The first in a series of my attempts to recreate the feel and production of some of the most legendary drum breaks in history. First up: Barry White’s “I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More" featuring Ed Greene on drums.

With iodine my respect to you, I would like to tell you that it was not really recorded with one hand, rather with both, because at that time, and more in the style of Barry White, the "shuffle" style was used in the hi hats, a drummer tells you, who learned to play with his vinyl!! greetings!

Excellent playing (IMO). Even the great Jeff Porcaro (RIP) said he found those one handed semi quavers tricky. Was it Ed Greene on the record ?

Thank you! Yes, Ed Greene is on that track originally. One of the ultimate masters of the single handed 16th note grooves.

@phillydisco Thanks for info . You can hear those one-handed semi quavers on "Hang on in there Baby" too. As a very average drummer, I always found those hard to nail. Wasn't Mr Greene peed off 'cos Barry White didn't credit the musos on his LP sleeves ?

actually the hi hat was played with both hands, that is to say in the shuffle style. But it is not that it is wrong, if not that it is easier in the way I explained.

I kindly disagree and here’s why: You can clearly hear ghost notes happening on the snare drum that would be impossible to replicate with a 2 handed hi-hat pattern. Listen to the original recording. Not to mention that Ed Greene, the drummer that played the track, was famous for his one handed hi hat feel. Him and James Gadson were THE guys that made that one handed 16th note feel famous. Songs like Loveland, Express Yourself and Use Me are all classic examples. Id be curious if you have anything to back up your claim?

@@BamBam_PDX I also disagree kindly hahaha .. but first I will tell you that I am 60 years old, and I think I am the number one fan of Barry, really, believe me. I have the complete collection of Barry, apart from rare versions. The point is that I have been listening to Barry since the first album he released, and those songs helped me to have enormous independence, because when playing with both hands, which is how it was played at that time (shuffle). and there I answer your question ... is that the hi hat was recorded separately, one of the many innovations of barry when it comes to implementing sounds to his recordings. a greeting and I hope you can practice with both hands, and do not believe more in ghosts .. hahaha !!
