If we were to discuss all the albums that Simon Phillips took part of, we could be busy for the rest of the year. Primarily known for his work with The Who and Toto, he started to play professionally at the age of twelve in his father's dixieland band for four years, and went on to record albums with artists like Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce, Joe Satriani, Michael Schenker, Derek Sherinian, Tears for Fears and many more.
Simon also put together a band called Protocol, which on and off through the years has had multiple iterations, and released albums that are considered landmarks of the jazz fusion genre. He also gives clinics all year round, where he mixes stories of the many collaborations he had be part of with warm up exercises, tips on how to develop your own sound and how to play staples of his repertoire.
Fresh out of a tour in Japan with the new Protocol iteration, Simon took some time to talk to Sonic Perspectives collaborator Rodrigo Altaf for over an hour, and the two discussed his current plans, his work as a producer, and a good part of his recording history. If you want to find out why Simon never joined Judas Priest after playing on their album Sin After Sin, among other stories, check their great chat!

I didn’t hear him talk about priest.. I know that he didn’t join bc he was collaborating jack Bruce at the time, but sin after sin is so iconic and the drums are just amazing. At only 19 years old!!

it's not complicated, Simon was already in a jazz rock mood , Priest was a session booked by the producer Roger Glover , so after that Simon was returning to his more long time projects....

I must precede my comment with my heartfelt thanks and admiration for Simon's work as a drummer. I am partial to his earlier work with Phil Manzanera's 801. I have followed his entire career fro Mike Oldfield, Judas Priest, Pete Townshend, The Who and Toto. Finally I found the opportunity to see him up close in New York City this year. I was very disappointed that the New York dates were cancelled. I had paid for the best seats in the house for the NewYork City show in September. Now if I want to see Protocol I have to find great seats again and hope again the show is not cancelled? I'm not sure I will pay to see Protocol in January after that disappointment. Thank you so much for the interview. I still admire Simon's contributions to every project to date and him continueing to explore progressive music. Alas some opportunities never come to fruition.

When Simon is referring to the sound check incident, he's talking about what happened to fans of The Who in Cincinnati, not Cleveland, on December 3, 1979. Hard to believe it's been 40 years. Even "WKRP in Cincinnati" devoted some time to what happened, and Wikipedia has the basics for those who aren't familiar.

phil collins always ussed the hithat lower as the same level of the snare for the same reason, long line of tomtoms, every knows..., before simon.....

Jaime sorlí Phil Collins never had the hi hat set up as low as his snare because Phil still crossed his hands, left handed drummer ! Simon does set the hi hat and snare almost the same height because he doesn't generally cross hands .

@@philkimber8086 what you try to say..., which isnt possible to play a groove of hit hat-snare cross handed with the hh low like the snare...., which is only possible open handed....., look this just at 8.35, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_12_-jzqOlE.html collins plays in that way from the early 70...., you can see this in every pic of him or of his drumset in google, or in any video in y.t. of him playing...., you really dont know collins.... and still i dont know why i replay you....

Who gives a fuck who did it first. And besides, Phil Collins and Genesis is gay compared to Simon's work. He's more diverse and done way more projects than PC. Who is known for Genesis and a few gay pop songs in the 80,s. However he has one thing he does better than Simon. He sings.

Jaime sorlí hey no need to get grumpy man ! You're partly right but the massive difference is that PC's snare is set up at an extreme angle so that playing cross handed still works. If the snare and hi hat are almost identical in height and angle you simply don't have enough space to produce the stick stroke to effectively hit the snare !

@@freddyferrillo9704 Simon borrowed that from Cobham with mahavishnu . That was in very early 70's . And he played that way With horace silver too in late 60's
