I watched this for the first time during the early 00’s after a Greek fan sub group completed the translation of the whole series. I was blown away by the complexity and nuance of the story, reaching a level of realism that is quite rare not just in anime, but any visual media. There is a multitude of characters but you will slowly become so familiar with them that once they are gone you will feel their loss. Forget the cartoonish Manichaeism of good versus evil. This is an epic saga of flawed men who try their best to serve their values (or interests) and while succeeding on some levels they always fail miserably on many occasions. I re-watched the series this month and it was still hitting hard on so many levels. Prepare yourselves for many manly tears to be shed. The political questions asked by this series (but don’t expect to be given an answer that’s up to you) remain relevant today.
Thanks for sharing this. Whats funny is the relevancy of the political questions in this interstellar setting make this timeless. I didnt know it was fsnsubbed that early by a Greek group. There are real emotional points in this show that dont go away after a single viewing. When the show ends...you feel bad that the story is coming to an end and that to me marks a great show. Thanks for watching this and hope you check the channel out and see what interests you. Stay Nerdporeal!
To Japanese people and producers, something like "fansubbing" is nothing more than "simple theft". This "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" is one example, but the majority of anime is created by Japanese producers for Japanese consumers. Please stop stealing that. All Japanese people find it unpleasant. If you want to watch Japanese works, pay the license fees properly.
Hi, I’m a Japanese. I first saw this when I was in high school. After seeing the Episode82, I can’t get over from the shock for about a month. By the way, is there a easy way, such as a streaming service to watch this in Europe or in North America ? I want to recommend this wonderful work to who says there are interested in Japanese animation. But the same time, I think I have to tell them how you can watch it (maybe with a English subtitles). Maybe you know, we can’t make these kinds of huge chronicle truly into animation. This animation was made when the Japanese economy was in peak. After that, the long depression came and the animation industry went to cost reductions. The new version of the animation, “The legend of the galactic hero’s -die neue these” is a truly animated work from the original novel. But it has reduced many episodes and supporting characters from the book because of the limitation of budgets. The original series of the animation is widely applaud today, (some calls it “the legend of the galactic voice actors ” since most of all the famous voice actors and actresses are appearing ). But in that time, it was criticized from the novel fans because was adapted a lot. Maybe that’s why they decided to make a new one. But the situation seems not so well…
Thank you so much for sharing this. Arigato Gosaimasu! The best way to watch in the United States is through the streaming service HiDive. I agree on Die Neue These, it is more inline with the book but looks like a generic modern anime series lacking the major gravitas that the original series had. That episode shocked me too. Only thing that can compare is Game of Thrones and The Red Wedding scene. This show is way better than Game of Thrones in my opinion.
@@NerdporealI mean game of thrones last 4 seasons are pretty shit so it isn’t really a fair comparison 😂, but the first 4 seasons of got are pretty clearly for me better than lotgh and the novel for got are even better. A song of ice and fire (got) isn’t even one of my favourite series honestly as I far prefer stuff like the visual novels umineko, Fata Morgan series, white album 2,muv luv etc and the book series realm of the elderlings, second apocalypse, book of the new sun, the first law etc. and my favourite series of all time by miles is the book series malazan.
@danielgwynne7266 i feel the slog begins with shadow rising. I had to lower my expectations going forward. Currently reading Fires of Heaven now, a slow burn.
This series is soo good, probably one of my only 10/10 series, also helped I saw it at a pivotal time in my life, or was watching this what made it pivotal?
Gray, I know you will like this one. It is up there with B5 and DS9 as one of the most epic stories I have ever seen. People call it GOT in space, but even that is a poor comparison. Way better than GOT
Got this in my algo today and I might as well ask this here… I watched this something like 10 years ago and it became my favorite anime story of all time. It truly feels epic in scale, the music is beautiful and fitting, and the art will always be beautiful to me. Tried watching the remake several years back and didn’t like it for whatever reason, just didn’t grab me like the original Is there a place to easily watch the episodes? Doesn’t even have to be for free, I’ve just always wanted to recommend it to my Gundam/drama loving friends but I’ve never seen the original series on a streaming service. I haven’t checked places like Crunchyroll recently but if you have any info I’d appreciate it!
