Between having a 4 year old zipping around my house faster than a caffeinated squirrel and a minor head injury that leaves the headset resting crooked on my noggin, this review is like dangling a corndog in front of a starving man.
As someone who has Swordsmen VR as my most played VR game this is going to be awesome. And thank you for uploading a solid review of the game and keeping me up to date with PSVR2 news and release, your videos are the best for PSVR2 users
I loved swordsman VR but unfortunately like the poster said once you get through the awesome physics and swords play it's just a VR arena game, there's no adventure there's no mystery or magic, you chose what enemy or faction you want to fight from a menu then it just plops you down face to face with your foe, there's no seeing your enemy from a distance or planning your next move, that's one thing Arashi castles of sin was cool for you could traverse these levels and see your foe at a distance and decide to use stealth, charge full on with melee or stand back and use ranged attacks. I'm probably going to get legendary tales today, I havnt played a good VR game since Arashi and Arizona sunshine 2, both of which I beat in a matter of days, and as a huge fan of adventure RPGs like skyrim, looking forward to trying this one out
@@mattb9054 You enjoyed Arashi? I heard not great things about it at launch and decided to wait but might have to pick it up. I have only managed to play around 5-10 hours of legendary tales and it is really solid especially for a VR RPG.
What a refreshing review. I really feel VR is like the old days of video gaming. Companies trying things and making games because it’s their passion, not to trick us into buying loot boxes.
Yeah that's why I liked PSVR1. Instead of the same bland PS4 games, there was experimentation. A lot of smaller games felt like they were just starting from scratch like the PS1/N64 era beginning of 3D gaming. I love the graphics in this one. My PSVR2 headset was collecting dust since RE:4 I have not used it at all. Glad to find out about this one.
I've been on the fence about this one since it released, just because it's a hefty price and sometimes games like this can be very tiring on the arms and eyes, with some repetitive-feeling progression. But I've watched this review 3 times over the last few months and I finally decided to get it, and I'm glad I did. Thanks for the detailed review, it really helped me make an informed decision 👍
Picked up day one. Will be a while before i check out due to backlog, but wanted to support this kind of great work from a small developer at full price.
The PC version was half the price till a couple of weeks ago (which I was going to buy) Whilst it might not affect you I personally wont support the game because of this.
I just saw it in the store and was like, i think that is for me. Thanks for always being a reliable and consistent creator. I just knew you would have this here.
Thanks for the review. It looks interesting for the PSVR2 library and I see many are very excited about a dungeon crawler RPG, so that’s great!, although I’m not sure I can justify $60 with my backlog, environments look a little too samey and variety of enemies is quite small. Great it’s native 90, one for the wishlist for now
So, worse than Ancient dungeon 😆 I don't know whether to wait for a sale because the price is quite high. The graphics are average, dark and raw, but I appreciate that it is 90 fps and high resolution. I don't think I'm going to play online.
this looks good, but really i must say, it doesn't look $55 or $60 good , the lack of seated mode might be a problem, lack of enemy variety and the bit of lackluster graphics, this looks like an awesome 10/10 game if it was, let us say , $35 to $40....so i have an idea, wishlisted, will wait a bit, they iron it out, maybe add some quality of life stuff in it and i see a nice %25 discount on it maybe ? not craping on it, but Vertigo 2 for example was $26 and that hit the sweet spot for me, i wouldn't mind paying $10 to $15 more for the more hours, but $55....kinda steep for me, but i am intersted so will see or rather sleep on it tonight and see...
Devs said in the reddit AMA that they're going to provide technical support updates but at this time don't have any plans for new content in the future. Could change depending on sales though.
@@plo617 i am also hearing so many people dropping it after around 10 hours due to boredom and lack of enemy variation, the game starts great but offers nothing new (so i heard) , so yeah, i tell u, if it was $35, would have picked it up, so wishlised and waiting .
Thanks Bryan! Looks interesting. Can you tell me more about the outdoor environments? Is there a day/night cycle? From the footage it kind of looks like everything is at night. I'm just worried that combined with the darkness of the dungeon a constant nighttime outdoors might feel a bit one-note. And is there decent enemy variety? What about variety of landscape? I'm a big exploration guy and I am hoping to see some mountains, valleys, cool buildings and whatnot. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on those things.
