I've been keeping track of all the suggestions for the next series and RuYi won out. (2nd place was between YanXi and MiYue). I love this drama but when I tell you it is the most depressing thing I have ever watched. 80+ episodes of taking your guts out and stomping on them. So yeah, no idea how to make that entertaining but I'll try lmao I haven't actually started so if you have any suggestions/critiques please let me know! Like: Do you prefer no background music? More clips from the show? Is my voice making your ears bleed? Well too bad, deal with it. But the other stuff, maybe I can change.
Your voice is so relaxing and I am happy you'll be doing Ruyi next but you're right Ruyi was a whole emotional rollercoaster. I also liked how you overlapped the 2 Zhen huans' lectures to the consorts, great editing.
I think your dialogue is perfect and I know my comment is not helpful at all because I wouldn't change anything you do. When i do a rewatch of your ZH series while i'm doing chores, i have you running in the background and you explain everything that is needed plus more. I'm so EXCITED!!!! thank you!!!! 🎉🤩
Woo! I've watched both of these so I won't have to worry about spoilers lol. I think your way of doing videos will still work, despite the sad stuff. Humor helps. ^_^
It's worth noting that there are a LOT of differences between the Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace book and the Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace drama. This is because in 2017 China started to clamp down a lot on palace shows, banning all "severely historically inaccurate" palace dramas from being aired from national TV (Yanxi escaped this despite all the historical errors because it was an Internet drama). This forced Ruyi and some other palace shows to change their script to be more in line with history, that's why in this drama the 3rd Prince was removed from the royal line for getting into contact with court officials (the most probable reason according to historians) instead of what was shown in Legend of Zhen Huan and the Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace books (attempting to woo his father's wife and defending the Emperor's brothers). Also another thing that was changed was how Hongli and Qingying met; in the books they met after she reluctantly married him out of convenience. Even though both didn't like each other at first they eventually fell in love and became each other's first love (青梅足马). If I'm not wrong the drama originally intended to show this, but then due to China's new restrictions on palace shows lengths they had to cut down the originally planned 130 episodes to 87 episodes, and unfortunately they thought Hongli and Qingying's romance before Hongli ascended the throne wasn't as important as other plot details. So instead they invented a simpler explanation of how their romance developed (childhood friends) that didn't require as much runtime as the more complicated (but in my opinion more interesting) explanation provided in the books
The book sounds even sadder as we'll get to see how they fell in love and their moments and then we'll also see their demise and how the ML let ruyi down so so many times :(((
one more thing regarding the differences: SART meddled in the production process by asking to "tone down the violence", such as: -Wei Yan'wan was actually 1000x an actual Ьîţćң -Hailan was a ๶ė victim, hence her initial "shrinking violet", but very savage (i.e. real killer of 2nd prince Yong'lian, Crown Prince Duanhui) -Ruyi committed šụıćįđз and made it appear Wei Yan'wan did it -Hailan & Xiangjian later pimped a concubine that was basically a Ruyi clone, and later on Qianlong allowed her to live in Yikun'gong Palace
Yay! Ruyi’s Royal Love is my favorite Chinese drama so far. Although I lost my emotional stability after watching it, all the details, the costumes, the dialogues, everything makes it worth watching and leaving with no regrets. Can’t wait to see your analysis and thank you for it!
Sameeee, I am childless and husbandless but when I tell you I felt every beat of this drama as if it were me. "Losing your emotional stability" is exactly right 😂
Time to handle the crying and the depressing things...and just to be clear...my heart belongs to Ruyi and not the emperor ( the emperor is easily manipulated, Ruyi has a home-vibe sweetheart) I will reserve my thoughts for your later videos :3
So guys the drama does not ends with zhen huan being the empress dowager there are lots scheming she's going to see from her daughter in laws ( yeah freely adopted son's wife's) I must say I like zhen huan in both ruyi's royal love and legend of zhen huan , the people who only have watched ruyi will never understand how zhen huan became like this Thank you so much for making your reviews I long for your reviews Hava nice day
I still firmly believe that these dramas are "connected" simply by the marketers who wanted to draw Zhen Huan's audience back to subscribe to a new show. But I definitely was not aware of all of this overlap. It's easy for the little details or whose child ends up where, and which wife shows up in a single scene of which series, etc etc. Great video!