I'm mostly intruiged in its masterful portrayal of violence. Specifically space combat. Not sure where to find it, but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks for the video!
The blu-ray is excellent and the subs are easy to read compared to other fansubs but it is no longer being sold. Hidive looks fine, the subs are the same since hidive is part of sentai film works. Same quality too. Either or, I haven't noticed a major difference
@Nerdporeal imma finally take the plunge on the $200 season 1 set without subs. I managed to add and sync subs for an unsubbed version of 'Macross - Do You Remmember Love', so there is hope. I'll hold-off on the remaining 3 seasons until I can confirm success.
@Nerdporeal There are two ways I go about doing this. Can't add to the same disc per se, but if using a media player app like VLC or similar, you can add a subtitle file to the app. Sort of like a temporary subtitle that you can add from a file in a folder. I download the subs from opensubtitles.org (.org! Don't mix it up, trust me lol), but sometimes they are out of sync (usually offset wrong). This can be fixed in vlc by pressing the G and H keys but it is ideal to edit the subtitle file and then save the changes (so you don't agree to play with the offset every single time you watch the vid). However, once the subtitle file timing/offset is fixed, one might as well permanently add it to the movie/episode. To do this it is necessary to start by making a backup copy of the movie/episode from the disc to your computer. From there I would use a media encoder like Handbrake to import and add the desired subtitles file. I've got good news, I just recorded a video outlining the whole process. I just need to eidt and tidy it up a bit.
If i remember the music used is copyrighted to the various philharmonic orchestras....Berlin, Dresden, etc. Hence why the blu ray took a while to come out.
I’ve showed this to an Austrian friend of mine. Every time the empire was on screen he’d recognize a new reference to German history, from characters and ships sharing names with important figures and places, to buildings being replicas of actual places, to even the fonts on signs being the actual writing styles that were actually popular in 18th century Prussia. The level of depth and detail was honestly amazing.
Agreed. I loved the period piece element of this combined with sci fi. I think the Kaisers palace shares a name with a real one, Sanssouci for example. Yeah it is astounding how well thoughtout this was!
Never thought of that! I need to brush up on my history and art of war....hahaha. Hope you check out the channel and find something you like. Thanks for checking this out.
Awesome. I always get sad when it gets to the end, saying goodbye to the characters. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you check out the channel and find something that may interest you. Stay Nerdporeal
I've heard how great this anime is for years. I've been watching it chronologically and can say it matches its reputation. I also look forward to seeing more anime reviews from you.
Im absolutely convinced I will never find a piece of fiction that will surpass my evaluation of Ginga Eiyuu. Watching this absolutely unequeled incarnation of greatness two years ago changed my view and judgement of not only anime, but fiction in general. The downside of this is that since then, I have found it significantly harder to genuinely enjoy stories. I was already a quite logical judge and seeker of "grandeur" in stories to begin with, rarely finding enjoyment in slice of lifes, comedies and so on, and having high demands for well-crafted plots, and characters, but this story made my standards equivalent to that of a critique. It has quite frankly felt like I have been chasing the shadow of this show since watching it, unable to grasp it. Having just dropped another "classic" in Cowboy Bebop at about episode 6 for finding it unsatisfactory two hours ago(though if Im frank I personally believe that is not because Im a bratty elitist, but because Cowboy Bebop is a severely overrated show, and while not a bad show, It isnt better than above average at most, which simply doesnt do it for me anymore), and also feeling dissatisfaction with likes of Senkan Yamato(remake), and many more established series, I do find myself wondering whether I can find something I can genuinely enjoy anymore. I seem to have gone a bit off topic, it would seem. But well, I presume that I got the point that I consider Ginga to be a nearly perfect piece of fiction that Im yet to find anything remotely equal to across.
I feel the same but I disagree about Bebop. It's up there with Monster, LOGH, and Escaflowne as my top favorite shows period. The end of Bebop like Logh never brings a dry eye. LOGH is series that has more gravitas than any other anime show. Thank you for sharing all that. How do you feel about Die Neue These?
