Legally Blonde is definitely one of those must watch movies so obviously it's a movie we had to do a commentary and reaction video for. It's a pretty simple story but it's well told and a lot of fun so we hope you enjoy our commentary and reaction for it!

This movie is, I feel, at its core, about women supporting each other. The sorority girls supporting Elle, the advisor telling Elle what she needs and not disregarding her, Elle helping Paulette with self confidence, Elle and Viviane supporting each other, Elle keeping Brook's secret, the teacher telling her not to give up... I think that's beautiful.

Elle Woods is also one of the only female characters in early 2000s movies who‘s portrayed ultra feminine - lots of pink, glitter, loves fashion, etc. - who isn‘t a bully. Think Sharpay Evans and Regina George. Elle‘s looks are exactly like theirs, but her character is the complete opposite. Most of those movies had the effect that many young girls would try and separate themselves from anything stereotypically female when they entered their teens, in order to avoid the negative stereotypes. Elle encompasses everything those other movies told us was bad, and she is kind and successful. I think that‘s huge.

A friend of mine recently pointed out that Warner supposedly went to get the ring right before breaking up with Elle, and that the motivation was to get serious. Elle was a side piece. This also explains why Vivian is initially so hostile - she only knew her as the other woman.

I never saw it as him dating them at the same time, but more as him having Vivian in mind already as his backup plan when it was time to get serious. I love that the movie is much like the main protagonist, Elle. It's easy to jump to conclusions about them, and there's a lot of areas where you kinda expect... shallowness? Like, parts can seem painfully cliché at first, but notable don't really go like you might initially fear. Elle and the movie are girly, earnest, colorful, and a lot deeper than given credit for! Their greatest strength is embracing who they are, rather than trying to be something more "academic" and masculine! It's really refreshing, and feminist too!

@libelulaocre500

I think both the musical and the movie both portray their relatioship very different to what any other romantic sitcom with a woman protagonist did for years. In the movie is more subtle and it really doesn´t change much. In the musical, Emmett helps her discover her potential with motivation and support. During the whole musical, he is a nice person who truly sees her potential but her lack of friends for support since everyone underestimates her. Elle also helps him become more profesional to be taken more seriously. They both suffer from the same stigma and shallowness in different perspectives, yet they help each other rise to the top without compromising their essence. The musical adds this and I find it the most beautiful thing ever.
@laurasalas8375
@laurasalas8375 3 года назад
I really don’t like the way the musical does it though, because they set it up as “Elle needs Emmetts help in order to succeed in law school,” but in the movie she did it on her own
@Probablylani
@Probablylani 3 года назад
@@laurasalas8375 But the musical sets it up as a trade-off. Emmett doesn’t just “make Elle suceed.” He believes in her and pushes her. Same for Paulette, as she constantly pushes Elle to succeed, in her own way. The trade-off happens with Elle pushing Emmett to become more dignified and look the part; to be more suave, ultimately becoming more confident in his abilities. They become really close friends who support each other. Then through the bond, they realize they love being around each other. They are each other’s biggest cheerleader. It’s pretty awesome (and healthy, might I add).

The Marilyn line that Warner says at the beginning may also be a hint about how smart Elle really is. The breakup scene was always interesting to me. When Elle brings up hair color on the surface it's to make her dumb but what's more interesting is that those are the only differences she's sees between them. Her ex is comparing them by looks/stereotyping. Elle sees them both as fully capable women with skills and talents that don't make wither lesser and there for thinks hair color is what's the issue.

44:17 The term you're looking for is "quid-pro-quo sexual harassment." Usually occurs in workplace, essentially rewarding a person with advancement (e.g. job, promotion, raise) in exchange for sex. Too bad Elle never takes legal action on this, because she'd have a good case with Vivian as a witness.

made this comment on the first upload but want to do it again since it got some great replies the first time One part I always love was Warner's "I need a Jackie Kennedy not a Marylin Monroe" bit because of just how wrong it it. Contrary to popular belief, Marylin Monroe was a smart and educate woman, and Jackie Kennedy was THE fashion icon of her time. Both women were very smart and fashion forward, yet Warner discredits one just because she acts somewhat ditzy, which, by the way, she only did because the studio told her too. It was also the studio that told her to change her name from Norma Jean (btw I personally love the name Norma Jean!) and to dye her hair. That's right, Marylin was actually a brunette! If anything, Elle perfectly emulates both women!💕