The books that Legend of Zhen Huan and Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace are based upon were both written by Liu Lianzi, that's why the shows are connected and have overlap 😊
0:21 I just wanna mention that for all those who watched Fan Bingbing's The Empress of China - the actors for Emperor Taizong and Eunuch Wang De have time traveled to the Qing Dynasty after their characters' deaths to become Emperor Yongzheng and Eunuch Su Peisheng in Ruyi's Royal Love XD
It's so amazing to see it like this. The last generation to the second generation in two different perspectives. I'm a hard-core Yanxi palace fan, but still it's so cool and grasping how much history and plots play into these.✨️
I remember I used to think he was a bad actor because he was so expressionless ... But that is the character of YongZheng!😂 After seeing him cry after Zhenhuan's miscarriage, and seeing him in a few other shows, I have to agree with you- he's really good.
It is the drama that I keep lurking around back and forth. I love Ruyi, Hailan, Yihaun, Luyaun,… they are all trap in this sh*t life because of Qianlong. I can’t wait to see more eps
Thanks lmao I've been putting this off for a while now solely for the sake of how depressing it was and just an emotional roller coaster all around. Obviously zhen huan was kinda sad too but at least the FL ended up as the final winner and even though her life was tragic she didn't keep getting stomped on, not to mention how the emperor wasn't supposed to be the actual ML, it was guowang whose love was unconditional Anyways, your side insights and comments will make this sad tragic drama a bit light hearted thanks
You're right. I really think Zhenhuan struck the perfect balance between tragically depressing (RuYi) and unbelievably light-hearted (YanXi). And yet all 3 are still so good. I watch RuYi when I need a cry, and and YanXi when I need a laugh. Thank you! I will try my best lol even though I'm already cringing thinking about YunChe T.T
@@dramarecaps4217 yes agreed, Yanxi is perfect for being rather light hearted break but not being too ridiculous. A lot of people don't like it purely for the sake of it being "unrealistic" where the FL got away with literally everything and solved everything with ease but sometimes we do need a strong and a bit unrealistic FL once in a while
I’m down with you reviewing each episode but yeesh are we in for a tough ride. This was the most depressing drama I’ve ever seen in whole. Like damn, we need to have a happy hour after 😫
That's what I'm saying! It's soooooo sad and it just never lets up. After I watched it the first time, I never re-watched the later episodes (especially the YunChe drama) again.
@@dramarecaps4217 Yanxi palace would be a nice pick me up. I’ve seen both and as a western viewer, Yanxi was more enjoyable because it felt pretty balanced in emotions. Ruyi left me depressed, like I’m crying over a character who been long been dead for like 200 years. Maybe you can explain it more in depth though? There are a few references I never understood. Like where she says husband and wife begin together but end separate. Also the part about flowers beginnings still end? I do feel Ruyi is the overall better drama because the lengths in goes and I felt I was missing some references.
@@LittleClarinetPlayer flower beginnings - their marriage It started pretty like a flower. Then ended. Another translation was "Orchids bloom and fall, there is a timing to them." Once again, the flowers represent their marriage. It blinded prettily but wilted. One of the ending songs talks about this. The closing song of the first half of the series.
So excited for you to start this! As for suggestions I think the formula you used while editing Zhen Huan was perfect so keep that up with this one too. You’re awesome! 🔥
Somehow, this show didn’t gain the expected popularity after it premiered. I don’t know why. The costumes, photography, lines, acting, set and props, etc are movie level production.
