know what to go onto next.this video came along at the perfect time. Now my late night don't sound so staunchly chorded. Very well explained.

Been looking for a video like this to help a self-taught pianist like me out! Thank you so much!!! My mind is blown every time you post a video. Especially on this video, I was amazed that I was essentially inserting the root note with my brain after you took it away in the intermediate and advanced chord progressions!

I've recently been going through a lot of theory about chords, voice leadings, inversions to make edm and feel like this is all packed in this 9 min video. I feel a bit sad for taking that much time to figure out that omitting the root note is basically what creates the ambiguity that i was looking for. So much good stuff for edm producers on your channel thanks a lot man!

Hi Jeff! Just want to say I really enjoy your videos, you're a great teacher and the videos are really inspiring! Would love to see more voicing videos like this. The 3 difficulty levels were very helpful. I have been watching a lot of your videos now, and decided to look for your Patreon page, and then I noticed that that particular link in your video description isn't active html, like the other links (possibly because you omitted the "http"-bit?). Anyway, you might consider editing the description to activate that link and make it a _little_ bit easier to find your Patreon page :-) Also, since I'm kind of on a roll here, can I ask you exactly what the specs are of the computer you are running all your software on? (Perhaps put that answer in the discription too?) Especially interested in knowing what can run Keyscape, Omnisphere, Logic Pro and plugins in a stable fashion with minimal glitches and crashes. It seems your gear handles a lot, even including video recording, almost without hiccups, so it might be a good setup to replicate :-) Thanks again!

Hello Jeff! Thanks for the video. How do I construct my melodies over these left hand chords during solo improvisation? Do I use the notes of these chords on the right hand or I just construct any melodic statement without following the chord ?

Love this - Just a suggestion - I'm an accordion player trying to learn piano and I have trouble with left-hand dexterity for the piano - What would really help for us novices is showing/knowing your left hand fingering. Maybe there are simple piano rules for that - or probably not cast in stone - just not obvious to me. Thanks for publishing !

Great video as always! Just a small curiosity: taking the basic version as an example, can you do the same kind of voice leading (the 5th of the II going down a semitone to the root of V, and the 7th of the II going down a semitone to the 3rd of the V) starting from all four inversions of the II? For instance, is it ok to start from 3 5 7 1? If not, why are the two "starting points" shown in the video better than the other two?
@JeffSchneiderMusic
@JeffSchneiderMusic 7 лет назад
+djah Great question. Yes, the voice leading will work regardless of what inversion you start on, but I prefer the examples demonstrated in the video because I like the sound of those intervals. Definitely try out the other inversions to see which combinations you like best.

Hey Jeff, thanks for another fantastic lessson! I've found a cadential progression that I find rather juicy... but I can't seem to figure out why it works and what the relationship between the root and the chord is. In C, including a regular 2-5-1 progression, it goes like this: Dm9 - G7(b9) - Cmaj9 - Abmaj7 - Cmaj7. What's with the Abmaj7 chord and why does it work?
@JeffSchneiderMusic
@JeffSchneiderMusic 7 лет назад
+cray_cray hey there! The Abmaj7 chord is the bVIMaj7 chord in the key of C major. It is a borrowed chord from C natural minor scale. Did a video on borrowed chords modal mixture a few videos back. Have a look!
