Medicinal marijuana is at last set to become a legal reality for Australians, but many are also asking - should we legalise cannabis for recreational use? A discussion from ch9's "The Verdict" 12/11/2015. Panelists (left-to-right): Osman Faruqi, Mark Latham, Pauline Hanson, Karl Stefanovic (host), Jamila Rizvi, Amanda Vanstone, Peter FitzSimons. It would be interesting to know the % of hypocrite viewers who voted No yet drink alcohol or smoke tobacco.

over 3000 years of marijuana use... show me one death directly related to the use of it..
@glennl78
@glennl78 8 лет назад
+L33t70mage actually current archaeological studies have revealed that cannabis has been used by humans for around 10,000 years without a single related death. In fact the ld50 rate of Marijuana is 1:40,000. Meaning that a person would have to consume 1500 ponds of marijuana in 15 minutes in order for it to induce death. In comparison the ld50 rate of salt is1:3.3 which equates to 3 pounds of salt in 15 minutes will induce death. So salt is more dangerous than Marijuana.

As a comparison, people are hospitalised with potentially life threatening conditions for taking Panadol every year in Australia.
@DaveWhoa

yes, panadol is hepatoxic. Cannabis is not toxic, and some cannabinoids like CBD are known to have neuroprotective qualities - CBD is a stronger antioxidant than VitC and VitE.

Exactly. I also believe that this is the problem across the board in our societies today. People should be suitably qualified on a subject prior to recommending laws that govern that particular subject. You can see the blunders that are occurring with governments around the world with ill equipped politicians making decisions that are detrimental to our societies with very unfavorable consequences.

The Australian government is too cowardly and conservative to legalize recreational cannabis. Only when it is legalized in the rest of the world will Australia follow. The so called harm effects of cannabis fall between coffee and a beer. The real harm of cannabis is the prohibition laws. Is ironic the two groups that want to maintain prohibition are the drug cartels and politicians.
@DaveWhoa
@DaveWhoa 8 лет назад
even now that they're looking to legalize it, it's only for medical use - the government still wants you to get impaired on alcohol - relaxing with cannabis is illegal. And even if you want it for medical use, guess what - no you cannot grow it. You have to get a prescription from your doctor, and then what can you buy? currently NOTHING in Australia, and the only real options available anyway are Sativex and Dronabinol. In other words, you still have to pay BIG PHARMA - the same mob who've been paying corrupt US politicians to keep it at the most restricted Schedule I in the USA. I cannot emphasize enough how absolutely *disgraceful* that is. Still a LONG, LONG WAY TO GO before we have LAWS THAT MAKE COMMON SENSE - LAWS WE CAN BE PROUD OF.

@davexb6595
@davexb6595 8 лет назад
No one has ever died from cannabis. This is not true of Panadol and many other drugs you will find in most homes. However there are health risks with cannabis. It can trigger some mental illness in a few people. Very few people - but it can happen. In some people it leads to loss of productivity and motivation. A very few can even get a little dependant on it. It also stays in the system longer and we don't know what is a safe wait time before operating machinery or motor vehicles. So yeah there are medical risks BUT................ 1. We don't know much about those risks because it is illegal and the risks tend to be from long term use, so it doesn't get studied thanks to prohibition. Also technology to determine what is a safe level before operating machinery is not developed thanks to prohibition. 2. Those are health issues. What health issue did we ever address successfully by treating it as a criminal issue? Oddly enough. the way to address health issues is to treat it as a health issue. I.E. education and regulation. So the health angle simply reinforces the need to legalise and regulate it.

This is so funny. The lady in the glasses says "we can't hand out drugs saying, here we wont tell you this could be addictive, this could be dangerous, this could harm you"..... That is exactly what doctors are doing more than ever with prescription medications that are highly addictive and completely alter people's state. A relative of mine was weaning from anti depressants and had to stop her car because she was so dizzy and wanted to be sick,,,, driving! Not being tested by road side checks, and simply just as bad. Depression statistics are going through the roof and doctors are dishing out drugs like there is no tomorrow. We are going to have a generation of numb people who struggle to deal with every day life because they have been medicated with prescription drugs since 18. Weed has never killed a person, it saves lives. If someone wants to smoke a joint at night to relax how are they so much worse than the mother who just took a xanax and had 3 red wines????? The entire system and government is a fraud. Pauline mentions she was so spaced out and didn't know what was going on.... hahaha. We can walk into a shop and buy as much alcohol as we want! Who gets to decide what I choose to medicate my body with if it works for me and I'm not harming anyone? It is so sad that we live in a world where grown adults are ruled by a government that will sell us cigarettes and alcohol, both know to kill us, but we will be put in jail if we grow a weed in our back yard that we might chose to smoke or ingest???? The criminals make so much money because they can.... remove the criminals and watch the loved up, kind hippies come back. Maybe they can teach society today a thing or two.

