This is a comparison of the music and sound effects found in the Famicom Disk System version and NES version of The Legend of Zelda. It's meant to serve as a companion to a book I wrote about all the differences between the Japanese version of the game and the English version, including text, history, related merchandise and more. If you enjoy the Zelda series, retro games, or are just interested in game translation, this book is for you!

Just an observation.. The Key Item Obtained sound is the same on both versions. It's just that the sound chip on the NES is busy with another sound to play the full thing. To hear it in game, start a new game and grab the sword. Just as you grab it, press start to bring up the menu. You'll hear all the channels which will make it sound just the same as the FDS version. The reason you hear it on the FDS version fully is because it's using the sound chip on the disk drive for the item pickup sound effect. If you try Zelda no Densetsu 1, the cart version of the Japanese game, it sounds just like the US NES version where you have to press start to hear the full thing.

The prototype game over theme is really creepy, especially with the scratchy instrumentation. I wonder if that was intentional since the final one isn't as clear as the ending theme. I personally think the music and jingles on the FDS are mostly superior, even the title theme. However, most of the sound effects sound better on NES since they use the same instruments, NES just has a less tinny sound. They just sound punchier and more satisfying in general.

Considering how the game is set in the Downfall Timeline and considering the condition and status of Hyrule at the time, yeah, the creepiness of the prototype game over theme does make sense (in a way) when you think about it. 🤔

A lot of the FDS version's instruments seem to have a weird hiss to them, leaving the NES versions sounding much crisper. However, the "you got the thiiiing" and the ending song both sound a lot better on the FDS, I think, and its richer arrangement of the opening theme is certainly interesting.

I don't know, I feel like the NES sounds congested. For all of them.
@Atlink
@Atlink 2 года назад
Pretty sure part of that is due to how the audio is being captured. If being captured via an emulator, this is most likely because there's not filtering being applied either through the nature of the console, or through any filtering circuitry. The emulator just adds straight output that tends to be much more harsh in tone. You'll notice a lot of emulators for consoles that relied on synth audio, rather than sample audio, to have a low-pass filter, or a lower bitrate for audio which removes a lot of the hiss.

Interesting. The music mostly sounds better* on the Famicom (except that I think the main theme sounds better if the notes are held out longer like in the NES version), but the sound effects are hit and miss. The ones that still sound like music sound better on the Famicom, but others don't. In particular, the bomb and doors sound much better on the NES, deeper sounds much closer to what they are supposed to be. Getting hurt sounds like a small cry from link, what you expect when you get hurt. The boss sounds sound like actual roars on the NES, although neither have good howls. The enemy death sound depends on how you perceive them: the first is a cry, the second sounds more like you've scored a point. As does the sword, as neither sound like a sword. The difference is that the Famicom sounds like it is fading away as the projectile gets away from you, while the NES one sounds like it hit something. *The FDS also has a tinny quality to its sounds that some may find annoying, while the NES cuts off any of the higher pitches. But still, the sound quality is better.

beefcurtainz69 The FDS had an extra FM synth chip so the sounds weren't available on the NES. How would that affect an Everdrive? I'm not sure, probably depends on how the Everdrive itself handles FDS images and if it also emulates the extra synth chip.

Title Screen and Intro - FDS, chime - NES, Key Item Obtained - either, Flute - NES, FInal Dungeon 0 either, Ending - FDS, Link Dying - NES, Game Over - FDS, Getting A Heart - NES, Getting Rupees - FDS, Getting Items - FDS, Item Appearence - FDS, Sword Shooting - FDS, Bombs - NES, Opening Doors - NES, Enemy Deaths - NES, Boss Sound A, B, C - NES, Boss Howls - FDS, Getting Hurt - FDS, Game Over Cursor - NES. So that's a score of 10 for FDS, and 13 for NES or points for the Boss sounds could count as one making it a tie. I'm not sure which I like better honestly. Did the FDS not have access to the NES sounds, too? I always thought the FDS had an additional sound card. I don't get why they wouldn't use the main sound NES sounds for the lower pitched sound effects.

+ZipplyZane The NES was meant to have a similar accessory attach to the bottom of the console. So the necessary pins were moved to the unused expansion port. NES games could not use expansion sound through the cartridge port like Famicom cartridge games could (although it sounds like it's possible to do that with a modded console, but not on stock hardware).

spartonberry neat, but I was wondering about the other direction. Could the FDS still use the stock famicom sound chip? It just seems to me that using a mixture would have been better: FDS for the music, Famicom/NES for the sound effects.

+ZipplyZane Yes because the FDS was primarily a storage medium for Famicom games. The Famicom Disk System RAM adapter is, functional to the Famicom, a special game cartridge. Part of the memory inside that cartridge is the BIOS that loads data from the disk (as well as routines for common operations like sending data to VRAM or reading the controller ports), and the rest of the cart is RAM to store and execute program data loaded from the disk.

+spartonberry See, I thought maybe you ahd to connect the audio jack straight to the FDS, and thus didn't have access to the Famicom sounds. Sounds like they just wanted to use the FDS's more advanced sound system, and didn't even try to use the base Famicom sound system until they ported it to the NES.

Other than the prototype game over music, the disk system sounds way too buzzy and mechanical. With the nes theres just crisper and the monsters actually sound like theyre roaring and not just buzzing