The outdoor overworld is cool (although as I said in the review it's not quite as big as it initially seems) but no, there's no day/night cycle and not a ton of variety. It looks good but it's certainly not going to be extreme differences from one end of the map to the other. Even the dungeons all kind of look like caves until you start getting closer to the end of the game. I'm an explorer in games too and I think my satisfaction in LT came from leveling up and being strong enough to progress and see what's around the next corner - and get to the next dungeon of course. Hope that helps! :D
Lol... yes, thanks for saying what I've been thinking. It's neither Dark Souls nor Skyrim. It simply has difficulty, ambiance, multi-player, combat physics and some RPG depth. But let's not get too ahead of ourselves as it doesn't appear to have too much else!@@kart3288
I always find it funny when I’m scrolling through comments and see people asking questions that you’re simultaneously answering very specifically in the video while I’m reading the comments lol. Almost as if people aren’t listening while they’re commenting. 😂
If this had the more interactive environment from blade and sorcery it would be the best vr game ever imo. Love the combat but i miss climbing environments by superheating my sword and stabbing it into solid stone, being able to jump with a button, and enemy bodies despawn a bit fast. But i will say the combat itself feels so much smoother to me than blade and sorcery and the weapon collision feels so much more consistent. Really enjoy the game and plan to get my money's worth
I’ll be picking this one up because it’s the closest thing we’ll have to Skyrim from PSVR1 which was S-tier. Hopes of a PSVR2 port are out of the question. Also, co-op!
@@PalmBeachGaming561nah, check again. It was only released early during PSVR1. It’s great, but very limited by the Move Controllers capabilities. Sadly, Bethesda was purchased by Microsoft before PSVR2 released and there’s no hope of a PSVR2 port.
Indeed, coming out of Steam Early Access usually bumps up the price 5-15 dollars or so. But with Legendary Tales it was legit 2 full years of improvements that changed the game completely, not just a minor update pushing it to v1.0.
In the future, could you add if the game is available physically or not at the end? Im only interested in physical games and have loved this channel for showing me games i never knew came out to add to my collection
Hey there! I've been asked this before but there are 2 problems with it. The first is that almost no PSVR2 games actually have physical releases (even COTM didn't). And the other problem is that most physical releases come way later than the digital version (from Perp Games or Limited Run) which means the review would suddenly be outdated. I wish the news was better but we're gonna see way fewer physical games this generation, especially with the Digital-only PS5 around
I hear you.. Luckly in this case the game is only 7gigs to download you can even download that on a 15 dollar a month phone plan... But i agree that gaming does need physical disc games too because some games are over 200 gigs to download and that would be absolute hell on a phone data plan. I think most VR games are pretty manageable size wise with just phone data plans, but big games are impossible which is why physical discs need to exist for that and because the actual console itself is sold in stores - so a small section of disc games should be required to be sold too right next to the console. The fact that greedy companies try to make games digital only should be a government mandated law against that as it is anti-Consumer trade practices like Meta selling you a VR headset "in stores" but no disc games on the rack next to it forcing you into their online store ONLY. Anti consumer trade practices like this need to be limited now before its to late because "movie theatres", and "games", and most importantly "free over air TV" can all be killed by this type of monopolistic future that WILL come if it isnt limited now. BEFORE its to late. Because that is what the future holds if it is not limited now while its still early enough to put limits on online only content which is anti-consumer if you think about it. Their should always be a way to pick up a disc or order a disc direct from a developer and not be locked into some online store that can impose itself on you but most importantly impose its views on the developers and creaters at will... And THAT is why physical needs to be protected even in the future.. 🎉❤🎉
That's definitely not supposed to happen. Are you playing on Steam or PSVR2? Either way make sure you report the bug to the devs over on their discord.
The Playstation store is showing this as a roomscale only game, is that true and if so then do you actually need that much floorspace to play it ? Thanks.
Awesome review (and gamescast)! This is an easy buy for me. How were the bow and arrow mechanics? Did they feel okay? I played Skyrim VR with a bow and arrow back then on psvr1 and never got bored.
I tried the demo and man I was underwhelmed. The first bit throwing mobs of skeletons at you with sponge-like hp bars was physically draining and not fun at all. Really not sure why they went with this. Combat should be enjoyable, not a chore. I can go hours swiping away at boxes in Beat Saber for example because I'm getting a nice feedback loop and it's fun. Smacking a skeleton for 2hp per hit is extremely monotonous. Hellsweeper by comparison is much more fun.
YES, another big win for PSVR2! Huzzah! Great review! I am so glad single player is just as much fun since im pretty much a lone wolf. This is worth picking up full price -support these devs!!! 🎉
I can't wait to be able to say "Damn this is awesome" in this game. Especially after I bought Bulletstorm VR like a fool and found myself saying "Damn why am I so stupid?" the whole time. I'd give the video a thumbs up, but it's at 666 right now and I will not be the one to ruin that. Edit: ok it's past 666 now so I can like it. lol
Great review Bryan. As a oerson that doesnt get a lot of t8me in VR do you still think this would be worth it for me. Im morw about 30-60 minute sessions at best before i have to help the juniors or they want to play something themselves. Id probably only ever see 5-10% of this game. Still worth it?
