I am retired. A retired professor. Whatever that wobbling noisemaker is in the video, it is not a professor. Not Really. She may have been hired by a university; it may stand in front of classes and speak; and it may have ornate, framed sheets of high-grade paper with calligraphy quality letters adorning the name of the school from from which it matriculated, but it is not a professor. What is a professor? A professor embodies the one person in our culture we give space to think, to wonder, to explore, to discover, and to set an example for the next generation to do the same. For this to work, however, the professor must be as free from ideology as possible. I taught, among other things, religious studies for 15 years at a state university. Over that time, only a few students deduced my religious practice. I was not there to convince or convert, but to inform and exemplify the questioning mind. I loved my students, loved them all, and i wanted the to be curious about all the world’s religions. I taught students, not doctrine. This loud person in the video, i can promise you, is not there to teach the Socratic Method. It is there to convert students to its ideology.