the answer is basically: 1. "Ruyi" got stuck in SART purgatory bureaucracy because the production went with the conventional traditional plotline 2. "Yanxi Palace" stole its timeslot
@@user-ix1rp9ff3p the producer ofnYanxi palace is well known ofnhaving a habit of creating similar series with the unreleased one. Yanxi palace was not the first. Lot of People in China see him as a scumbag
Just found your channel! I’m thrilled to the moon! Finally, someone who explains all this and with humor to boot!👢 🥾 I’ve watched “Ruyi’s Royal Love In The Palace” twice now and am at episode 56 of “Empresses In The Palace”. I was guessing how these characters transition from Ruyi to Zhen Huan and now I know! Thanks so much for all your work!👌😊
Just finished the series and can't wait for your recap to explain things I'm sure I missed. It is SO hard to watch sometimes because sometimes it feels like nothing goes right for our heroine, but I still thought it was SO GOOD. Thanks for taking this on
I really hope that the next drama that you do is Yanxi Palace, and that we get a comparison between Ruyi and Yanxi Place, because I would love it so much. Plus, there’s the Yanxi sequel or we could see the daughter’s story
Thank you, I was so upset that I could no see the other episodes after the 49th one in English, thank you. Since I already saw ruyi I now understand a lot more.
I am very excited to watch RuYi alongside your recaps! Thank you for such wonderful videos. Legend of Zhen Huan had me crying and confused so many times, and your videos explained so much to me and lifted my spirits after having the crushed repeatedly. Thank you
I was always confused ‘cuz alot of people said that RRL was a sequel to EITP. I actually started off watching RRL first and never quite saw how these two dramas were in the same universe lol. But yeah, perhaps in the books it is a direct sequel, but for the dramas, at least, I don’t think the creators intended for RRL to be seen that way and instead just made it its own stand alone drama (although the Easter eggs and references are there).
Considering how long it took me to finish Zhenhuan... yes I will ask for your patience hahaha. But really thanks for watching- I do intend to do both of them :)
This was the first Chinese drama I watched and I was hooked! The sets and costumes are amazing and I thought the storyline was sophisticated, although somewhat dark and depressing. The next drama was Legend of Zhenhuan, which I didn’t enjoy as much after watching Ruyi. Not as well written, and that ugly old emperor was blechhhh. lol But I think my favorite is Story of Yanxi Palace. A bit campy but so much fun! I hope you consider that one in the future! Anyway, I look forward to your recaps!
Were both opposite. I Love the Legend of Zhen huan because every Plot keeps me on the edge of my seat. Having a not handsome emperor makes it more realistic. On the otherhand, I could not finish Yanxi palace because the Plot armor of the Protagonist is just too much. I don't feel scared for her safety at all. I'm currently watching Ruyi's royal Love in the Palace, i'm on episode 40 and I don't feel as hooked as I did in the legend of Zhen huan. I suggest u also watch Empress ki, it's really good too.
I don't how I missed this comment but scarlet hearts was my very FIRST Chinese historical drama! I would love to do that one one day 😁😁 I've never seen three kingdoms, but I think that one will involve a lot of studying haha
I enjoyed watching your recaps for Legend of Zhen Huan and can’t wait to see you do Ruyi Royal Love in the Palace. I also hope you do Story of Yanxi Palace and a comparison with the two since Yanxi and Ruyi are suppose to be about the same people from different points of view.
I hope so too! It's tough because it takes forever to watch, write, record and edit the video for even 1 episode (which is why I upload so slowly haha) but if you're willing to wait, I do plan on doing that one day :)
@@dramarecaps4217 Take your time. I would rather that content creators take a long time to plan and properly execute their videos than have something rushed and that many no sense
wait, I never knew the dialogue from 2:56 was the same in both dramas lol (tl;dr I watched "Zhen Huan" thru Netflix but the severely excoriated version shown in Amurrrica lol...while "Ruyi" I just watch clips here and there)
@@dramarecaps4217 1. "Empresses in the Palace" is no longer in Netflix in my area (besides, the English intro theme sucks, and I never understood the necessity of those opening & closing expositions of a random old lady (that doesn't look neither Sun Li nor Vivian Wu) in yellow _jifupao_ and early 20th century-esque _dalachi_ -billboard- headdress every epispde) 2. the team subbing the uploaded episodes are still working on ep.50
Insta-sub! And if re-watching Ruyi ever gets too rough and you need to vent to a fellow drama-lover who's watched Zhen Huan & Ruyi several times - hit me up
Thank you! I feel like I missed so much in the Zhenhuan series that I'm rewatching each episode 2 or 3 times, I'm sure I'll still miss some stuff, but I'll certainly be more detailed this time around. Will do! Half of the fun is getting to talk to fellow drama-lovers 😁
I love ur videos n I finished all of them this afternoon haha, I recommend Story of Minglan to you, did u watch this one before? To me, Legend of Zhenhuan n Story of Minglan are the top two C dramas of all time!