That's a tough one. Practically every time I played LT it was for 3+ hours at a time. Not that you couldn't enjoy it in shorter sessions, I just have no idea how satisfying that would be
@@WithoutParole thanks Bryan I appreciate that. I'd love to support the developer for making such an amazing game so I'm thinking of grabbing it and then maybe trying to put aside like 2 hours each Saturday to play.
@@deadringer28i heard it has multiple save char slots, so you should be able to play your char and the kids could play theirs i think.. (BP can this be done?) hope it helps you. :)
@@avaron_VR_Gamecat I'm pretty sure Bryan said that was the case. I didn't mean they'd want to okay this, though they might, I just meant they are gonna drag me out early. Great tip though thanks. I definitely want to see this world and I definitely want to support the developer
It starts outside for the whole tutorial (in the daytime and in the snow) --- but then yeah once you get into the actual game only the overworld is outdoors
As a father of two preschool kids and a full time job, I simply don't have time for RPG games that take forever to get through. And with how many times you said, "overwhelming" and "a ton of pages to read through" and "I had no idea what I was supposed to do", I just can't justify spending $55 on this game. :(
It's not going to be for everyone. But I'm happy I was able to help you recognize that before dropping the cash! Luckily we have plenty of short, easy-to-get-into games on PSVR2... probably too many lol :D
'miniscule amount of lag' Fireball flops to the floor :) This looks like a 6 or 7 if we're talking about normal videogames right? Does the fact that it's in VR really elevate it so high? I know the novelty of VR can really add something to certain games but, it's pretty pricey and doesn't exactly look like say, a Fromsoft game let's be honest :/ Wish there was a demo! Edit: wait, no height adjustment for playing seated?? 😢 How would they miss that one? I can't imagine standing around playing this kind of thing . Please fix that, developer, and get a demo out there please! Not about to gamble with that kind of price even though I do quite want to fight skellingtons
@@WithoutParoleyour reviews just have really good quality. Even conclusion about pluses and cons and 0-10 out of 10 rating alone is made very clear + the review doesn't have robotic voice
Yep. It makes roasting meat at a campfire next to impossible. The only way is to pause the game, rescan your entire playspace to reset the floor position, cook your meat, then repeat the entire process to lower the 'floor' again. Seated mode and a crouch button should be considered an essential requirement in ALL vr games.
Wow great review ! I’m buying this today! I didn’t even realize we were getting this, I haven’t heard anything about it something just posted your review on FB and I seen the 9.7 review and co-op and yeah is the type of game the PSVR 2 needed! Man I’m loving my PSVR2! I don’t even play flat games anymore nothing wows me like VR does! There so many great games and new ones coming out all the damn time! I don’t have the time to complete the games before a new gear one comes out I must buy! Really looking forward to the PSVR2 future!
Game feels repetative and the combat is super clunky, I was bored after only a few minutes, these are the types of games that make me wish Playstation had a refund policy similar to Steam so I can get my $80 back that I spent on this junk
Regarding your crouch comment, I actually like that you have to physically crouch to make it happen in the game. And if you get the Stealth ability, crouching in reality (or sitting on your couch) triggers a Skyrim- style stealth mode!
You made me buy this game for $50 and no way is 9.7. the graphics are basic, it is missing a lot of polish and it become very repetitive really fast. I dont trust you anymore
I didn't make you do anything. This is one of my favorite games on PSVR2 and a lot of people agree that it's fantastic. That said, it's VERY important to find a reviewer you agree with at least *most* of the time. Which makes me wonder - is this the first time you've disgreed with me or the 100th? If you find yourself frequently disagreeing with me you should find a different reviewer who aligns more with your tastes. Good luck with that, I wish you well! :D
The game looks incredible and I was totally sold but not sure now. It blows my mind that there is no seated mode in a game like this. With my back pain, I can hardly play a VR game stood for more than 10 mins without having to sit down. 50 hour game playing stood up???
So how overpriced do you think it is? Sure, $40 might be more reasonable but at least we got EXACTLY what we've been asking for - a deep, full length VR game. So spending a few extra buck to get something amazing is fine by me :D
Awesome review with a great explanations of what the core game is like! I typically need a story to keep me invested after I get used to the gameplay, but I would still like to try it out when it goes on sale. Thanks for the review!
Seems like people love it or hate it. I bet age has something to do with that. This looks old school and maybe a breath of fresh air. I'll be buying tomorrow. $55 is nothing. Drink water instead of energy drinks for a week and there you go.
Really couldnt get into this game, tried a 2 hour trial through ps plus and have only managed to play it twice, 40 mins in total. really repetitive and unsatisfying combat bashing away at enemy health bars is not great in my opinion