To clarify, "we don't know the long term effects because we ignore science, we ignore history, we ignore clinical studies from Israel Spain etc, and we only listen to what politicians told us in the 1930's which is the last time they updated their baseless stance on this"

happy to say i haven't had a single drop of alcohol in over 3 years, hollly shit alcohol is one FUCKED UP DRUG when it gets a hold of you. "It's not a problem until it becomes a problem", ok but when it does you're going down a one-way rabbithole attached by a very thin thread - lose grip of that and you're DEAD, it's that simple. With a bit of luck you won't kill anyone else on your way out either. Now, what happens when you smoke too much pot all day everyday?... you just RELAX, A LOT. You can still get things done, it doesn't change who you are, and you don't cause anyone else any issues that could be described as anything but minor. It's time for laws which MADE SENSE, which RESPECTED SCIENCE, and which we can be PROUD OF.

I want it to be legalised. A lot of people who have marijuana problems are too scared to see psychologists because they fear they will get dobbed in and get arrested. With it legalised they will be more open about their marijuana use and actively seek help if they happened to have a problem. Also it would be pretty cool seeing very high quality organic weed in a brick and motar store. I think Australia should follow the Washington laws. No plants are allowed but you are allowed to easily go to the store and pick up a jar of high quality weed. It is pointless to send somebody who smoked one joint to a school teaching the ill effects of marijuana. It's better to let the person know if they have a problem and let them seek effective treatment. Also a great thing about legalisation is the lack of marijuana lacing which is actually why a lot of people get addicted to marijuana. Pure weed is about as addictive as a cup o' joe.

For them to sit there laughing with bob marley music in the background then saying we're on the verge of legalised medicinal cannibis blah blah blah is all a big joke. I'm sure the parents with epilectic kids or cancer sufferers needing access to medicine yesterday would find that little segment really useful and amusing. Even though they've started growing the plants as of a few months ago there's no telling when anything is going to happen or when/if the patients will even get access. No ones on the verge of anything and to suggest such nonsense then carry on with that childish little segment is a bit ordinary at this time. The whole thing seemed like a big ego trip for a few people on the panel.
@DaveWhoa

Its also important to remember THC and CBD (indeed, all the 100+ cannabinoids) are _unique, individual medicines_. Legalising CBD oil alone is simply not good enough, because while CBD is amazing for things like seizures and nausea just ask anyone who's been through chemotherapy needing an appetite boost or help getting to sleep - you need THC there because CBD doesn't help much with either. Simply because THC makes you feel good is no reason for it to remain a Schedule 9 drug alongside heroin and methylamphetamine. If it was about impairment then alcohol would also be Schedule 9. It can't be about addiction because cannabinoids aren't physically addictive, but we don't see cigarettes in Schedule 9 either. IT JUST MAKES ZERO SENSE, AND IS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO PATIENTS AND FAMILIES. It's about time we had laws we can be _proud_ of, laws that make _common sense_, as opposed to the "reefer madness" US propaganda of the 1930s.

Years back I wrote to the then Queensland health minister and explained what you said. It included the mass deaths from tobacco and the fact that the Australian government profits from it with the taxes. I didn't even use any cannabis. I knew from past use as a young adult that it is not as bad as it was being made out to be. And Tobacco and alcohol takes thousands of lives and destroys families. The response was "do I need help with an addiction". WTF.

"Why do people have to be drugged up to have a good time?" They just need a nice chardonnay. Ever notice how prohibitionists will use an anecdote to support their position and completely dismiss opposing evidence, hard or soft. And the dismissal of recreational over medicinal. The whole thing is about nutrition. Babies are born fucked up and people die of liver cancer because of recreational alcohol use. We have bowel cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and a degraded environment because of a dietary preponderance of wheat, fructose, saturated animal fats and palm oil. Recreation is not a dirty word, it is exactly that; re-creation. We all have an endogenous cannabinoid system every bit as crucial to our functioning as the systems that use the well known "drugs" serotonin and testosterone.

After a few times youre body regulates it better and it does not affect you anywhere near as badly.