@@Nerdporeal Im gonna be real, I havent looked into Die Neue. But the length of it speaks enough for me, quite frankly. From what Ive heard about it, I cant see it matching up to the original adaptation, naturally, as the original adaptation is akin to a one of a kind occurance, one that will never again happen. The adaptation itself is in my opinion a miracle among miracles, and coincidence upon coincidence perfectly matching together to create something trully spectacular and unmatched. Also I trully dont see anything in Bebop. Its whole storyline is just a cliche trope copypaste(even for the times it was adapted during), with unremarkable story telling. One minute of flashbacks is not going to make me feel anything about whatever past Spike has had, and what led to him shooting some bystander A, B and some guy that has absolutely no logical goal in his villainy besides, well, being a villain. The whole character cast is just a trope fiesta too. Escaflowme is something I have absolutely never heard of, actually. Sounds like some predecessor to my now absolutely most hated thematic and the reason Im severely disappointed in the current state of anime, none other than the isekai genre.
Escaflowne is an isekai mecha made by Shoji Kawamori in the 90s. 26 episodes. Tarot cards is a major theme as the heroine can use them for predictions. I really liked it. With Bebop, I cared enough about the characters with the writing doing its job to get me invested. I always dread the ending as it nearly. I watched season 1 of die neue these which covers the first book and I wasn't impressed with the new character designs, it didn't even finish the first book. Haven't watched anymore since
@@Nerdporeal Maybe Its just me and my incompatibility with the writer? Samurai Champloo was made by the same guy and I borderline hated it for again, being utterly unoriginal, cliche and finding the story telling bland and unremarkable, though it was significantly worse than Bebop, Bebop at least had some watchable aspects, unlike Champloo. Though I trully cannot comprehend how in any world could anyone consider these works a masterpiece, It could be that they just arent compatible with me.
@@cgomega3987 Well, I guess its not for everyone. All I can say is that the series Bebop in particular was entertaining in so many different ways, comedically, tragically, and the stories were real interesting and I love the style. That's why I like it. Champloo was fun but I didn't like it nearly as much. What else would you say would possibly come close to the quality of LOGH?
Love his story arc. Such a likeable fella and one of the most morally good characters in fiction. His arc always hits me in the feels without spoiling anything.
It is, simply put, *the* most epic show I have ever had the pleasure to watch, but I would be badly remiss to not add a big ole "but" as a caveat. Getting attached to characters in this show is not a good idea, because so few of them actually survive to the end.
Yeah I am interested in checking this out now. Not sure when, but I feel this is something worthy of a weekly rewatch. At the very least I may be down to do a special review show for this one every other week. Gonna need to contemplate...
@@Nerdporeal oh I may be interested, but truth be told, your video sold me on it. It's more of finding the time and deciding whether to slot it into the Tuesday show, run its own live special or pre-recorded vids. Either way, I'd like to try and get you in on it.
Awesome you discovered this now with shows mostly being mediocre quality compared to this. Thanks for stopping by. Hope you check out the rest of the channel. Stay Nerdporeal
Curious as to where you were able to access the originals in the West. Managed to see the remade series, and I’ve enjoyed it so far, but would definitely like to see the originals instead of DNT.
Gundam is in the Earth Sphere, LOGH is in interstellar space. Both shows have no aliens and are war epics. LOGH is more political and intellectual than Gundam. More for an older crowd. Gundam Wing is a poor comparison....lol
@@Nerdporeal haha I haven’t seen Gundam since I was a tween so maybe nostalgia makes me more fond of it. LoGH looks great, I’ll try to check it out, thanks for the intro!
In terms of character usage, Dusty Attenborough was in the first episode but not the book was the only difference i noticed. First season of the original had more content including stellar original stories like The Klopstock Incident and others. I think the original is still better on many levels including character design, music, and gravitas
@@Nerdporeal Is a shorter retelling of this original OVA. Well, there is like 48 episodes right now, so I think is going to be like half the runtime of the original series.