Sure, her major was in Fashion Merchandising but that's a business major, and the fake school she was at was supposed to be UCLA so she has a business degree from a major college, probably went to a great high school, had a 4.0, and a 179 on the LSATS and at that point, she would have been automatically accepted so why did they make it sound like she was such a bad risk? She even had leadership experience as president of a major chapter of what is apparently a huge sorority, since Delta Nus are shown as everything from cheerleaders to senators. Harvard should have been desperate to take her. She should have been able to get in if she turned in a cocktail napkin with her name written on it. So why make up the bullshit excuse of "multiculturalism" to justify letting in an extremely qualified and highly driven candidate just for laughs? 44:29 It’s even worse when the boss/authority figure calls you in the office and whips “something” out. You were surprised when Elle’s law professor put his hand on her knee. Every female on the planet has that happen to her at least 5 times by age 25. Never expecting it. Always taken off guard. Career, job, hopes and plans dashed and you have to walk out and start all over again from scratch. In my day, the police did absolutely nothing.

i cried so many times during this, words can't describe how much i love this story and how much i love elle. you really should watch the musical based on this movie, it's really great and emment and elle's relationship is more elaborate and makes more sense but doesn't become the main focus of the story it's so amazing.

Elle is a great example of how a girl can be hyper feminine, but also be smart, clever, kind, hardworking, observant, etc.. Never judge a person for how they look, and don’t base people on stupid stereotypes, because people are much more than that.

The bend and snap, the bend is obvious, draw attention to the butt. The snap, the weird hand position is up boop height and to the sides to give the chest a bit of a squeeze and lift for extra bounce. Thus the weird tyrannosaurus hands at the snap. Accentuate rear then chest, the bend and snap.

Fun facts: The nervous tall guy, David, is played by Oz Perkins, son of Anthony Perkins who played Norman Bates in “Psycho”. Also, the last two scenes (confrontation with Warner and the graduation) weren’t originally in the script; the movie initially ended with Elle winning the case, kissing Emmett and then a year later she and a now-blonde Vivian handing out pamphlets for the Blonde Legal Defense Fund they started together. Test audiences disliked the typical romcom ending and wanted closure with Warner and Elle so the writers rewrote the ending we have now. Reese Witherspoon had cut her hair by the time of the reshoots so in both those scenes she was wearing a wig and Luke Wilson had shaved his head for another movie so he wore a wig for the graduation scene. Both Reese and Matthew Davis (Warner) filmed their parts of the scenes in London due to Reese filming another movie at the same time and for the graduation scene, the rest of the main actors in the audience filmed their reactions in L.A.

So she finished her four year “university” to get her bachelors degree. Grad school is when you apply to other schools to further your education in a specific discipline in your field. And no, dorms don’t look like that. It’s a sorority house and they don’t look like that either haha

I'm a natural blonde and grew up under the stereotype that blonde females (on tv, movies, ) are dumb. I was told all the blonde jokes and asked if I understood them, most men expected me to be a slut - saw me as a side piece of meat, I was ignored in conversations, and told I wouldn't amount to much and to just live off my looks 😐 I was so mad and did not even act like any of those things. What's even weirder is that programming was so ingrained in my generation that with 2 degrees in behavioral health, brain health, and 4 certifications in nutrition, fitness, accounting and quantum studies...I'm still seen as a ditz and not taken seriously by them. It's nice to have the next generation to talk to cause they don't really do most of that. This movie 🍿 was fun, great reaction!

This movie taught me about internalized misogyny. I didn’t have any interest in it when it came out in theaters because I was sure it was just another dumb blond movie. I didn’t give it a chance. Now it’s a comfort movie for me. I watch it all the time and I remember that it’s not about appearances or style. It’s about character and action.

Just some context: No a normal american college dorm isn't like that. Elle lived in a sorority house. A Greek inspired group for students. Sorority for women. Fraternity for men. They are known for partying and drinking, but were originally for exceling the studies of chosen students and giving back to local communities through brotherhood or sisterhood. 8:07 "one college to another" yes she was in undergraduate college and is moving to law school which is like graduate school the next step. College steps usually go Associate-2yrs. Undergraduate/Bachelor's-4yrs. Graduate/Medical/Law/Master's/Professional-another 3-4yrs.

The Legally Blonde Musical is AMAZING!! Plus it's on RU-vid (not the best quality, because it was taped in the early 2000s, but it's still worth it). Also in the musical/play all her friends and parents are supportive of Elle going to Harvard and Warner has a bit more character to him. Also Vivian doesn't treat her like being hit on by the professor was her fault (the professor forces a kiss on her in the play), she takes her side immediately.

This movie is so refreshing. There are so many movies where a “strong female character” is just “not like other girls” and that’s all there is to them. Elle embraces her femininity instead of rejecting it in order to appear strong and capable. She sticks to who she is and maintains kindness and her infectiously bubbly personality. She also doesn’t go with the “strong woman who doesn’t need a man” thing, which is fine, it’s just very overdone. She’s so inspiring 💕
