In a Democracy Now! special, the legendary poet, singer, activist Patti Smith joins us for the hour. Her new memoir "M Train" has just been published. In 2010, her best-selling memoir, "Just Kids," won a National Book Award. "Just Kids" examined her relationship with the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who died in 1989. The new memoir focuses in part on Smith’s late husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith, who died five years later. Patti Smith is also celebrating the 40th anniversary of "Horses," her landmark debut album, which has been hailed as one of the top 100 albums of all time by Rolling Stone.

It's wonderful to know there is someone like Patti Smith out there in the world writing and performing

I think it is wrong to pigeonhole her as Punk. She is too courageous to be a punk. There is an abrasive elegance to Patti Smith and her art. Even when abrasive, her work is proper and beautiful. All of us can learn so much from her. I have. She earns our respect for her as a role-model for the Rock Industry, Popular Culture and our efforts fighting for Social, Economic and Political Justice.

+Jules Winfield, in "M Train" Smith makes a brief reference to having a wall-eye.
@Jojoseahorse
@Jojoseahorse 8 лет назад
+Jules Winfield She has had a wandering eye since she was a young child, for which she had to wear an eye patch, but her parents couldn't afford the surgery that would have fixed it. Furthermore, when she was 30 she fell off a stage in Florida and hit her head, causing permanent damage to her vision. That is one reason she was never able to drive. However, I haven't seen her ever let those things or anything else hold her back. She is a strong, beautiful, inspirational woman.

+Jules Winfield I'm sure you didn't mean it in any bad way, just glad to give some info on her, she is my role model :)

Looking at Patti in photographs always intimidated me growing up, so I stayed away from her art. Now seeing her here so gentle and wise I'm going to pick up her books and know her better. Thank you, Democracy Now!

Astounding humility! She says she's not a musician, true enough, yet she's responsible for some of the greatest/best songs in rock history: Because the Night, Frederick, Horses, etc.

She is so incredibly brilliant and talented, but unlike so many famous artists, she has a genuine humility, which I find so endearing.

In March 1976, I read Patti Smith's poetry -- unlike anything I had read, and Wow! I already had an album of hers, and went on, in a trance of inspiration from her poetry to create that summer a free concert series in my city showcasing young jazz musicians, to which thousands came. She was the living personification of "if you feel it, it has dignity. If you can dream it, you can do it." More inspiring people please!

pattys music an art was my safe place in life in the the 70's as a teen.. i also lived outside of detroit. saw her at several differant venues.. got to meet the band at a record store in sterling hts michigan. was great. the store no longer exists. saw her play at the masonic temple, second chance lounge in ann arbor.. an a u of m campus in detroit. i waited to meet her after one shows..and i got to but it was brief.. felt like she had no time for a discussion.. but after all it was after a show.. i was bummed but oh well.. fred played with them as well. but none the less she inspired me.. today i found the whole easter album on you tube an wow that took me back to 17-18 again. im 59 now. i cranked it up an belted out with some songs. funny how you remember words to music you havent listened to for many many years. i still have all her albums an ticket stubs from back then.. patty i still love you and every thing about you. awsome woman.. fan who lives in virginia now..

Fascinating ! Later she wrote The Coral Sea : another tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe. Short enough to be read at a single sitting , the book's prose reads like poetry . Frankly surreal , it charts a young man's voyage across the seas to find The Southern Star . It's a metaphor for the process of dying . In the final lines the soul of Robert is freed from his earthly body by the Hand of God . The writing at the end - and throughout - is worthy of William Blake .

I started reading Just kids because it's the book of the month of the book club I attend to, I don't think I'd have picked this book otherwise but I'm glad this book encountered me by destiny or whatever. I can't put the it down and I'm totally in love with her and Robert Mapplethorpe. She is a genius and her smile is just pure poetry.
