We speak to Colonel Nick Mostert of 3 SAI who served between 1974 and 1998. He is an Honoris Crux holder (for valour). One of only 203 earned. A man that commanded the 1st South African Cape Corps besides other high commands like Group 39, Queenstown, and Group16, Maryvale, Springs. He tells us about his life in the SADF with more than a few jokes in between. A fascinating story of a platoon, company and higher commander of the highest calibre. Don’t miss it. If you have questions for the Colonel, leave them below. Please subscribe and activate the bell to be informed of new episodes.

During my interview referred to Jan Breytenbach as a Brigadier in actual fact he is a Colonel and then said that it was General Mortimer that gave me orders to start the bike squad but it was General Pik van Noorden. My apologies to the viewers, I think old age is catching up to me.

Nick Mostert, I enjoyed your interview. You represent everything of what I would term as an outstanding officer and leader. Fortunately for the SADF, there were many good leaders like yourself; had this not been the case, then some of the outcomes from the border war may have been disastrous. I was called up in 78/79 to 1SSB Tempe till August 78 and thereafter to DSqn Walvis Bay till the end of 79. Did two stints, first at Katima from Dec78 till Apr79 and then again Aug79 to Dec79. I did not enjoy my national service and hated every minute of it. My attitude was totally wrong and could not wait for it to end Was posted to UMR in Durban and did another two stints at Ruacana and Omathiya. Only now later in life have I come to regret not having tried to have a more positive mindset. I had many opportunities to do various courses and training, and regretfully I forwent these. I would have loved to have motivated myself to try for Paras or Special Forces or even to push for JL training. I wish I could have viewed obstacles as opportunities but alas...Nafi was a word that came to mind; so at 61 I look back at these lost opportunities with great regret. You were the exact opposite to me in that you took all opportunities and made a go for it. Best Regards

Colonel, I was one of the Etosha rangers from Namutoni. We left there at the end of 1983 after my daughter was born. We used to visit you and your OC at Oshivelo and were given 5,56 rounds for our Mini 14's and bought cases of South African beer. That was during the time of RSM "Arab" Comrie. Good memories. Regards, Barry Patterson

Koos, what a pleasure listening to this interview. Col Nick Mostert says it as it is! Strikes one as an infantry officer of some caliber. To command a unit of another race and especially those of what was mixed race would take a very special officer, with his out look and attitude success with troops of any race would be willing to follow. Salute you Sir.

First - thanks for bringing this program. Will spread the word and in time it will really grow. Brings back memories! Met Nick Mostert in Oudshoorn when I was on JL’s in 1975 and him an instructor. Remember when we walked through the klowe in the Swartberge to recover bodies of mates of ours who died during Vasbyt 5. Spend 4 years with him in 3 SAI although we never served in the same company. Good times with Jan Hougaard, Borries Bornman, Willem Welgemoed (died sadly a few weeks ago), Flip le Roux, Mucho Delport, Derrick Els, etc. Salute you Colonel! Herkie (Ertjies) Strydom

Enjoy these interviews tremendously, brings back lots of memories. See many old friends and colleagues here. Correction Nick, when we were deployed in Rhodesia, we wore camouflage uniforms, we were not supposed to be there, not much is available on that operation. All of us that were there know what happened, not everything is known.

@johanintaiwan 3 года назад
@@LegacyConversations I could do that Koos, not sure if it would be the right thing to do. To be honest, I don’t know how classified that operation is as I cannot find any reference to it. It was commanded by then Commandant Roland de Vries, who is one of the most respected generals from the SADF. He would be a good call for an interview.

As far as I know the Rhodesians (they have the same type of channel for years now) is openly talking about it. Gen de Vries is most welcome here. Everyone is. Mind, I have no idea how we will record everyone. Later se probleem, blah, Koos

An officer and gentleman,matter of interest Koos,both my training officers and two of my instructors were at bridge 14.both offices awarded the Hanoris Crux for valor,Lt Dewet,tragically murdered on his farm a few months ago,and Lt Wessels who lost his his foot above the ankle,great officers,much respect. I served from 78-83 with the Engineers,saw old 31 or 32 mm films on the battle,remarkable what they achieved,still in contact with one oue manne that was in recovery unit from Ops Savanna,lots of stories and laughs.Enjoying every minute of Legacy

Koos, I have listened to the interviews with James Teitge, SW Fourie and Nick Mostert; I enjoyed all of them and I look forward to others as well. As you can see from my reply to Nick Mostert, I was not a good soldier; had a bad attitude et al. I do enjoy your interviews; An interview with with Jan Breytenbach would be great; though I expect he is getting on a bit. Wynand Du Toit as well. Take care.

Morning. We have a recording scheduled with the 32 Battalion Bond which I hope will be soon. They might agree to contact Col Breitenbach for us. Special Forces Operators come one by one as they arrange it between themselves. At some stage, I hope, Wynand du Toit will be here too. All are welcome here, you too Moses, your story will be welcomed. Tomorrow, Monday, 6 Sept, RSM Teitge is on again and Wednesday 8 Sept we have RSM Ig van Rooyen, another legend. But this channel is for all, not only the legends and famous units. Contact me at 4xsamil@gmail.com and let us talk about your experiences. The idea is for someone in the future to have a good glimpse into our past. K

Terence Purdon , Brings back lot's of memmories , I was lucky enough to be at the Bereda farm outside Potch , our ff+ leader and rode as a team doing Roman Riding on Horse Back , I rode roman 3 and he rode 5 horses behind me , if he reads this ,He will remember the big crash , when he did not make the bend. Mr Groenewald ,I respect you . Besides trying to kill ourselves we broke in wild horses from then SWA to do Border Duty . Bereda ,Equestrian centre Part of 3 SAI , 4th Field Dropped some misguided shells on us at the farm ,or Was it 5FT field . Don't really matter ,nobody got heart . I also show jumped for the SADF 1974. Did lots of Camps . 720 was the days you had to serve , I recall. RESPECT IS WHAT IT IS BOTH WAYS .

@ 1:02:21 I don't think that there's ever been a Parabat who needed someone to speak on their behalf but in this case I'll take my chances. I spent a lot of time at Ondangwa Airbase '78 through '83 and got to know some of them. Far from sitting around waiting for the Pongos to do all the spade work before swooping in to grab the glory, they were either out on 7 to 10 day foot patrols or, if in base, being chased around (opfok) by their belligerent RSM. If my memory serves me, I think there were a number of valk groups in the base and they worked on some sort of a roster. There might have been one valk group on standby (ballasbakking?), waiting for a callout but the rest were definitely not idle. If for some unusual reason there might have been a short period of inactivity, they would very soon find a way to get into trouble so they could give the RSM something to do. They seemed to relish chase parade.

My father born in Kuraman early 1920’s joined the SSB at Roberts Hights as a 15 year old before the war. Spent 9 years in the unit including their time in the desert and Italy. After the war he left South Africa because of exactly What Col Mostert spoke, did not like the way things were turning with this influence of BB and the Nats.