I actually just finished it tonight. No real spoilers below for anyone unfamiliar. My only complaints are that I wish we spent more time with Jessica and Greenhill on screen, and the Church needing more development. 15 more episodes would have allowed for that, and wow im asking for a 125 episode series for the sake of MORE galactic heroes lol.
1 minor correction, in the video yoy state that it is not hard scifi, but thw Light Novels and even the show are very grounded. The shields are powered by the same generators used to give their vessels artificial gravity, in addition to a particle sheild to deflect away electron beam cannon shots. Missles are pretty self evident. In the books there are references to rail cannons but in the show we only see them using a mix of neutron and electron beam armaments. The armor for their ships is meters of layered material like modern day CHOABHAM, and the suits are relatively bulky, not 40k style power armor. Essentially other than artificial gravity generators, hyperdrive, and Zephyr particles, everything is hypothetically feasible to build or recreate.
@@Nerdporeal Fair enough, all of those have very grounded depictions of space, with less technological intervention ( I haven't seen Gundam so I'll take your word for that one)
@@Nerdporeal It is the informal name given to composite armor, developed in the UK in the 1960's for use on tanks. It has layers of varying alloys of steel, ceramics, and other materials to defeat or reduce the effectiveness of kinetic penetrators( Armor piercing tank rounds) and high explosive rounds.
I think it is actually mentioned in Gundam, this type of armor. That franchise and the real robot genre can get pretty technical along with space closer to home and more believable. Thats why something like Gundam is more hard science fiction.....though even gundam has fleet destroying giant beam weapons
@@Nerdporeal but they are only in 720p quality, the footage clips u used for the video are sick in terms of quality, do u know where i can watch that version?
They move we just don't see it. Die Neue These addresses this, especially showing the Astarte battles war of attrition ring formation. I agree with you but it hasn't really bothered me. Plus it is a partial period piece.
Their ships are built for it with all weapons facing forward and in grand emptiness of space it seems more realistic, than point blank brawls of Star Wars. Most battles are resolved with "bayonet charges" anyway.
Love LOGH, trying to write a story involving LOGH. A what if sort to speak. Anyway thanks for speaking about this series, doesn’t get enough attention.
I have been meaning to make this video for a while. My channels purpose is to recommend underrated things while doing retrospectives and reviews. Hope you check the channel out and see something that interests you. Stay Nerdporeal!
@@Nerdporeal Your channel looks interesting, Ill stick around. recently I have been looking into animations/cartoons and if you don't have already, Monster (2004) and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō (1998) seem kinda overlooked. Cartoon movies often get more praise and are easier to find than some obscure OVA, but still these could also use a boost: The Plague Dogs (1982), Angel's Egg (1985) In this corner of the world (2016) Anyway, good tidings
Hence why i teased Monster at the end of the video. I mainly done game retrospectives, movie and tv ones too. Loads of nostalgia here. I hope you enjoy. Great tidings!
The remake is incomplete and may not be complete for several years at the rate they are going. The original tells the full story with some amazing additional stories that gel well with the source material.
Remake loses much without narrator talking faster than you're able to read subs and lack of classical music. I don't understand that change. Not like they're copyrighted pieces or anything.
It is a very Beautiful Anime, as a person interested in history this Anime just hits really hard, watched it Years ago and still can't stop thinking about the Story.. This video Re-ignited that sense of wonder when I first watched it.
It’s clearly, probably, not intended but my modern brain is completely unable to read the relationship between Reinhard and kirkheis as anything but queer coded and more than simply friends
Reinhard can come off that way but i think that is not the case. Sieg was Reinhards family, his brother from anutha mutha. They were close but i dont think it was eros type of love. Sieg had the hots for Reinhards sister
This magnificent series absolutely stands at the top, among the best any medium has to offer. The depth of the story, the depiction of a plethora of characters, the music, the direction, all are superb. Also for Sci-fi lovers it probably features the most interesting strategic space battles that I've seen. In fact either as a whole or in any category it's quite difficult to think of many equal series or movies, whether anime or not.
