Captain Jacques du Toit speaks to us about his early years growing up as a "PF child", following his dad's career as an Infantry from 3 SAI in Potch, to Kimberly, 112 Bn at Madimbo, and finally to Pretoria. Jacques shares his first-hand encounters and experiences of the events that shaped South Africa's history during the '70s and '80s. Events that would later influence his decision to join the SA Air Force. If you have questions for Jacques, please leave them below. What a small world! The face looked familiar, and after listening to your story, realized I worked with your dad when I arrived at 3SAI as a Junior officer in 1978.

Jacques it's always fascinating to listen to your stories and all the details you are able to recollect. We should catch-up again soon.

Interesting tales - One thing that I caught - COLOT - Yep, I spent a few weeks there doing "train the trainer"... a concept so new that many businesses weren’t even aware of such training! That was 1980 - a bit before your parents got there. In many ways the SAAF/ SADF was way ahead of things when it came to training.

Recently discovered this treasure trove. Well done. 9 months service in 1965 led to a long career.

Jacques.. Do you remember the Herc that was loaded with cubicles and a large diesel generator to power the booths and the reel antenna that was fitted to the port side para door..? I was the Loadmaster on a few of those radio intercept missions.

Hi Lex, That sounds very interesting! I flew from 1990 to 1997 (watch out for Ep. 2 & 3!), but only on the DC-4 and B-707C. What you are referring to must have been in the 1980s? You probably flew with that legend of the SA Airforce - Cmdt. Tienkie Jones?
