Ever been stuck without toilet paper? We have too. In this video we use differential calculus, mathematical modeling, and data simulations to show just how fast toilet paper gets consumed and what the best strategy is to avoid leaving someone else without that precious paper while on the loo.
Math The World is dedicated to bringing real world math problems into the classroom and answering the age old question “when will I ever use this?”
We use unique topics for algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and much more and go beyond context problems and use a technique called mathematical modeling to find solutions to real world questions and real world problems. These videos are great for students who plan to enter technical fields that require real world problem solving, and can be a great resource for teachers looking for ways to bring real world contexts into their classroom.

You don’t have to travel much to discover this. Try China and especially India if you’d like to experience it.

How about what is the optimal way to hold the max amount of water in your hands?
@MathTheWorld
@MathTheWorld 8 дней назад
Oh, we have a video in the works that relates to this! Checkout the two videos on condiment cup optimization. The third one extends that problem in a way that relates to the hands cupping. I will try to make that explicit in the video. Thank you for asking! By the way, do you have a particular context that you are asking about? Is this for washing your face (so the water isn't in there very long) or for transporting water over a further distance (where significant leakage might be an issue)? Thanks! The first answer is intuitive since a single square contributes less of the roll's volume when the roll is bigger

For those who pee standing up, where should we be aiming to minimize splatter? Might be out of the scope of what math can solve for without physics, but thought I could ask anyway.
@MathTheWorld
@MathTheWorld 8 дней назад
That is a good question. My quick response is to aim so the angle of the stream hits the bowl so the angle between the two is the smallest. There were scientists working on a urinal design that was splatterless, and they eventually found such a design. You might be able to find it if you look it up.

Oh, I am glad! I just looked up your channel. It looks good! I hope you keep growing. It took us forever to get to 2K subscribers, but it really took off after that (you know, for a math channel).

I think the real question is why use a sheet of tree pulp to wipe your bottom, sometimes not getting everything out, instead of using good old water to get every nook and cranny cleaned

At 6:00, it might help to set R to be the initial radius (a fixed value), then for r=1/2×R or r=1/3×R, we see the roll decreasing twice or three times as fast, since dr/dt is inversely proportional to r. It looks like you have r as the variable for current radius, but also use 1/2r and 1/3r as the current radius.

Thanks for catching that. Yes, that would have helped to make things more clear. Do you want to volunteer to watch our videos pre-launch? I always seem to miss those little things when I see the version the team sends me for approval. (Maybe it is because I am sick from hearing my own voice).

What else that would be interesting is how much toilet paper is on a regular roll compared to the large commercial rolls in the public restrooms, taking into account the core radius and the entire radius?

Water is becoming much more popular in developed countries with toilet seat bidets. I was actually astonished when I was doing research for this video to find out how many trees are cut down each year just for toilet paper.

I find the choices you made a bit confusing. You use the area of length•thickness which is the area of the EDGE of paper. But whenever normal people talk about area of toilet paper, they typically imagine the SURFACE area of the paper, i.e. the functional side of the paper. This will certainly lead to a lot of confusion from the viewers. It might be a good idea to make this point more explicit, so that people don’t get lost. Alternatively, it might have been better to talk about the volume of paper, which is more natural for some.