Hahaha, better than GOT in my opinion. More like I, Claudius meets Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Space. Thanks for commenting and hope you check out the rest of the channel.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is my favorite anime. I watched it one episode per week for 3 years. Then I read the novels. It's a very good story that I'll definitely watch and read again many times.
Reinhard von Musel is top 5 anime characters of all time for, in what is, without a doubt, the single greatest anime of all time. It's technically not my favorite. Gotta rep that Dragon Ball love. But LotGH is unmatched in nearly every single category you would slap on it.
Die Neue These remake is on Crunchyroll. Original series and OVAs and movies are on HIDIVE. Thanks for watching! Hope you get a chance to check out the rest of the channel. Stay Nerdporeal!
7 or 8 years ago, this was recommented to ma and it is the best anime i´ve ever saw. It´s a 9,9/10, because a 10 i flawlessly perfect and as everyone should know, "nothing is perfect"
Sure with real history and plenty Romance of the Three Kingdoms among countless others. But yeah.... Hope you check out the rest of the channel and thanks for watching. Stay Nerdporeal
Who me? I watched the series several times over the course of 15 years. My taste in most entertainment and not just other anime has increased in standards. Only shows that come close are Babylon 5, Star Trek Deep Space 9, and the anime series Monster. Thanks for stopping by and hope you check out the channel. Stay Nerdporeal!
@@Nerdporeal nice selection there. Me too, my exposure to it is a bit late but i also rewatch it several times during the quarantine era of pandemic. My LOTGH experience is like first time eating tonkotsu ramen, afterwards forawhile all soup just taste weak 🤣.
Unique character design, classical.music makes it feel more timeless. Actually complete. Who knows how long it will take if the modern adaptation ever gets completed at all? I didnt watch beyon s1.
@@Nerdporeal I got introduced to the show through the modern adaptation only to learn that the story was already completed in the original. Great video btw. I loved Yamato 2199 from the modern adaptation. The sequel felt forced though.
Hey I watched this series and enjoyed it, enough to ask someone to get me the light novels as a gift. When I got volume 1, another person in the room regarded Lotgh as an anime with nazi imagery. I didn’t know how to respond but ever since then I’ve been worried about expressing my admiration for the anime around others. Is this the wrong way to approach the situation?
Nazi imagery? Nonsense. Dont be afraid to express and discuss what you truly enjoy and dismiss the ignorance of othera. I started my channel based on this philosophy and i hope you check out the channel and find something that may interest you. Stay Nerdporeal!
I too wanted novels as a gift when US release got finished, but never got them at the end. :< Maybe I'm too stuck in old days when getting foreign book ment transatlantic shipping costs double of book alone, but even without it, whole series is expensive. As for nazi imagery, well, there is some. You can't denay it with crowds hailing name of their new dictator in prussian uniform.
@@antonisauren8998 i’d argue that specific example is not, as that’s happened multiple times in the past, not just in nazi germany. The person had only seen 2 episodes of the anime remake, so they didn’t even get to that part. I think they saw germanic named characters and a blond hair blue eye main character and thought it must be nazi imagery.
There is no nazi imagery in the series at all. There is though a lot of Prussian influence in the empire. Despite the napoleonic era facade though, If I had to describe the series in a phrase I would say Peloponnesian War in space. That describes better the struggle of two political systems, but without having one standing out as ‘’wrong’’
I felt similarly when i first saw this but with Bebop and Escaflowne and original FMA at the time. Brotherhood wasnt out yet. I think i might still prefer the original fullmetal despite the different ending
@@Nerdporeal brotherhood was the “gateway” anime that got me into anime, after a friend of mine pestered me into watching it. I firmly believe LOGH was my final destination in my 3 year journey in watching anime. Nothing comes close to it in terms of story and characters.
A truly grand epic saga, this anime is so very much on my short list of 11/10 anime alongside Armored Trooper VOTOMS, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still, Wings of Honneamise, Gunbuster, and Macross: Do You Remember Love.
I have seen all those mentioned except for the Getter Robo one that blatantly steals the name of a 50s classic. Hope you check out the channel and Stay Nerdporeal
