Legendary Wings (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Capcom's 1988 vertically-scrolling shooter for the NES, Legendary Wings.
Legendary Wings straddles the gap between generations of shoot 'em ups from the mid/late 80s, bridging the gap between the older Capcom titles (1942, Section Z) and the newer, higher octane ones on more capable hardware (UN Squadron, Forgotten Worlds). And even though the NES was limited compared to the arcade hardware that those all ran on, the clearly more "modern" design of Legendary Wings helps the NES title feel substantially more refined than the ports of the older arcade titles.
Like most 80s Capcom games, the premise behind this one is a bit strange. At first glance it appears to take place in the distant past. - until you start running into robotic flying enemies, that is. It actually takes place in the distant future, where a computer that has played God to mankind since the dawn of time has apparently grown tired of helping the human race advance itself. The computer decides that the time has come to wipe humanity out, and so you play as a warrior, a guy that receives the power of flight from the gods, who is tasked with saving the world from the computer's intentions. And for whatever reason, your character wears what appear to be pink ass-less chaps. I know, I don't get it either.
There are five stages total, and each has four sub-areas: you always begin above ground flying over ancient monuments and whatnot, and end each stage in an underground tunnel sequence that culminates in a spaceship filled with brains and eyeballs. Each stage has a "penalty" area (where you go if you get caught in the breath of the giant face in the ground) and a "bonus" area (revealed by destroying a ground weapon hiding the entrance). While neither of these areas are required, the bonus area provides a lot of convenient weapon power-ups and point bonuses, helpful in winning extra lives.
The gameplay is pretty standard but it feels fast and smooth. You can upgrade your fire-power multiple times: in addition to improving power and coverage of your weapons, each upgrade allows you to absorb an additional hit before you die.
The game is surprisingly short, but many people will probably appreciate the difficulty level here. It's not stupidly easy, but it's not excessively difficult either. Even if shmups aren't your bread and butter genre, this is a game that most people can probably conquer with a bit of practice, and with far less frustration than with games like Gradius, Starship Hector, or Gun-Nac.
Legendary Wings isn't what I'd call legendary, but it is a good game with appealing graphics, great music, solid controls, and a reasonable challenge. If you're daunted by the more hardcore shooters and find yourself looking for one that's a bit more accessible to masses, this is a great pick. It's fun, no matter your skill level.

I LOVED this one. Remember renting it and just loving it, then trading my copy of Double Dragon to a friend for it. Maybe not the best trade ever, but I got that Double Dragon back some years later when you could get NES games for a buck at flea markets. Weird the little things you remember.

This Capcom shoot 'em up is definitely off-beat, mixing ancient landscapes with robots and spaceships filled with brains and eyeballs, but the classic Capcom presentation and the reasonable difficulty level put it a solid step above most of the NES's early shooters.

Absolutely love this game when I was a kid, and was by far the most difficult game I ever past. This dude here is the only one I have found on RU-vid who actually knows where the lucky room can be found in stage 4. I just wish he understood that you can shoot out the eyes, when you fight the devils stand-up Beach Palace, making it impossible for the thing to shoot eyeballs at you. Otherwise, he's a hell of a good player what kept me going, when I would play this at a kid, wasn't just the challenging gameplay, it was the awesome music. I especially love the music and stages 3 and 5. It was a great game but never got the respected it rightly deserves.

Anyone notice how the palaces from 1 to 5 slowly progress from natural looking (1) to completely overrun and taken over by technology (5)? Nice storytelling I didn’t realize until now.

I was in first grade with this came out and remember renting it a lot and never really liking it or getting very far at all, but it's significant to me for two reasons. First, those faces, especially the one that can suck you in, frightened me in a way that made it kind of a thrill whenever they'd show up, which was probably an early encounter with conflicting emotions. And second, because it was the first time I can remember in which I noticed the name of the company what made the game. At some point, Capcom started releasing their games in uniform boxes and when I realized they all came from the same place, and that Legendary Wings was actually one of theirs, I rented it again to see if that knowledge would change my feelings towards it. Between that and my growing skill, I ended up liking it a bit more. Instantly I noticed it "sounds like Willow" and "he runs like Bionic Commando". Life was cool when you were just figuring it out.

OMG I finally found a video about this game... I loved this game... but I couldn't remember the name of the game. I thought it all started with Angel for over 30 years and now I realize why I thought that. I forgot the character is an angel lol. WOW... This was my favorite game and Abadox. I'm 40 years old right now, good memories ♥

I bought this game at a garage sale for a buck many years ago and since I collect more games than I play I still haven't played this game, it's one of the handful of NES games that I have never played. This video popped up in my feed so here I am and now I think it's time for me to play the game. It's exciting cuz even though it's a old game it's a new game for me. Like Al Bundy always says, "LET'S ROCK"

This was a very fun game, challenging also. At the beginning for the most part, one bad move and *wash wash wash* (sounds like, when you are shot 😁) The music sounds like Megaman meets Stryder... understadable since both are also from Capcom...