In one afternoon! 😂😂 Well thank you haha. I've never seen story of Minglan, but I have heard of it. It's not a harem drama, right? Is it more focused on politics like Nirvana in fire?
@@dramarecaps4217 It's about an official's harem. Minglan, the protagonist is a concubine born daughter. The background is Song dynasty. The plot is awesome, the way it unfolds is a bit slow paced but it's worth it. The characters are well built, too. Anyway, just everything about this show is as perfect as Zhenhuan zhuan. You won't regret it.
The story of Minglan is a great story about women struggles but also family its really centered on a line that’s said multiple times in the story if parents love their children they will plan for their future..
Now that I come back here, I am a tiny bit disappointed by the personality changes in RRLITP. Like, Zhenhuan went from an innocent-girl-turned-scheming-for-justice-woman character to “give me some chances to control my own son and influence him and I’ll THINK about helping you”. I was also confused by the timeline because Longyue/Hengchuo was like…. 12 when Zhenhuan became Empress Dowager but in RRLITP Zhenhuan said she had to marry Hengchuo off and as Noble Consort Xi she couldn’t stop that from happening. So like??? The timeline changed?? Help??? Also where did Jingxi go 😭😭 Ruyi’s change………… ill just call it underdeveloped and leave it at that also WHY WOULD RRLITP!ZHENHUAN NOT WANT TO LIVE IN SHOUKANG PALACE WITH JING AND DUAN?? 😭😭 WHERE ARE THEY I WANT TO SEE THEMMM
I watched Ruyi and now I'm watching Empresses in the Palace. Both shows are great and I even though I know what's going to happen I keep getting amazed by the actors and their performance
Yes, both dramas are just fantastic in their own different ways. What didn't you like about YanXi's palace? Just so I don't recommend something similar..
@@dramarecaps4217 Forgive me, I'm not saying it's a bad drama series but for my personal liking it was hard to watch. I'm really new to chinese drama so I would love to know more recommendations! Since I first watched Ruyi series, the portrayals of the characters there were my first impression and was difficult to get used to a different point of view in Yanxi Palace. I'm aware that Yanxi is more accurate on clothing and also respects historical facts like the appreciation/love emperor had for Fuca Empress. But my problem was the protagonist (Yingluo?). She was really the heroic type, and didn't made sense for me how bold could she be against high rank consorts like Gao and yet didn't receive any kind really serious punishment or her being troubled because she was always backup by someone or she solve it herself. She easily get rid or solve schemes in one or two episodes, while I was used to scheme development in 4-6 episodes, I don't how to explain how that was a problem for me 😅😅😩 I think she was simply portrait as flawless (she was good at almost everything) and her way up to the emperor's favorite position was clear since the beginning. I guess I wanted to see her go through more difficulties or (omg) suffering a bit? I couldn't relate at all, and stopped watching after episode 16😭😭 My bad, Ruyi series really hurt me and I think I ended up liking that kind of really dramatic scenarios. Her pain was my pain and every time a schemes came to light I was shock and worried of how the situation was going to solve... In the other hand I really like Zhen Huan series tho. Huan is such a determined woman and unlike Ruyi she is not so romantic (emperor's brother lmao). She's definitely my favorite character by now, she's clever, knows what she wants, protects her people and fight back, she suffers but has epic comebacks and relies on her allies too😅💖💖 love her so much I hope you can recommend more series soon, thank you💖
@@tsukareta_27 Yanxi's clothing isn't necessarily more accurate than Ruyi's either. Yanxi's hairstyles were more accurate, but other than that overall Ruyi's clothing choices were still more historically accurate. For example, Yanxi had a lot of low-ranking concubines wear deep red (正红) or deep blue (正蓝), two colours that were traditionally reserved for high-ranking concubines or the Empress herself. By contrast in Ruyi all the concubines wore colours that were appropriate for their ranks. Also in Yanxi Palace characters wore clothing at inappropriate timings. In Episode 1 the Emperor wears a full court attire (complete with the red hat and the dragon robe) to attend something as simple as a concubine selection. In real history this would have never happened, court clothing is reserved for (as the name suggests) court only. By contrast Ruyi had all the characters wear appropriate clothing at appropriate times. Another inaccuracy in Yanxi was the use of yunjian (云肩), a clothing that featured very prominently in earlier dynasties but was absent from the Qing Dynasty because it was a Han Chinese piece of clothing, not a Manchu Chinese piece of clothing. By contrast Ruyi featured the accurate white lingjing (白色领巾), a piece of clothing actually used by Manchu Chinese in the Qing Dynasty I really don't know why so many Western fans have the misconception that Yanxi's clothing is more historically accurate than Ruyi's, because in my opinion it's quite clear that Yanxi has way too many clothing inaccuracies, compared to Ruyi which managed to get basically almost everything correct
I definitely see what you're saying. I also found YanXi very campy but for me it depends on my mood. Sometimes I don't want to watch something realistic, I want to see something where I know that no matter what, the lead will triumph, and you can just pretend that good always wins out over evil. But then of course it's hard to get invested or feel anything for the characters, because you just know our good guy is going to win no matter what. No suspense. Unfortunately for you, you started with the cream of the crop lol. If you want more like RuYi/Zhenhuan (more realistic, real stress) I would recommend Scarlet heart. It can be (quite) silly at times, and the premise requires a leap of faith, but the heart of the story is sincere. I definitely really felt for the characters and had a nice time following the scheming. Mayyybe Empress of China? I didn’t really like it but the female lead is definitely flawed, makes mistakes and suffers real consequences. And if you want to branch outside of the harem, I highly recommend Nirvana in fire for all the political scheming/intrigue. Not much romance, but if that’s not a deal-breaker, definitely check it out! I haven’t seen legend of MiYue but it’s highly recommended, and seems good. And definitely avoid princess WeiYoung/the virtuous queen of Han because they are exactly like Yanxi palace in that the main lead is always positive, never turns bad, and yet everything works out for her.
@@lilytay9211 yunjian is actually used in qing dynasty but the Manchus used it for accesories instead of protecting the sleeves of their dress like what the Han chinese invented it for
If you're still curious, here's my comment on the subject from another video: I don’t know about you guys, but since this is supposed to be a continuation of legend of Zhenhuan, I really wanted to figure out who this was supposed to be. I won’t tease you, there’s no one by that name in LOZH. But I wanted to share my two favorite theories that you can kind of make work. Ignore if you didn’t watch Legend Of Zhenhuan and don't want spoilers, or if you just don’t care lol. So, 1 it could be imperial Concubine Li. Zhenhuan made her lose her mind with the ghost scheme, and later she’s sent to the cold palace because she never recovers. The next time we see her, she's lost her mind completely (staring at a broken mirror) but she could have recovered and would definitely harbor resentment against Zhenhuan. 2, is SongZhi (HuaFei's maid turned consort) though we never saw SongZhi make it up to the rank of Imperial concubine, after HuaFei's fall we just never hear from her again. So it is possible that she rose up a bit, lost to Zhenhuan, and now lives here. Just ideas though, like I said there is for sure no reference to an Imperial Concubine Ji in LOZH :(
Imperial concubine Ji never made her appearance in the TV series Legend of ZhenHuan(EITP), but she was a character in the original novel of EITP. Ji conspired with the imperial noble lady Delice (Qi GuiRen), attempted to slander Zhen Huan and Dr. Wen but failed. In the TV series, what Ji did was incorporated in Qi Guiren’s performance.
